How to fix 2003 Dodge Cummins P0483 P2509 won't start . The fan clutch is the problem. It will often times start if you unplug the fan clutch plug located on the passenger side of the bottom of the radiator. Once the fan clutch gets bad enough it causes the Engine Control Module to not power up. This causes the no start condition as well as a Diagnostic Link Connector to not communicate. Cycling the key three times will still give you codes on the odometer though.

Thank you for this video! After spending all day randomly looking at diagnostic videos to figure out what could be causing our cummins to crank, not start, have no fuel pump priming, and a diagnostic tool to not connect, I stumbled upon your video and realized that the fan clutch we just put in (along with a new alternator) could be our culprit.. Sure enough we unplugged the new fan clutch and the truck fired right up and the diagnostic tool connects to the ECM! Everything else seemed to point into the direction of the ECM being faulty.. so glad we didn't have to replace it! Never would've thought that the fan clutch having faulty electronics would totally disable our rig..

@SWAMPBUSTERS1 Right. P0700 means computer wiring is chopped or disconnected. P0483 is the fan clutch non communication. I'd check for blown fuses and get fixing the wiring you are aware of.

Enjoy your watching your programs I like how you explain things , I do have a question about my 2003 Dodge cummins 5.9 it has around 150k and It getting long starts, It just started doing this about 2 months ago , I first thought it the winter and diesel's are cold natured anyway. But we have had a few weeks of warm weather 50's and 60's even has been is the low 70's and the truck still takes awhile to start. could this be because of the fuel injector? I see a lot of diesel fuel injector cleaner on the market, That you add to a tank of fuel and burn it as you go. Have you used any of these and are they worth wasting time and money on? I know you cant diagnose my problem without looking at the truck, I was just wanted to pick your brain about my thought process. I'm going to replace air filter and fuel filter just as a first step Not sure how often fuel injectors need to be cleaned and if the fuel cleaner that you add to the tank works or not. I have watched a few videos on line about removing the fuel injectors for a hands on cleaning it looks very straight forward . If decide to do this task I will only remove one at a time for servicing that way if I destroy one I have only one to purchase . BTW I have only one error code on the truck that is P0633 which is about the Key immobilizer which the local dodge dealer said at one point the truck was started and the computer got a bad reading from the chip in the key . I know way this is happening a few years ago someone tried to steal my truck which the immobilizer did its job and didn't start for theses guys. but ever since that event I now can start my truck and while the truck is running remove the key and lock the doors this is great for winter warm ups. So the p0633 code is from my winter warm up runs . I was also thinking I need to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Sorry for being so long can you think of anything else I need to check? BTW I do not plug in my truck when its cold we rarely get below 20 degrees. Any thoughts you have would be great Really enjoy your channel you have shown me things that have made working on my cars and trucks easier and save me money. THANK YOU ! the comment about how to get the code was VERY helpful. TY! Was glad to know the truck need not be running to know if the clutch fan is gone or not. I have never done this job before, and made the fool mistake of not first watching a number of videos on how to do it before I foolishly started removing the fan bolts and the pulley bolts, making it impossible to remove either, and making for myself a FUUNNNN time trying to replace them UGHGHHH! Just kick me, Self!

@Jolinator The way the computer powers up... you can some times unplug it, plug it back in and then get where you need to be. It won't wipe it out while running, it'll just not re start. This one was hosed with no re start.

@evildesl It takes a TON of fuel pressure to start those initially. You have one or more bad injectors that's leaking disallowing enough pressure to start.

@Hermanvogel I'm like you- I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE the chisel idea when I was taught it seven years ago. I didn't like the marring to the nut or the hammer concept. Having used it for seven years I find it doesn't adversely affect operation or longevity of the pump or fan clutch. AND no one cares what the fan clutch nut looks like and it's ready to go the next time.

@moofushu Yours is a more common and better design. It's based on temperature like an engine thermostat is. You have a spring that is made from two different kinds of metal that react to heat. Yours is a "fan clutch" because it has a clutch that engages and disengages. Google a video on thermostat boil demonstration. It will make more sense.

@djweszone BS? Beautiful Success.... it works fast without spending on specialty tools that clutter your toolbox and rarely get used. The bite marks made me a critic at first, but some won't come off even with the air hammer. That's when I tried this out of desperation and it came right off. That was 6 years ago. Now I go straight to this method. The air hammer and kit I have/used was a Cornwell at 150 psi.

@zrultima Ok, today I have time to answer. This electric fan clutch is controlled by the computer instead of a two layer metal spring that reacts to temperature. IT has a lot of current draw compared to other components. (too much in my opinion) When it fails it can throw the computer into fail safe mode or create other kinds of glitchy havoc. Another possibility is that one of your eyelets that goes to the + - cable ends got swapped in polarity and did the same thing a shorted fan would.

Computer controlled injection. When you push start it, it thinks it's already running. When you key start it, the computer refuses to add fuel till certain conditions are met ie. a certain pressure level. It's to protect the truck. Diesel isn't just a fuel. It's also a lubricating oil too.

Then it went back to no start. the only way to start is with a wiff of starting fluid on the air filter and it will fire everytime. once its been running for awhile it will start up no problem. but let it cool more than 2 hours and your quick starting again. Could it have something to do with the fan? i dont here it

But my truck has other ideas...Replaced the fan, started the truck, it ran but very rough, idled for about ten minutes as I checked to make sure I had no loose wires. Shut off the truck, left it for twenty minutes to let my wife know the good news, started it again, this time ran smooth as a Cummins should and always has, tested the trailer hookup plug (rewired a while back and wanted to use this weekend) everything tested great shut off the truck went inside to change clothes to pick up that wife for lunch, back out to the truck, will turn over and will not start again, back to a P0483 code, help if you can. Easy question I hope is I have a P0483 code should I still get the lift pump hum waiting for the pigtail to go out?

I bought at auction with plow damn good deal 1350.00 with 150k on motor. haha stole it.... but it threw codes 0483 0480 0720 0500 2509 ect.. I might have screwed some codes up.. also limp mode. I replaced rear speed sensor and output speed sensor. also realizing fan clutch was from ford.. mechanical .. I guess guys are swapping them out to avoid wire slashing. but I changed it all back codes are gone. also replace all grounds I could and battery terminals. what's your take on them changing to mechanical fan clutches. I would think electric better? any how I cut and extend all wires away from blades /rerouted an shielded. my speed sensor didnt go out yet any suggestions. I'm gonna pull rear again an make sure nothing stick in to it an change fluid. thanks for all your info & sorry so long.

Take your injectors in for testing or replace them. One or more are shot.

The starter can't turn it over fast enough, to build enough fuel pressure. Pushing it or using starter fluid get it turning faster than the starter can. Turning faster the fuel pump can make enough pressure to over come the leaking injector.

My 2003 dodge ram 3500 dually 5.9 L start correctely until temperature is + 35Celsius to -26 Celsius below zero. At -27 it is a gess. At -28Celsius below zero is start well and run for 50 secondes and stop. Turn off the switch and arfer 2 secondes restart correctely and it will run 50 secondes and stop again. I can do this until my batteries are able to restart my engine but it never run more than 50 secondes. I wait to the temperature go to -26Celsius and it will start and run like a new truck. If I let my truck in my garage and go outside at --28 or colder (-30, -40, -45Celsius) it will run perfectely. If I stopped my engine 3 hours. never start until the temperature is going to -26 Celsius or hotter... we change ; batteries, lift pump, TPS, fan clutch, keys, fuel, fuel filter, oil oil filter, air filter, fuel cap,Master bloc fused under the hood. kleen injectors, put fuel conditionnor in fuel, nothing change..... what the hell is the problem

so my 2003 3500 same thing I've put three fan clutch in and the same problem. it catches the fan and tears the wires off. no code comes up and truck runs fine! I want to switch it over to a 2001 style with no wires!!! called around and what I found is that the fan is different so therefore shroud and pulley would be as well any suggestions?

Justin Flowers I'd check the motor mounts and body mounts first. It's likely got a lot of movement there.

Justin Flowers Steve in the comments below had a similar problem and it was the bearings in the fan itself.

I just bought an 03 Cummins and kid said he got off work and wouldn’t start so he towed it home I then bought it months later cause they couldn’t figure it out, I first noticed collapsed upper radiator hose but thought it was cap or thermostat after not being able to connect to obd2 port I then went after ECM and a used one was installed with no luck I put original ECM back on and I’ll be damn if I finally got obd2 connection and only code was fan clutch! That was it! The fan clutch had ECM all messed up and crank but no start! Weird but ok!

Hey Brian, Ive been having trouble for a while now. I have P0480, P0483, P2509, P0513 codes showing. Truck runs fine except the fan clutch does not ramp up, even when grounding pin 1. Ive done all the diagnostic testing for the P0480 and the fan clutch tests good when testing resistance. The test that failed is Fan driver circuit shorted to ground in ECU, Step 6 of the troubleshooting procedure in the Factory Service Manual. I have a new fan clutch in the garage and a new ECU on the way. Did you observe the P2509 code go away if you start with fan clutch unplugged. I just don't want to replace a good part if only one is bad. The FSM calls for more than 100,000 ohms between fan connector pin 1 and battery negative. My truck has 94,000 ohms... still seems like a lot of resistance, just don't know how sensitive it is to that short circuit if you want to call it that.

I have the exact problem and followed the procedure on the P0480 and P0483. The connector was damaged but once I replaced it, all the signals are there (they weren't there before : Fan speed, voltage, etc..) but the ecm doesn't ground the clutch. Ecm is not the problem because when I go to active test and turn the Fan Control on, the signal is pulsed to ground. Any sugestions? By the way the clutch is "new"(Doorman)

George Navarro mine ended up being the ECM, replaced it with a refurbished unit from Dodge. I started getting more codes and I ran the troubleshooting steps from the FSM, all pointed to a bad internal ground in the ECM.
