hi.i have a 6x10 cargo trail. not sure of weight but reg says 2990 gvwr. the height is aprox 861/2 " but my garage opening is only 84".due to hoa rules i need to keep it in my garage.i was able to get it in yrs ago by flattening the tire and it just barely made it in.this makes it impractical to use often.i'm thinking of keeping it on bare rims just to pull it in and out of garage with no clearance headaches .once in the drive way jacking it up installing the rimed tires and going.and doing the reverse to get it back in the garage.do you think it safe ,leaving the hitch connected to the truck ,to jack the trailer up from the center rear with a 3 ton floor jack and 2 jack stands lifting both wheels off the ground simultaneously to remove the rims and install the rims with tires on them to avoid having to jack one side at a time to make this operation faster?

I have the same jack I borrowed from a neighbor for good 5 years now, he doesn't use it on his boat, and I admit it's good engineering but recently it only pumps when you pump all the way down. I want to go back to the old cheap designed once as they great and easy to repair. You can buy 3-4 for the price of the one in that video. In fact I already found couple that have been thrown away. I just replaced the oil and they worked.
@bam69729 жыл бұрын
yup its only the seals that keep the oil in. usually .. sometimes its the actual piston seals inside and that's more of an expensive repair. and usually is not worth it. but if its leaking externally then this video will fix most jacks

i got the seals from my local hardware store called arones hardware and another where I actually got them from was called Fastenal. only 30 cents for the oring. and its still not leaking one drop. just checked it today... just take it apart and take the oring to your hardware store and match one up. that's what it did.... GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the video. Quick question. I have a small craftsman jack and it lifts up the car with no problem. The thing is when its all the way up holding the car it goes down little by little after a span of 10 minutes. Can this be the seals too??? I believe it is a 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 ton jack. Thanks
@bam69729 жыл бұрын
no its not those seals. its the plastic rings around the shaft that hold the pressure back. there either worn really bad or there is scoring in the cylinder. more than likely its junk. most of the time the cylinder is scored to the point where a new set of rings or plunger or whatever they call those plastic things is not going to seal properly and will leak again in time. you can try to take it apart and if the cylinder is in good shape then a new set of the plastic rings is all you need. but finding parts for an old jack might be troublesome.

Hey bro good info thank u.. my craftsman 3 ton floor jack seems like is leaking from same place as yours should I change the 2 o rings and the other plastic on cylinder and if so where can i get them...

the orings i got from a hardware store. i got mine from fastenal for less thand a buck. thats all you need. just clean it out really good and your set. i could not get the big oring to seat on the inside so i just reused mine. just replace the cap oring and your good to go. mines still working today.

I have the 4 ton craftsman floor jack and it is leaking from the back piston. Do you know if there is such a thing as a rebuild kit for this particular jack? What do you recommend I do to go about trying to repair this jack?
@bam697210 жыл бұрын
if its leaking to the outside of the jack, then tear it apart and replace the rubber o-rings as I say in this video. and it should fix it. but you might have to take it to a mechanic shop to have the nut taken off with a huge impact. mine was a 2 1/8 inch socket very big.

My Snap-On floor jack has a bottle with a hex nut like yours AND I can't get it to budge. The cast steel body is clamped securely in my vise (cushioned with aluminum bars). 1st I used my 3/4" breaker bar with an 46mm impact socket. No rotation. Next, I used my electric impact wrench. Again, NO JOY. Now I'm beginning to wonder if the nut is left-handed thread. Do you remember the rotation you used to put the nut back on? ALSO, how much torque did you use to tighten the nut? Please save me from destroying my hydraulic unit! Paul
@bam697210 жыл бұрын
electric impacts aren't at good as air impacts. get somebody to let you use there 20 gallon air compressor and there half inch impact... it will come off. there standard right hand thread. with a good impact.. it will come off. I couldn't even budge mine in a half ton vise and a 5 foot breaker bar.... I about broke the vise and bench trying to get it off. I went to sears and had my buddy take it off with there impact tools... also when I put mine back on I only torqued it back on with hand tools in a little vise...

I have a floorjack that would only pump two or three times then stop . So a friend of mine decides he is going to help me out and fill it. Well Mr. Genius , pulls up on the pad as he is trying to fill it up with oil. Now it really doesnt work. How do I bleed ALL of the air out of it?
@bam69729 жыл бұрын
if the jack was up when filling then its over filled big time. pop the cap then let the fluid rush out as the jack goes down. once its all the way down put the cap back on the fill hole. to bleed them just jack it all the way up then let it down. do this maby 15 times. it will get better overtime. never fill a jack with fluid that's been jacked up. it needs to be all the way down before you fill. otherwise it will over fill it and not want to come back down.
@1s.s.hotrodvair9 жыл бұрын
Sounds good but when I pump the jack with the valve closed, as if to go up it mimicks the handle motion .up.... Down .... Up... Down . single stroke up then down. What's up with that? Its a large heavy model with an Allen set screw and another flat blade screw at the base
@bam69729 жыл бұрын
S.s. Hotrodvair not sure what you mean. if you could make a vid and post it on youtube maby I can help you better. I still think its overfilled. try doing what I said. pop the fill cap then open the valve and push the jack down. it should push all the extra fluid out. then simply just replace cap and try it then.

hi bam6972 my jack was leaking from piston as well.I removed piston and stuff. There was no o-ring around or no sign. Is it possible oil might have lost its viscosity or some impurities around piston giving clearance for oil to leak ? thanks

I loosened the screw on the right until fluid came out, it was so dirty I didn't see the sticker that says don't adjust and now its not working. Did you have to adjust the jack after you replaced the fluid?
@bam697210 жыл бұрын
nope never messed with those screws. try and put the screw in about where it was and hopefully it will work. if not maby you got a lot of air in it. try popping the rubber cap off and add some jack oil.

I tore apart the floor jack several times (each time the jack leaked and I had to dump the hydraulic fluid). I double checked the o-ring and it was good. I noticed some scratches on the ram, so I spent 3 hours polishing the surface. This seemed like stopped the leak. I tested the floor jack over several days: ram all the way in, ram half-way in, ram all the way out. My floor jack started leaking again when the ram was extended all the way out.
@bam697210 жыл бұрын
yea its prolly time for a new one then. but you don't store your jacks with the ram out. you store them with the handle or screw half a turn out so it doesn't build up pressure from being cold then warming up and pushing past the seals. try filling it back up and then storing it with handle always half a turn out.
@flisko1238 жыл бұрын
+bam6972 mhm, did it start to leak cuz of that? i bought used jack for pocket money which was working normaly for like a month then it started to leak, eveytime i stopped using it i tightened the bolt quite hard with which you release the pressure, so it drops down

I have the same jack, but its not leaking it has fluid and wont stay lifted.. Do you know what screw i can use to bleed it?
@bam69728 жыл бұрын
shouldn't have to bleed it. bleeding it is just pumping it up fully then letting it down slowly a few times. if its bleeding down when lifting a car then its the piston inside that is all scored up. at this point I would just buy a new one.

The valve body on mine is peeing oil all over the place. Jacks up fine, put weight on it and the oil runs right out the filler cap, or somewhere.
@bam69728 жыл бұрын
the piston inside has cups to seal against the cylinder and if the cylinder is scored up or the cups are torn then it will leak down past the cups. and if overfilled push some oil out past the seals. take filler cap off then let jack all the way down. add jack oil and try it out. does the jack slowly go down with weight on it?

I have that exact same floor jack. I bought the actual seal kit from Shinn Fu America. I installed it, and the jack leaked about a month later. I think I may have damaged the o-ring upon installation.
@zell8633 жыл бұрын
Most likely you didn't oil them when did installation. They tear at first movement of rod.
@stanwardoshiro3 жыл бұрын
Zeljko Situm actually, what I found out was the piston got scratched the first time around. I used the floor jack on the gravel and scratched the piston shaft. Since it leaked after the first seal replacement, I disassembled it and sanded the piston using a shoe string and different grits of sandpaper. Eventually making my way to 1000 grit. I then ordered a variety of different size o rings that are slightly larger than the OEM. Floor jack hasn’t leaked since.
