As usual great video and it's always nice to see other builders' methods My first few months in the trade i got the job of fitting spindles, with no idea how to do it. The way i've always worked out spacing for spindles is overall length divide 100mm (spacing) and 40mm or 30mm (spindle). So 3164mm divide 130mm = 24.3 spindles ( so 25 ) 25(spindles) x 30mm(thickness) = 750mm 3164mm -750mm = 2415mm 2145mm / 26 spaces = 92.8mm spacers Stop block on the chopsaw and measuring every now and again to check the spacing is correct, with 92.8mm + 30mm = 122.8mm, then just the 122.8mm times table on the calculator lol

I did my own staircase renewal in my old house in 2005. The house was over 180 years old and needed the stairs sorting. I think I did a great job but I wasn't professional like Dan here. I made a few errors but it was good at the end and is still there with the new owners. Great video Roger!

Mr Findlay has been master haggis maker a number of times and has been a Rick Stein UK food hero. Well worth a visit and bring you back some of the good stuff! The other thing to get from any self respecting Scottish butcher is Stornaway black pudding. It is the single best black pud ever - unlike anything you’ve ever tasted!!

My dad was a woodworking machinist, retiring in 1975, so old school. He could turn his hand to most things carpentry & joinery. He fitted new sticks/ spindles to our balustrade, raking & horizontal. He turned the spindles & made spacers (imperial units) from PSE softwood. I don't recall how he measured it all out but I can't fault it, even today.

this is exactly what these kind of videos needs to be. clear and to the point with no BS. and a little bit of trick shots as well. i really like that dan showed what is really done on jobs like this. work it out as best you can and then cheat the last bit to make it look right. you can in theory get it perfect but that never happens . thats where the real skill is

I love how he's so calm about the spindle gaps on the slope. I calculate it and calculate and cut a test piece, and check from bottom to top, and all the time I'm thinking "sh*t sh*t sh*t" until the whole thing is done. And he is just so chill

I’ve only done this once, so I can appreciate the exemplary skill Dan demonstrated. (Also, I cheated a bit by using loose tenons and epoxy to enable an easier install.)

I always notch the top out of my handrail tenon 5mm or so. That way the handrail lifts up and covers up the top of the mortise. Looks more seamless then. Great video though and love the work you guys do.

Hi Michael To be honest with you I have always struggled with maths at anything more than the basic level. My maths teacher told me to give up on my 'O' level which was probably the right advice. I have learned what I need to know for calculating the size of hot water cylinders and boilers etc but my grasp of algebra and calculus is slender. I still have no idea what value there is in knowing a prime number

I use same clamps when I pull posts together, to make sure I don't get one pinging off in my face I have drilled holes in them and screw them to the newel tops. :)

Very nice. Have done many sets of stairs just like those. But the hardest one I did was a set from the basement up to a second story gallery rail and every iron spindle had to be mortised into the floor and the top rail. It was made easier by the portable angle drill press attachment for my cordless drill, but still had to square up a couple hundred holes with my mortise chisel. Took me a couple of days to get it done by myself.

All bang on proper tradesman but something we do different now is to mark around the profile of the moulded handrail on the newel and rout the full profile out to about 10 mil each end with a palm router oversize the handrail by 20 mil then spring it in all pva,ed up we find it’s quicker and just as strong (if u think about it it’s actually stronger against sideways force cos uve got the full thickness of the handrail mortised in to the newl ) it’s not traditional but in this game nowadays a hell of a lot ain’t anymore but it works for us and it’s definitely quicker

Tony James is on his job which is a long way from Daniel's job. They meet up every so often to work on the same job but most of the time Dan is on the bigger sites. Oh and a tip for anyone doing stair spindles/balustrades. Divide the total length of your run/distance by 120. That will give you a rough estimate of how many spindles/balustrades/sticks(🙄) you need

I'm not dan but I can answer for him it's because the bottom spacers are soft wood and the pin holes will be filled and then painted were as the top spacers are of same material as the handrail probably oak and he doesn't want pin holes showing as the handrail will more than likely just have a clear sealer or oiled etc.but to be honest most chippies will still pin them as we don't usually have that amount of clamps at hand so will just be filled with an oak coloured wax or filler.

I've always put a 5mm shoulder on the top of the tenon to hide the top mortise line. Did you rely purely on the glue as draw-boring is difficult on such short tenons ?

No I did put a screw in. The tenons were tight enough but more to locate it in the right position.

Just measuer the total gap/distance and divide by the number of sticks and you get the center spacing for every one and no nee to know the width of them. Or you can lay them all side to side and meadure the total widt of all sticks together and divide by the number of sticks then you get the exact average of all of them 😉😁

It’s not to bad. Cheap gas is the biggest problem and it could do with a clean.. my Makita 1st fix isn’t so good.

Could you not lay out the sticks side by side, mark the face side and measure across them to get the total thickness. Then take that distance off the total span and divide the remainder by the amount of spaces you need. That would give you the exact spacer length regardless of any difference in the thickness of the sticks?

Conor that was exactly what Dan showed as the alternative method to measuring them. The callipers were really just to show the variation is not insignificant.
