Nice Work! I fit a pre-made arched staircase about 16-17 years ago. As a carpenter, it was a challenge and a lot of fun to do. The pre-made nature of it shaved about 2-3 weeks off the project. After mounting it, we added the trim, handrails and enclosed the underside of it.

This is all great....Until you're on site, and some other 'joiner' has put the floors in, and the rise is inch an half out.......and the walls are out of square........and some apprentice bench joiner in a mass produce factory hasn't bothered to dry test the staircase.......and you're on a sh!t price !! 😂😂

Spot on my friend , but you forgot every man and his dog wanting to get upstairs and down again laughing at you as you are on a price and everyone else seems to be on an astonishing day work rate , ‘o’ and at the end of the day you have unbelievably priced power tools all over the place , you are Fu*cked and depressed, your vehicle is miles away and if you are allowed to bring your vehicle close there is every chance you will make sh* t of it on the bomb site out the front of “ your plot “ and then the nightmare journey home and if you are fortunate you can do some other sh*t the next day 👍, keep up the good work buddies as we are all in this together.

@dermotkelly6946 yep, everyone wants to be up the staircase you're fitting all of a sudden. I'm out of that rat race. I live In Spain now. No more trudging 500 yards across muddy sites with arms full of tool boxes. Although the old houses are more solid, the Spanish really don't care about level or square 🤣🤣

I’m no expert on stairs but I’ve fitted a few now. They get easier the more you do. I bought my last one from Stairbox and they did a great job. Everything was made to just slot together. They’d even cut the angles on the spindles, I just had to cut the spacers.

Minimum width used to be 900mm I believe and there was a minimum tread width and max riser but I forget now. Also max angle of about 45° which can differ for loft conversions? Been a very long time since I fitted a staircase. Nice job 👍

I have a third option... im starting to install all fitted bespoke furniture... but lucky for me i have some contacts who also do stairs and metal stairs etc.. those people will come when i find them a job fit it and i get paid a commission!

dowle is far better than a screw. screws have no sheer strenth. Japanese have been using dowles and pegs time began, and still are

Fred - agreed. I asked a neighbour who is a joiner if he had any nails. Nails he says, no one uses those these days. Well said I, I've never seen anyone using wood screws on roof timbers and who's buying all these nail guns?

As a joiner I use nail guns on roof construction but there are construction grade screws with shear strength on the market, each to their own I suppose!

Hi Dan, and hope you had a great birthday. At 15.25 on the video when you're talking about the softwood nosing is it this you rip down, it looked like you had already fixed this by then with the Paslode? What kind of laser was that you were using for the spindles ?

U need a good decorator following u up there dan he could so easily ruin all that fabulous oak work if he’s not neat and tight with his brushwork seems the regs have changed aswell from my college days back then it used to b 16 treads max to a flight before a landing mind u I am a bit older than 50 mate so no surprise they’ve changed and at my age I’m glad they have

I like Dan's work, good chippy but as a Carpenter and Joiner I don't like the way Dan slapped loads of PVA Glue under the Oak Landing Tongue and Grooved floor boards. He didn't allow for any movement/shrinkage when the central heating reduces the moisture content in the boards. Usual process is to screw and pellet the boards but no glue, this allows the boards to shrink. Glueing them will often result in the floor boards splitting when they shrink back.Never ever glue the tongues and grooves of boards.

Hi Adrian thanks. Good point about gluing them down. I was advised to do this , and on a slightly different situation some hardwood floors are glued down. Time will tell..

I did my apprenticeship in the mid 80's and in the mid 90's concentrated on the Joinery side and run my own business for 25yrs now. Doing your job is harder on the body than mine so you have my utmost respect. When we make doors (internal and external) we never glue panels in the grooves or the tongue and grooved boards together because they will shrink (internal doors) and expand and contract in external doors so we alow the panels,boards to "float". When I fit stair-cases and fit T&G flooring on the landings I never glue them down , I tend to either screw and pellet or secret nail them down but allow for movement. Some Hardwood floors as you say are glued down but the moisture content must be very dry and even then central heating can effect them.They also tend to use adhesives which are flexible. Having handrails at 1100 for public stairs makes no sense, because nobody will be able to use them. It would still be 900. I think you may be confusing handrails and barriers.

I’m sure handrails are 1100 when horizontal, but I think you are probably correct about the handrails going up the stairs. It’s been a long time since I’ve fitted any in flats where regs change. Thanks for pointing it out.

Each to his own but drawer boring has worked for centuries on timber framing and staircases. Fitting screws is cheaper, thats it, only reason to use them. Add to that MDF Risers and or treads again is budget, it's cheap so the budget is determing materials and construction. The argument of the drawer bore pushing/splitting the waste side of the tenone is nonsense. If the bottom of the mortice is 3mm further than the end of the tenon so what?."A 16th closer to the face brings the tenone into place" as the old saying goes. Point beiong a 16th of an inch is enough to close the joint but not too much as to break the tenon.

Why do you fit from the top down? As there is no tolerance with the top Nosing...... Is it to scribe the first riser to an unlevel floor or some other reason?

If you start at the bottom on some stair cases it makes it very difficult to get the top newel post in. As this one had a mid landing I fitted the top flight, then made sure the bottom flight was in line with it.
