Another of my DIY videos. This time it's about curing a water leak around my Velux window.
I diagnosed the problem as being wind blown rain getting under the roof tiles during blustery conditions. The foam strips on the flashing had disintergrated.
I show how I replaced the foam.
Here is the link to the foam product I used.

The fault finding and repair you have done is better than most professional roofers would ever do. The video is really well filmed - great job. Well done and thanks.

An exceptional explanatory video. I wish all videos on KZbin were this clear and to the point. Our newly installed velux roof light is leaking in the exact same place. The builder has said he will fix it, but good to know it is a relatively easy fix if, for whatever reason, I need to do this myself. I'm sure it takes time a lot of time and effort to produce a video like this for the benefit of others - thank you for going to the trouble, I really appreciate it.

Donsimon0, you are welcome. This was one of the quickest videos I've done. Some of the boat share ones take ages. I spend 1/2 my week (2 and 1/2 days ) working on my wife's KZbin channel. she spends 2 and 1/2 days to, so its 35 hours of work to produce one 15 min , #video Maybe the builder forgot to fit the foam?

Very helpful video. Just had exactly the same problem. The breathable membrane underneath was overwhelmed by the quantity of rainwater. The foam “seals” had perished after 10 years. Used the same product you did. And made sure there were no gaps. Hopefully this will sort the issue.

Your front apron flashing also has only about 50mm lap onto the course of tiles in front of the velux, also bend the metal apron flashing back on itself forming a welt, on the first cut tile on eitherside as water can still track side ways and finally reseal all exposed screw fixings as these also fail, good work though if you are a diyer.👍

I was thinking of replacing my 2 old velux windows because i have this problem with 1 but im intending to do a little survey because i think you have found the problem . The modern throw away age is a curse.

Forgive my ignorance, but I am surprised that given the fall of your window the cause of the ingress is the foam under the tiles - I would have thought that so long as the channels were clear and the flashing at the top is in good shape, this should have run off without a problem. I am faced with a similar problem on a much gentler fall (questionable really whether a velux should ever have been fitted) and will certainly try this as well as checking around. It has functioned for 10 years without a problem so I was hoping it might have been moss growth. Difficult to access which is why I haven't been able to diagnose it properly yet.

Remarkably similar roofing to what we have in Australia. And yes that Velux foam just turns to dust like an Egyptian mummy! A disgrace for an expensive product IMO.

Battling with new velux. Lots of leaks. Builders installed a flashing kit EDW SK10 2000 (red line) with a blue line GGL SK10 3070. Is this a mismatch given the different colours? Would be so grateful for any advice.

The velux must be fitted gauge with tiles & battens this is a must or they don’t get roofed in properly 👍

Thanks a lot for this excellent video and for including the link to the actual material you used. Very few people on KZbin care to do that. Also, great to see how you worked around varying profile shapes by shaping the foam. Which tool did you use to so cleanly and smoothly shape the foam profile when you attached two strips on top of each other? A normal Stanley knife or did you have something else? All the best.

Basically the real problem is the Velux flashing kits for tiles are woefully inadequate unlike the slate flashing kits which work quite well.

Thanks for the really great video. Did you not think about just using spray foam which might have been a lot easier?
@scottmcdonald3019
@scottmcdonald3019 Жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen , That's a great idea. I did think about it but that keeps expanding and is sticky. So you cant just put the nozzle under as it will push up the tiles, so you'd have to over spray then carefully cut it back. Also it degrades very quickly in the sun. IF you try using it gives us the feedback results and if it's good i'll do a video on it.

The foam strip method is ok. Something like Trade Soudal Roof & Insulation PU expanding foam should do the trick better and get a really good seal.
