How to fix a leaking shower waste (90mm)

Hi, This video shows how to fix a leak from a shower tray waste. It may help if you have noticed a water stain on your ceiling underneath where the water drains away. This isn't the only cause of a leak from the waste but it is very common. Sometimes just check that the upper part of the waste isn't loose, if it is just tighten it up and re-test first.

Very helpful, thank you. Just had a leak in my 8 month old en suite. While I have contacted the builder, this has put my mind at ease that it's not a massive issue where the whole thing has to be stripped out again. I think when cleaning out the trap today the sealant has dislodged

Thanks for watching. Yes that happens sometimes, or if you use a lot of bleach eventually it eats the rubber seal away and you need to replace it with a new one or in a pinch the sealant. AJ

Amazing video thank you, will give this a go soon. I haven’t got a leak but the silicon sealant under my white plastic piece has mould so want to remove and reseal, but hearing you saying it may be unnecessary I won’t know until I remove to inspect. Thanks 👍🏾

The key here is to prevent water getting behind the screwed insert piece by applying a small bead of silicone where this lip contacts with the shower tray. If this is sealed then in theory the lower rubber gasket is somewhat redundant as water should always escape from the trap waste before it rises to a point where the rubber gasket is needed.

Is it right that our trap is fixed into the tray? Or more likely that its been sealed making it harder to get out? It won't budge but don't want to damage it trying too hard. Getting a bit of a leak and think its under the tray, but it's on the ground floor so can't get under it to be sure.

More than likely it's sealed in, I don't know of any that are part of the tray. If you have a leak it may be coming from some other part of the waste don't forget such as the pipe joins or the tray may have a small crack in. If you see a water mark just after using the shower and then It dries out later in the day then try to put the water directly into the waste if you still get the water mark then its likely not the seal around the waste but the pipework. Hope that helps. Also you can buy a new waste of the same type, remove the top part and if its damaged by forcing then just re use the bottom part of the old waste and fit the new top half, discarding the original top part if damaged.

The one in my.video was a wirquin one 90mm in size. You could try tool station or Screwfix www.screwfix.com/p/shower-waste-chrome-90mm/661pj This may work but check the sizes of the threads Hope that helps AJ

Hi, just been watching your video as having the same issue in my shower waste. I'm struggling to find anywhere that sells replacement black rubber seals. If I were to use a ring of sealant in place of the washer, is it worth also running addition sealant around that white lip of the tray hole?

Yes sure that would work. In fact I have done similar in the past. Just put sealant on the lower part.

8:50 so I have done exactly the same and can my waste is dropping down. The water also escapes from the plastic cup (without sealant) causing the leak to the downstairs ceiling...not sure what I can do when I have no access to the ceiling from downstairs

You can put sealant around the bottom part of the waste so when you tighten it.up it seals to the bottom of the tray. I hope you get it fixed.

I have water trapped under the shower tray. it makes a squishy sound. It’s leaking via the drain, which was sealed before as it was leaking through the celling. Shall I just try to get as much excess water out and seal it again or just need to call in someone to remove it and dry under the tray? Thank you

Oh wow that sounds more complicated. If it were my choice I would remove the waste, dry out as much as you can then re fit later, but if you need to use it everyday then the best course of action is to remove the whole tray and start again as It is likely the floor underneath has been affected. good luck....

This one is a 90mm waste. But it's entirely possible to use silicone in one continuous bead around the top of the underside piece if you can't find a washer to fit or if you don't have time.

Hi John, thats a very specific problem. I have seen it before though. If your shower waste is connected to the toilet waste (Or same waste pipe) and there is no way of letting air in (Vent pipe or air admittance valve) when you flush the toilet, it is very possible the vacuum created by flushing the toilet will suck out the water from the shower trap leaving a small amount in the bottom. Hope that points you in the right direction. AJ
