I have been watching your videos for quite some time now and they inspired me to pick up some of my grandpas old shoes and try and bring them back to life. My grandpa suffers from Dementia and when he saw his old shoes (he calls them his dancers) his face lit up, a smile I haven’t seen in years came across his face, he was over the moon. All thanks to you.

I have watched a lot of shoe maintenance videos and read some blogs or books for learning the skills, but THE ELEGANT OXFORD still amazes me, and reveals a lot of detail in the videos. I gonna say this is the best shoe care channel that I had ever seen. I will recommend this channel to anyone who wants to know how to maintain a pair of shoes in my country. Really thanks a lot.

Nice one Buddy I have learnt a lot, I am ex military 60 years ago and my hobby is cleaning my shoes as though on parade. Love mirror shine and the polish you suggested is great Saphir. Truly grateful. Peace be your companion in life (Pax tibi sit particeps in vita.

Great content! Personally, I stopped using the mirror gloss because the wax content is so high. I have large dogs that don't really ever step on my feet except after I shine my shoes. I can get a good mirror shine with the colored high gloss, just takes a little longer, but it doesn't shatter like the mirror gloss. It does still crack. To fix the cracking, I actually use a hair dryer, gingerly, to melt the wax. I go over the cap a few times, letting it cool in between. Key is, you can't get it too hot, or you will have to strip it down like you did. BTW, I love that you mix colors and share it with us. Saphir isn't cheap, so I don't want to just go out and buy a bunch of colors. I haven't seen any videos that have color mixing, and I've watched a lot of videos. Thanks again!!

Kirby Allison lets you buy 5mL samples of Saphir for a few bucks. You can pick up a handful and try them out. I try to spread my business between Kirby and Preston (Elegant Oxford), they both provide so much value in their videos.

I would use heat to melt the wax. Spit shine boots for 20 years...U.S. ARMY (ABN)(Ret). Used Kiwi, saddle soap, small brush, cloth diaper and liquid wax. You do a great job putting a shine on a pair of shoes. Enjoy watching your video's.

As current serving British Military I can confirm that taking Preston’s advice on using Saphir has saved me a hell of a lot of time, before that I just used Kiwi Black (Not Kiwi Mirror Gloss as it tends to “mist” if it gets wet), Kiwi brown (one layer prior to one or two final layers when bulling gives it a better shine in my experience), a Selvyt cloth and a finishing technique of Water Bulling (soaking a cotton ball with water and going over the whole shoe).

rather than starting over, there is another way, I've used it when away from home and can't do a good polish on the road. a bit of time with a hair dryer and some gloss polish can get them back to a decent look... at least temporarily. The mild (don't go too hot) heat of the hair dryer re-melts the wax base. However, removing and redoing is the best way, they only crack like that when the layers get too thick.

Have you ever tried using adhesive tape to remove wax? It happened accidentally to me and it really does a great job at simply picking up the cracked wax. I wouldn't recommend using any tapes with strong adhesives of course.
@andrewwilliams23533 жыл бұрын
I accidentally discovered a way of repairing mirror shine many years ago. I was wearing black toe capped oxfords in which you could see your face to shave. I visited some friends on a very cold day and sat near to their open coal fire. The wax melted in the heat and the toecaps became dull. So now, if a toecap needs a repaired finish I hold a small hair drier to them until the wax softens, scrub them up a bit with a harder shoe brush until you can see the pores in the leather and hey presto, shine them up again. A pleasant side effect of this is that the warm wax goes into the leather on the vamp part and helps keep that supple and protected too.

been watching your videos and the progression of the channel for some time now. (Started watching with the video about shining a new pair of shoes) Question, will the quality of leather effect the outcome of a mirror shine? I have quality products, but not he best shoes. Nice looking, but under $100 dollars. I have not been able to get a mirror shine on the toe. it seems that some of the wax will not in-tangle itself in the pores of the leather.
