How to fix a leaking garbage disposal step by step...
I noticed a leak after the garbage disposal jammed.
Took it apart & removed rust w/ electrolysis.
Repaired holes w/ JB Weld.
Coated metal with Rust Converter.
Finished with durable high heat paint.
Don't buy a new garbage disposal. That's what "they" want you to do.

Instead of oiling parts I would recommend a marine grease with all the soapy water that goes through the upper housing. Just my opinion, for what's its worth. Great video, keep it up.

I bought $6 "JB Well Waterwell" epoxy part from home depot and I put on the holes on the non-rust side and on the rusted side too and it worked out great for me. I don't want to give it up when the motor is still working on mine.

After over a year it's held up. NO reason it shouldn't as long as you take your time and do a proper job. Should last another 10 years.

I agree with it being a waste of time. It's going to leak again anyway just in a different spot. Just buy a new one. They're not that expensive.

Fiber glas resin will seal a tub in a washing machie or a disspoer and last nealy forever if it's first cleaned first.

That would probably work better than JB weld.

Never use petroleum products to oil up an o-ring. Always use silicone products on o-rings!

It had some type of oil on there. Can you recommend a specific type or brand for future reference?

Mine is still turning fine, just leaking through the case. I took it apart and have located 1 hole coroded through. I have cleaned all surface corrosion all around and have JB welded the hole. Will update after it has set and dried overnight.

Success! I let the JB weld cure for 5 hours, then I reassembled the unit using a quality all purpose clear DAP silicone sealant. I then let the unit cure overnight. I re-installed the unit this morning and have put it through some testing. So far no leakage!! It may not be a permanant fix, but I will at least get a few more months out of it before replacement. I just can't chuck something when I can do a repair.

Glad it worked! Mine worked for years after. I ended up moving 3 years after the repair so I wonder how much longer it lasted.

Hey Pete, one question. I put together my disposal sealing it with high temp automotive grease, but I just realized that I use Dial dish soap a lot.... And I'm pretty sure that's a good degreaser. Do you think that will be an issue?

Like sealed the edges or the center spindle area? It does have an O ring which should be water tight in itself. I'd just wait until you notice a leak. But yeah your right probably shouldn't use grease for that section. Let us know how it holds up. But I did notice even after 10 years, the spindle did still have oil.

It worked for a couple years until I sold my house. Not sure how it's fairing now. I wish I would know how much longer it lasted though, since it looks like I have a similar builder grade garbage disposal at this house. So I will have the exact same problem. Since I coated all the interior with rustproofing and then ceramic coating I think it's good to go for another 10 years. Hopefully longer. If you have the money to buy a new one that is the easiest option. If you are strapped for cash like I was at that point, there is nothing to lose with a repair attempt.

Its probably the same thing. The metal bottom has rusted through. If you have money buy one that is stainless steel. If you don't have money, like me you must take it apart and do exactly as I did in this video. If the nut is stuck, soak in vinegar to eat the rust, then loosen. Last option is to just buy a piece of PVC pipe and remove the garbage disposal, they are generally bad for your pipes anyways, and just use a strainer in that drain and throw stuff in the trash.

@@imim4136 Your entitled to your opinion but this worked for me. Epoxy is used to repair engine radiators for example and those vibrate plenty. Epoxy coated rebar is used in building bridges. Epoxy is used on many fiberglass parts including vehicle panels which also vibrate at speed.

Yeah Pete *As a professional I wouldn’t risk it and it’s not worth it. I am Very well aware what epoxy is. Like I said if I were to repair anything like this it would have to be welding, other than that chances are your going to have back pain going under that sink over and over*

Thanks for the comment. It may be easier to just buy a new one, if you have the money, but tearing down and repairing gives you so much more. It gives knowledge of how they work, common points of failure, and types of repairs that actually last. Also, experience and confidence to tackle larger more expensive projects later. Hope this helps.
