For my car, the two buttons on the inside and the fob would not open the rear trunk. However The key would open the trunk which thankfully helped with the repair of this. The wiring harness was the issue as you see in this video, but I only had one severed wire, and that was gray. Once I reconnected that I was able to operate the trunk normally. This diagnosis was perfect for my E60 however, it took longer for me because the wire that was broken (Gray) was very close to the trunk hinge and made it difficult to work with, and I had to be very cautious because I didn’t have much wired to play with for splicing or soldering. I had other wires where the insulation was cut, but the copper wire itself was intact. I hot glued around those and used electrical tape to excess in order to minimize bending for future opening and closings of the trunk. Keeping my fingers crossed my effort works for a good while.

Seems like a common issue. I have a similar issue but only my trunk button doesn’t work. I’ll check that yellow wire. Do you know where it get caught up on? And thanks for the video! I just got my e60 for free not running and almost have it tip top.

Haha lucky you! And no worries at all. Most likely a very common issue. It gets bent with pressure way too many times in its life which is why it brakes. Mine was the truck only in the beginning and in a matter of time I had it lost from inside button as well as the key fob button. So it’s gonna be doing that to you too. Just open it up and watch you’ll be surprised just how I was. I’m glad it helped you! Enjoy.

This was exactly the culprit to my 2008 bmw 528i… 2 wires broken and a bunch about ready to break. Does negative battery terminal need to be disconnected, prior to soldering? Also, after trunk was fixed, check engine light turned on, runs rough with misfire codes… would the wires have something to do with the ECU/ECM? Thank you 🙏

How did you open it when you crawled into the trunk. Is there something that opens from in the trunk??

I had similar problem with broken wires exactly where you showed it. Mine is a 2008 BMW 535i. The wires were patched 5 years ago, the lid is just starting to not work again. I am afraid I have to do that trouble shooting and patching up of broken wire again, or the handle-latch needs to be replace.

Most likely it’s not gonna be the latch and just be the wires. Good luck!

@@smartguy687 You're absolutely right. A couple of small wires were cracked and broken. I had the same thing repaired at the shop 5 years ago, but these wires are fragile, the root cause is the design by BMW. Anyway, I reattached the wires (2 of them) and tried my best to connect and tap them. Hope they would last for a few more years. One thing I'm doing differently and to manually help to soften the opening and closing of the truck. The springs are so strong, so I try to hold onto the lid as it goes up or down. Hope this will help others who may have the same issue.

Open your arm rest for the rear passenger and you''ll see a small plastic trunk open that and you'll have a wire at the end of the trunk release that and the trunk will open.

Anel Trex no I soldered the wires and put a heat shrink tube. But if you can’t do that you can just use electrical tape np.

hey, i have a similar issuie on a F20 2015 BMW the thing is that the electician guy didnt find any bad wires and also amother strange thing is that the trunk is opening from the diagnostic tool computer only.... it makes no sense.. any ideas?
