I’ve done this repair. It works. What I do is drill a whole, tap it, place the plug and then grind it flat. I then drill the next hole about half a plug diameter away. Tap, plug and grind it flat. The next hole is drilled between these two. When the hole is tapped and plugged, the plug cuts into the two previous plugs locking and sealing them. Effect is exactly the same as what you are doing, but makes drilling, tapping and overlapping a little easier. I enjoyed the video!

I was wondering how you were going to lock in the last plug. Once I saw you set the last plug before, I realized the last plug you installed would lock everything together. Elegant solution!

I find this to be a very effective and elegant way to repair cracks in cast iron. I know there are may advocates for brazing or tig welding over this, but if done correctly, which is fairly straightforward and easy, I believe this provides for a more permanent repair with deeper crack penetration than a weld or braze which have much more potential for introducing heat induced stress and distortion.

Thanks for showing. I saw similar works several weeks ago on a "Pakistani Repair"-Channel - they do it more or less like showed in this crash-lesson - of course with instruments approx. 40+ ys old. But with the same positive result. A topic for real repair guys - nothing for modernistic "no-challenge part-changers" 😉

I have a crack in my cylinder head seated right under the gasket, end to end, should I try tig welding it because it’s too close to an end, or is plugging still possible? I assume grinding it down will be very difficult as the gasket needs to sit directly where the weld will be

@MrDanielSoliz
@MrDanielSoliz 3 жыл бұрын
If you can’t hear it run be careful. Famous last words( it ran when I parked it) not running $200-$500 depends on if you can turn it. Running price goes up from there. Normally we get more cracked block then not cracked and they all say the same thing “ it ran when I parked it”

what about cracks on aluminum cylinder heads
@MrDanielSoliz
@MrDanielSoliz 3 жыл бұрын
Back in the day there was aluminum plugs, don’t know if they still make them. The problem I found was they were hard to tap and install without guarding them up. But take your time use wd40 to tap the hole then use brake Cleaner and air and then seal and install. Repeat this for every plug. It took forever. But it can be done.

Nice job as always Danny. (pardon the pun, but) I couldn't help but 'crack up' twice at your 'king of crack' jokes...not that type of 'crack', or the other type you're thinking of..STOP IT!!...Thanks again for another great training session. I had a rough idea of the concept, but I've never seen it done. It was pretty amazing to see the whole process, and how it was almost invisible once finished. Nothing beats the cold like a good burrr....A little Ironic really, when you consider how the cracks were caused🤣👍🇦🇺
