A leaking tap connector can be very difficult to fix if there is restricted access to the tap tails. Most bath taps are difficult to access, but some are almost impossible to reach using tools, as in this video. Here I cut off the leaking tap connector and used a John guest speedfit tap connector which was ¾ inch female to 15mm push fit. These types of tap connector make an almost impossible job relatively simple.

It was one of the busiest days at work this year, when I got a text message saying we had a leak. I asked one of the bosses if I could finish early to go and sort the leak, but unfortunately a rush job came up and I got stuck on site till 5pm, then had to sort this out when I got home. I don’t mind admitting that I swore terribly during this job 😉 I hope everyone has a great Bank holiday weekend 😉

@@ultimatehandyman I saw a great tip in another video on KZbin from Plumberparts. In your case open up fully the bathroom sink/basin tap prior to turning the water back on at the stopcock, with the drain obviously open. This will help remove full pressure from the system. Then when you get back upstairs in the bathroom you can effectively control the stopcock via the basin tap closing it off gradually until you have full pressure being put on the new joint meaning you can easily keep an eye on the situation as you return full pressure. If something has gone wrong you don't get full mains pressure coming out the failed repair whilst you are downstairs as the basin tap is taking off the load. Simple idea but not something I had thought of prior to seeing it in the recent PlumbersParts video.

Good video as always. It is worth keeping a couple of push fit stop ends in your tool kit for situations like this as then you can pop them on and turn the water back on for the rest of the house whilst figuring out and implementing the fix rather than having to keep the water off for the whole house. Keep them in a plastic bag so they stay clean of dirt etc and have a specific place for them so you can find them easily when the time comes. Good to have you back putting out content! P.S. I posted in reply to someone else's comment the following which might be useful: @Ultimate Handyman I saw a great tip in another video on KZbin from Plumberparts. I'm not sure about service valves to be honest. Only last week my brother-in-law's sister turned one and it started leaking, she could not get a plumber out and so I went and replaced it one night after work, it was in a right pain in the backside position, under the sink and entangled with several other pipes and cables. It took me a couple of hours to replace it! I know that it is good practice to fit them, but the service valve is often the cause of another problem. All the plumbing in this house is copper, yet we have had about 4 leaks since we moved in - although all the leaks have been due to fibre washers at tap connectors etc. My Mrs had gone out for the day with the kids, she returned home after I had fixed the leak and made my tea etc. 😂 Thanks for the comment

I'm an ex Plumbing & Heating Engineer of 27yrs experience. These tap connectors are bloody brilliant. You can do them up hand tight, and I've never had one leak. Best thing since sliced bread 👍🏻👍🏻. The JG braided stainless hoses will need to be tightened with a tap wrench as you will not get them tight enough by hand.

I like the JG tap connectors - but I intend to gradually remove all braided flexible pipes from the house after now having had 2 catastrophic burst pipes. If the braiding corrodes slightly, then the inner rubber pipe can no longer hold the pressure and ruptures. The non-braided flexi pipes you used look interesting, as presumably these don't suffer from this issue.

Only used a push fit the other day for the first time. So easy it feels like cheating! Good video Chez, and nice to see you back making videos. I missed the last one. Anyway, I've got to sort out a toilet cistern. I've got a new type dual flush valve to fit to it, and a new type float valve. I've needed to replace the water fill valve in my downstairs toilet for months, but I'm reluctant to do it because the water pipe is bent out of the wall and I just know that the new valve will not be the same length of BSP connection. @@ultimatehandyman Sounds the same as this one. Pipe buried in the wall, and quite tight on the connection. I'm not sure that there's actually room to alter it! It's about the last length of buried pipe here, and so it'll have to be replaced at some time anyway. I've been putting off the evil day as you do! I've got a new valve with a brass BSP connection. Any external pipe or fitting can be effected by frost, so it's best to insulate the pipe and fittings. Sun light is a real problem with these, as it can make the plastic brittle. We have had a few leaks in that area, the first time it was when the girlfriend was showering one of the kids, the water was going under the shower screen seal and leaked through the ceiling. Second time was when the union washer leaked on one of the bath tap unions - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpTPoHiJp92VpM0 I'll start by cutting away the thick pieces of paint, where bubbles have formed previously (that paint is now hanging down). I'll then check that the plasterboard is sound, then I'll seal that with some Zinsser Gardz. I'll then apply Gyproc easi-fill to the whole area, let that dry and then sand it down using the Mirka Deros. Then I'll stain block the whole area, ensuring the edges are feathered out. Once that is dry I'll give the ceiling two coats of emulsion. Very similar to what I did here- kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKjEkKCVh7CKoNk&t I won't be fixing the ceiling, until I have replaced both upstairs bathrooms though ;-) Thanks for the comment

Used these a lot. Hate fibre washers, always use rubber ones. These days I tend to use the JG flex hoses. Fit and forget and allow for slight misalignment Mainly I’m here for all the comments from the “expert old plumbers” who tell you that you’ve done this all wrong... 🙄

Ouch, Chez! Now imagine that the tap(s) are on the length of the bath in the middle and that the length, head and.... well, other head end, butt up against 3 walls on three sides. Swearing is mandatory in this situation. Been there, bought the tee shirt and used many dirty words. Search George Carlin seven dirty words... if you dare!!! Mucky language.

There has to be a better way of connecting bath taps to the water supply. Perhaps if they all came with a 18 inch copper 15mm tube, instead of a 3 inch long BSP thread, you could then just do the connections at floor level, rather than trying to access the impossible! George Carlin is great ;-) Thanks for the comment 👍

@@ultimatehandyman That sounds like a bloody good idea. 18" tails. It was also my own bath (that problem) Thankfully the taps were on a stud wall and I could cut out from the bedroom side. Think I'll revisit Carlin's "fear of germs" skit.

Been to a call out with someone that has used one of these JG speedfit connectors and literally was not even tight not nipped down nothing... same issue water in the downstairs blah blah... majority of plumbing related issues or leaks is competence.

I think you are right. The plumbers that did the plumbing in this house were certainly not competent!

Which evil minded persons ever invented the old bath tap copper fittings in the first place? I have used these and the flexible hoses and my life expectancy was extended as I missed out on all the stress.

I'm sure they would be better if they used a different material for the seal. The fibre washers just don't seem suitable! Thanks for the comment

Try use a crows foot wrench for those tight spots

I tried that, but it was too bulky to fit in the gap, as my crow's foot wrenches are quite heavy-duty. Thanks for the comment 👍

But why faff around with a tap connector, copper pipe AND a flexi? Surely simpler just to fit a pushfit flexi tap connector. You've already done a video on flexi tap connectors.

Flexi tap connectors do not fit on traditional taps kzbin.info/www/bejne/haaylZ6ggrF5gaM&t They only fit modern mixer taps, as they normally have a small male connector at the end of the flexi tail, which screws into the female part of the tap. Traditional bath taps have a 3/4 inch BSP male fitting, so you need a tap connector (unless you get one of the special flexi 3/4 inch to 15mm push fit connectors that I showed in the video) Thanks for the comment 👍

@@ultimatehandyman no, that is true, monobloc tap tails won't fit a normal tap. But standard flexible tap connectors, available in either 1/2 in or 3/4 inch BSP, with either 15mm or 22 compression or pushfit will. What I was saying is that they are all that is needed, and less hassle and probably expense than a tap connector, length of copper, and length of Flexi. Literally cut your pipe, fix flexi to the tap, and connect it to your pipe. Done. It's standard in many installations anyway for ease of installation/adjustment of fixture.

@@ultimatehandyman I also did a job recently where one of these all plastic tap connectors had been fitted. Don't know if it was the case with the one you used, but the nut at the top was fixed in place i.e. when it's being tightened on the tap, the push fit connection will twist too. It had been on there a while so was pretty stiff to get off. Not sure I would trust the longevity of the o ring once it's been twisted round a few times, so if you're going to use one, I think the ones with the brass nut on that rotates separately is much better.

Push fit … NO, bad choice. Movement of the pipe work can cause the connector to loosen. And avoid flexibles under a bath as they likely won’t last the+20 years that a bath tub will and you’ll have an out of sight installation leading to a flood you can’t access!
