A leaking gutter joint can cause water damage if not rectified. Often, rectifying the problem can be as simple as replacing a missing or dislodged seal. In this video we look at one homeowners leaking gutter joint issue - why it was caused and stopping it from re-occurring.

Because it skipped all the difficult parts that actually make this sort of job quite difficult most times.

@@chrisofnottingham what did the video skip? how flipping hard is it to fill in the blanks. all he did was take it apart and clean it. its not machinery its a plastic gutter that's been made to be easy to installed and repair. what difficult parts?

I love it when you see an honest tradesman just getting on with the job like this rather than grimacing and talking the job up to be more work than it is. If everyone was as straight forward as this I'd not spend my time and money on tools and just get tradesmen out to do jobs! An example recently was when 2 brickys each wanted between £4-500 for a 1-man 1-day (more like half a day) job. Even if they wanted £20ph that's 180 even if it takes 8hrs but in reality it'd be more like 3 or 4. Call it 250 for all costs more than covered and a tip and I'd have been happy but they seem to always want to smash the arse out of it. Now I'm just going to do the job myself and so nobody gets the job because they pushed it too far. Talked themselves out of a decent days work for decent pay.

tradsmen are more expensive than tools. in this case all he did was clean possibly replace something that anyone could do as long as their legs and or arms arent disabled.

great video and advice, any advice when somebody has filed the gutter to make fitting the joining piece easier and filed too much so the compression isn't sufficient? I really don't want to replace then section as the other join is over my conservatory and makes it very difficult to get to. I have tried silicones, mastics gluing 2 gaskets together and putting rubber door draught excluder in. I get a result for a while but in the end water leaks through. Is there any such thing as a thicker gasket or have you come across anything on your travels that can be used as a thicker gasket? Many Thanks

Antony Howell did you resolve the problem? I need to file or notch out where the clips go!
@chrisofnottingham
@chrisofnottingham 4 жыл бұрын
@@robinmjones6197 Don't file it, use some mini ratcheting bar clamps (very cheap) to squeeze the joint to the gutter. If that doesn't do it, most likely the joint is not aligned to the gutter and it is going to leak anyway.

I have OSMA guttering and many joints have failed with age, none are like the one he shows in the video without brackets each side which make the replacement more difficult. Having replaced many with new seals some still leak, now I may have not replaced corectly but having taken them down and tried again and they still leak I am not that impressed, and OSMA seals and fittings are more expensive than other makes and no better, I shall in the spring replace all the guttering as it is not worth the cost and hassle to repair, the joints are twice the price of other makes.

But there is a larger amount of water that falls from the leaking gutter - you can see the build up of water on the ground and the wall long after the surrounding rain has dried off.
