Coil shocks had already proven themselves in the 90's. I'm still regularly riding an OG Z1 Bomber and RS Super Deluxe and absolutely love it. It's taken air cans decades to catch up, much like it's taken decades for digital cameras to be comparable to a good film camera, or flat panel display technology to produce the same colours as our old school CRTs.... we got it right the first time.

Thanks Mate, I have been watching videos on setup of coil for 3 weeks and finally have a great understanding of how to setup a coil. I am new to the coil and the bike company asked my rider with gear weight and said they were going setup the suspension. I have now ordered new heavier coils for both my Ohlins and my Rock Shox coils as I didn't feel that the bike was as good as it could be even with adjustments. I took it back to zero checked your video twice first I got a great understanding of the setup and the second time was to take notes and to pile drive it into my memory. I had watched other videos but the setup never felt right until using your method with details you include that others have left out

I pre load 1 turn on Ohlins , no rattles and small bump compliance is very good bacause the more preload you have the higher the force required before the shock begins to move. highly recommend the vorsprung videos for explanations . Loctite purple is good for stopping a coil adjuster in place without going too mental , its almost a gel level anti vibration substance so not a biggy to undo by hand.
@th_js
@th_js 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. As little preload as possible, without the spring rattling loose. Some shocks have an adjuster with a bolt to lock it into place, which I think all shocks should have.
@th_js
@th_js 2 жыл бұрын
But on the other hand, despite what some people say, you CAN use preload to adjust spring-rate, thus adjusting the force required to bottom out as well. It will obviously increase the force that it requires to move the suspension in the beginning of travel, if you have a excessive amounts of preload, but in an emergency, preload can be your friend, even though it's never ideal.

@ostankovalex1176

they don't have spare spacers, but generally 230x57.5-65mm is the same shock with the different travel reducer. I'm using my 3D printer to get a new spacer to convert my 57.5 to 62.5 If you get a 230x60, you can convert it to 62.5 stroke, but the new spacer is required and you need to re-assemble the whole shock (special tool is required). And you need to make a spacer with the required stroke

@@th_js well it depends if you really need it. I have massive benefits for steeper terrain. The fork is that much higher by just pointing down and got way less dive all around. I don't even have a firm spring. Its a step down for what is recommended. The hydraulic progression dial is so strong that you essentially have the same thing you get from the Sprindex. Because I have only coils now, I can throw the pump out.

Regardless if it is air or coil spring it all goes down to damper. Hydraulic damper are the key on suspension which is the issue with suspension fork before, it is now being realized that coil creates natural bounce added with dampening. We will see dirtbike suspension fork on MTB and air will soon again obsolete. Reliability and less frequent maintenance as ebike are emerging now as next choice

I am lazy so I use just some reusable STRONK zip ties to zip the rear wheel or seat stays just to the seat tube. THIS actually helps massive because without my shock the rear end goes down and my rocker upwards. If I want to install my shock the rocker is to high to take a shock and also the spacers on the trunnion need to held in place with grease on the inside of the rocker. Its almost impossible even without the weight of the rear wheel. So I will do this forever, just use zip ties to make it perfect for alignment.

Thanks Doddy. Interesting to see how different spring rates are per bike. I’m 205lbs/93.5kg and have a 600lbs Rockshox spring on my Specialized Enduro 2020. I don’t see how I could ever go down to 500lbs. Is that progressivity of frame design or shock stroke or travel that is influencing that?
@ostankovalex1176
@ostankovalex1176 2 жыл бұрын
that's generally leverage to start with. how much your shock compresses per mm of your rear wheel travel. For example, 30mm stroke shock with 160mm will compress much easier than 60mm stroke shock with the same travel Indeed, the progression of the frame affects it a lot, but mainly when going deeper in the travel. My suggestion - get the sag you want to start with. Once you get for example 25-30% sag, you need to figure out whether you need bottom out resistance or not (not all of us get decent jumps and drops). I've got RS Super Deluxe coil on my remedy, it's a pretty average frame in terms of progression, but I've figured out my riding was harsh with 600lbs RS spring and not enough sag; however, I nearly bottomed out my shock, so I bough an MRP progressive 550 lbs spring and that solved it for me. I also weight aroung 94-95kg. My current sag is about 30% and I rarely bottom out at all. And even if I do, I can't feel it - it's so soft.

I run a 500lbs spring on a canyon sender with 2 preload and get 28% for 230lbs rider weight. I run it firm for drops and jumps at bike parks and occasionally bottom out. I tried 550lbs and it was horrible 😂

@@jankulozic401 my bike transformt from a harsh ride to a cushion with that. but I bought a more advanced shock then this RS one. You sure should have a more progressive frame to work with a shock like it was mentioned in the video but and that is the case with Sprindex coils, they are progressive it self. Last 20% of the stroke will be progessive and you also can actually vary your spring rate with a simple turn on the Sprindex ring. So you have a simpler solution in the end because you dont need a pump anymore and you need less service for a coil shock then air shocks.

Doddy, do you recommend spherical bearings versus standard bushings on a coil shock? I heard spherical bearings can help isolate frame flex from the shock eyelets and supposedly extend the shock life as well as reduce friction. Is it worth swapping out the standard bushings?
@Metal-Possum
@Metal-Possum 2 жыл бұрын
I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume a spherical bearing won't give you the same service life as a standard bushing will. You'll get dirt ingress for starters, as well as applying pressure over a smaller surface area. I run standard bushings on a single pivot bike with no linkages, and they're still as good as ever after 20+ years of abuse.

For most it’s a sidegrade 😂 they perform amazingly when set up properly but can take some trial and error which some people don’t have the patience for and like doddy said sometimes they only get you in the ball park of where you want to be… the fine tuning involves trial and error and sometimes if you calc wrong for the spring weight or like different setups for different terrain/riding styles it means more money for buying different springs. Air is the way to fly for people who are casual or just a bit more serious than casual with riding their bike as air springs allow more precise setup up, cheaper and it’s infinite how many times you wanna change your air pressure and it’s free once you buy a shock pump…
