My friends 1999 Lexus GS would crank but not start. I walk you through the diagnostic process I used when I was a mechanic. I also walk you through the repair and the success of getting it to Start! Spoiler.. it was a bad fuel pump lol. Correction, a viewer just let me know this vehicle has a timing belt and not a chain lol Live and learn lol The fuel pump did fix it though

My man, I NEVER post comments on KZbin videos but this time a comment is warranted. You saved my ass and my sanity within the first few minutes of this video. I'd replaced my spark plugs, PCV valve and my coils and nothing was working. My 2006 ES330 would crank and not turn over. I had no codes or any errors to research. Lo and behold, I stumbled upon your video and you show that the FOB has to be near the ignition which was news to me. My FOB broke off from my key and I'd never considered this before watching your video. Well, after conceding defeat, I went down to my car in a final effort to try to start her up, put the fob next to the ignition while turning the key with needle-nosed pliers, and bam! my car fired right up. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!!!

My 2000 GS 300 with 185K miles is not starting. IT turns on but will not crank up. It has been slow to take off to get up to speed. Been at the shop for 5 days they say it is a key issue. They checked the computer and say that is good. I will have them check the fuel pump and pray that is the issue. Very informative post. Thanks for sharing

Glad you liked it Peajay. If it had been slow to take off and then get up to speed b4 it finally would crank but not start..... then yes that could be a bad fuel pump (I’d replace the fuel filter too if it’s the fuel pump) I usually will replace the pump and filter at the same tome but didn’t here because i don’t have a car lift. Again I’d test for voltage at the fuel pumps connector while someone else is cranking and also spray starter fluid into the intake to confirm it’s a fuel issue before replacing the fuel pump. Either that or do a fuel pressure test. My concern is ...... usually mechanics don’t take advise from customers, but you can try. They could be right and it is the key.... along with whatever was causing it to be slow to take off ... so it could be multiple problems. Ie fuel pump or transmission or ignition issue ( idk was the check engine light on?) With old cars especially; multiple things can go wrong at the same time. One just breaks completely before the others. Hopefully it’s just one thing wrong in your case. Let us know what happens. Good luck !

@@mikes3852 I would check for codes first… I’ve seen a bad coolant pressure sensor cause that. But don’t just replace the sensor! See if it’s throwing a code then then test the sensor if it is. I’ve also seen fuel pumps that are going bad do that too.But you wanna test the fuel pressure to confirm. Really you should use a digital storage oscilloscope to look at the current graph to test that . But that’s an expensive tool you may not have. So yeah I’d check for codes and if you can’t test the other stuff you may want to have a mechanic diagnose the problem. Hope that helps 👍

Thank you MJ100k for your troubleshooting video. I am currently trying to fix my Lexus GS300 crank no start issue. I have spent a lots of money and time on it and here is the detail as follows. Any advices is very appreciate. First, I have a 2002 GS300 2JZGE overheat with white smoke from engine, and eventually just die on the road. Then it will only crank but won't start anymore. Towel it home check code but nothing shows up. Coolant is low so I add some and verify no leak. Turn on AC, and the fan will run too so changed a coolant temp sensor. But it still crank no start. Then I check spark plugs there are sparks coming out OK, and the injectors are clicking OK when trying to start. Air filter is clean, no physical vacuum leak that I can find with the smoke test machine. I also checked the spark and injector wires and they all have 12V power. I double checked all wires on the engine bay and they looked all fine. I then replace all new after market coils, sparks and fuel injectors but the result is the same. Crank and no start. After found your video, I spray starter fluid and engine will turn on for like 2 seconds and die . So I changed a new OEM Lexus GS300 fuel pump and a OEM regulator, and now it will start but die within 2 seconds. Then I opened the valve cover gaskets to make sure no visible damage as I previous changed the gaskets to fix the valve cover leaking issue, and I also visually checked the engine main gasket to make sure there is no coolant leak and all pistons and valves all visually looks good. I check the compression and cylinder 1 is pretty low like 50-60, but this should not cause crank no start as other cylinder are within speck. I then double checked the timing belt and they all looks good and aligned correctly. I changed both the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors but they did not fix the problem. And worse, now my GS300 can only crank and no start. It was able to start up for like 2 seconds. I spray starter fluid again, and it did not make any difference any more. Then I get a bi-direction scan tools and found I have no throttle position response so I change the TPS because when I press the throttle, it won't response. This does not fix the issue either. As of this writing, I am running out of options on fixing this car. I don't know what else I can do. This car has air (I replace MAF too), sparks and fuel for sure. No code. Check wire and no grounding issue or wiring problem. Fuses are all OK. My next plan is to check the fuel pressure as I never check that as I don't know how, but my bi-directional scan tools does not show any fuel issue as live data show injects and fuel pump are On when I turn the ignition on. I don't know what else I can do after this. Maybe to replace a ECM? Just try to share here with other owner having the similar issue, and seeking advice before I spend more money on this car. Thank you in advance.

A Google search is showing me the min compression spec is 156. (I’m not 100% sure thats right but it sounds reasonable) You’re showing 50/60 psi… You have to get to the bottom of that. You can’t see one cylinder that much different than the others and breeze past that. The overheating and white smoke makes me think maybe blown head or crack in the head or block. I would do a block test if I were you. You may have a blown head or crack in the block/head. Sorry for the bad news. Let us know what fixes it.

I have the exact, exact same issue on my 98 GS300, after fitting 2 other fuel pumps, we found out we used a 4 cylinder pump instead of a 6 cylinder pump so there wasn't enough pressure, engine would crank, start and run for 2 seconds before cutting out. Thanks Alexander. When you diagnose a vehicle you want to avoid just comparing the symptoms to another car and assuming it’s the same part causing the problem. The exact same crank no start sound can also come from a bad fuel pump relay or fuse... or corroded electrical wires going to the fuel pump. (I’ve seen all of these things go wrong on different cars. If you are not able to do the troubleshooting like I did, you may want to take it to a mechanic. Unless you’re feeling lucky and just want to guess that it’s the fuel pump. I’ll try to make a more in depth no start video, sometime this summer) that goes thru many different diagnostic paths

Im working on a 98 jag that has been sitting for about 4 years. it cranks good and strong but does not start. it has brand new battery. i believe the gas tank is full because i went to add fresh gas and nothing was able to go in and a bit came back out. Could it be bad stale gas behind my crank no start condition? should i try to drain the gas and put fresh? I had this happen along time ago and drained the gas and put new spark plugs and it ran mint. What do should i try?
@MJ100k
@MJ100k Жыл бұрын
Yeah I would start with trying to drain most of that gas out and put in fresh. I would also do an oil change. Then you can try using the starter spray like I did… if it briefly starts then …. You know you have a fuel problem…. If you see you have a fuel problem try this this -- try and start the car but have one of your friends hit the gas tank with a rubber mallet. (Not too hard) if it starts then… your fuel pump is bad. If it is a fuel problem but hitting the tank doesn’t work … the fuel pump may not be getting the signal to come on - and you’ll have to check the wires to the fuel pump like it did. If it’s not a fuel issue … then see if your getting spark… you can buy a spark checker off Amazon and see if you can see a spark in it while someone else turns the key. That’s probably enough to get you started … let us know what you find…. Oh also does it have a regular key or a key fob? If it’s a key fob make sure the battery in the fob is good.

Well don’t feel too bad. Most of us have broken something on our own cars when trying to fix them. Myself included lol Problems in car electrical wiring include: Short to power, short to ground, high resistance and open circuits. A fuse is going to blow if there is too much current going through it. It’s a circuit protection device. But fuses can’t tell if you have created an open circuit. That’s what I’m hoping happened to you. I hope you haven’t damaged the cars computer. Well unfortunately I can’t teach you how to diagnose an electrical circuit in this reply. But I’m thinking your best bet would be to take your dash back out and try and see exactly what wires you may have pinched or what connector or wire you accidentally opened. If nothing looks out of place you can carefully try to wiggle some parts of the harness while you try and start the car. If it starts when you’re wiggling or moving some wires you know that there is an open or loose connection near where you’re wiggling. Hopefully you just have to make a simple wiring repair and then carefully reinstall the dash. If that doesn’t work... you’ll have to buy a digital multi meter and learn some electrical diagnostics or you’ll have to take it to a good mechanic. Hope that helps... let us know what fixes it ! 👍

I have a friend who has this car that has the same issue a crank sometimes but doesn’t always start it’s not the battery it cranks normally someone told him it was the Crankshaft positioning sensor however it does have the P0440 code for the evap leak
@MJ100k
@MJ100k 4 жыл бұрын
I would think that if it was the crankshaft position sensor... then it would have a code that mentioned that sensor.. Evap leaks don’t typically cause no starts. But I’m not gonna say it’s impossible. Are there any other codes ? I’ve seen a couple things cause intermittent no starts. (There are others things also but) One was a bad coolant temperature sensor. It told the car is was very cold but in reality it was actually hot. The car “thinking” it was cold ordered the fuel injectors to deliver a super rich fuel mixture.. causing the car not to start once it had been driven around. The second time I saw an intermittent no start was a mini van that wouldn’t start once it got hot... that time it was the fuel pump. We found that by using a DSO digital storage oscilloscope. We saw the graph of the fuel pump current get weird about 30 seconds before the car would stop running and then it would not start again. I would recommend you have your friend take the car to a good mechanic. Unless you know how to diagnose cars or have a DSO lying around or you just want to start replacing random parts and hope you get lucky 😆 Good luck 👍

what causes p0466 i have that now on my lexus v8. i know it needs oil change and full tune up. but it seems to run fine
@MJ100k
@MJ100k Жыл бұрын
P0466- is Purge Flow Sensor Circuit Range… It’s related to the evap emission system. That system helps keep fuel vapors from being released into the atmosphere. It could be caused by a bad gas cap… vent solenoid , charcoal canister or a crack in one of the evap lines. To test it you’d need a scan tool and a smoke machine. That code is not likely to keep your car from starting … if that was your original concern

Man I appreciate your video. I’ve got an 2007 ES350 and before yesterday it crank but smoked from under the hood (near the injectors) and idled horribly. Now, it wants to crank but just won’t. And if it does, it’s only taking gas some times. It MAY drive as long as my foot is on the gas pedal. The moment I release my foot from the pedal, the car turns off. I wonder if my fuel pump could be the problem as well?? I think I’m going to follow what you’ve done on this vid verbatim. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
@MJ100k
@MJ100k 2 жыл бұрын
First I would see what’s smoking. I hope you don’t have a fuel leak. If you have a fuel leak fix that first - cause you could cause a fire. Get a fire extinguisher and have it near buy just in case. Hopefully someone just spilled some oil or something and it’s just burning off. But better safe than sorry. I’ve seen a car briefly catch fire in the shop once and we had to run and get the extinguisher. . 2- when diagnosing a no start what happens a lot is-- you keep trying to start it and doing so drains the battery. So I would test the battery and if it’s low hook up some jumper cables to another car to charge the battery or buy a jump box. This way you can do your test without draining the battery. . 3- once you’ve done 1 and 2 you can check for codes… investigate any codes that look fishy. Then check for fuel and spark. I didn’t use my spark checker in this video but you may want to use one. There’re cheap. If fuel and spark are good …. Move on to compression. Look up some videos on how to do a compression test and buy a compression tester. Hopefully you haven’t blown a head gasket or piston rings etc. Hint: sometimes if you blow a head gasket you can see bubbles in the coolant reservoir while the car is running. It’s unlikely to be security cause it will start and run (with your foot on the gas anyway) The only other thing it could be is timing. So I would investigate that last. Hope that helps, let us know what fixes it 👍

Also- (I forgot about this one) If the car will start and stay running only with your foot on the gas. Try cleaning out the throttle body. Alittle bit of air is supposed to get past the throttle plate when the car is idling. But if dirt and gunk covers this area, the car will start but won’t idle unless your foot is on the gas (which opens the throttle plate) note: some older fords don’t want you to clean this part so double check for your car… but all you have to do is buy a can of throttle body cleaner and get a toothbrush and a rag. Look up a KZbin video to see the process, but it’s usually pretty easy and inexpensive. Hope that helps !

Were you not supposed to try and check for voltage with the pump plugged in in order to verify that the wire is able to carry the current load?
@MJ100k
@MJ100k 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to make sure the wire is able to carry the current load you can do a voltage drop test with a Digital multi meter across the wire while it’s plugged in. If it’s dropping more than about half a volt there may be some corrosion or damage somewhere on that wire. But if you just want to check the available voltage at the end of the circuit you can unplug the connector and check it how I did. You could leave it plugged in and check it… but then you’d have to back probe the connector. Plugged in or not if you just check the voltage at the end of the circuit you are not checking the ability of the circuit to carry a current load. In order to do that you’d have to check for voltage drop across the entire circuit. Which is good to check if you’re concerned about the integrity of that circuit. Sometimes a hint would be if you see corrosion somewhere or you suspect a pinched or damaged wire somewhere on that circuit. Its been my experience that it’s rarely an issue…but it is good to check sometimes 👍

Google - “lexus gs300 security reset” Depending on what year you have - there are different ways of resetting the security system. You can try the one for your car and see if that works. If that doesn’t work you may need to take it to the dealer. (Unless you have a scan tool that can read body codes, and you’re good at electrical diag.) It may be some bad wiring somewhere or the anti theft control module could be bad.

Bad ECUs are pretty rare. They can fail in a variety of ways. Only bad ECU I ever saw was one on a civic that had been on fire. It would barely start… I found the ecu wasn’t completely grounding the signal for the coil packs. The ECU is basically a giant grounding device. Other symptoms include not starting at all or not communicating with the scan tool etc. Before jumping to a bad ECU diagnosis I would check to see if you have any trouble codes,check the fuel pressure, make sure your spark plugs and coil packs are good, clean out the throttle plate.. if you have a scope I would look at the graph of the throttle position sensor. Other than spark plugs and cleaning the throttle plate…. Don’t go spending a bunch of money throwing parts at the car. If you don’t have the tools to diagnose it… I would just take it to a dealer and pay for an hour of diag… See what they think it is. I had to do that years ago on a tricky Acura problem before I went to mechanic school. I threw a bunch of parts at the car and it didn’t fix the problem. Then I took it to a dealer and they fixed it quick for like 200$ lol

Hmmm, it could be the starter going bad. Or it could be a loose electrical connection somewhere. The next time it doesn’t start... I would see if you’re getting power at the starter signal wire while someone else is turning the key to start the car. If you get power at the signal ie small wire you may have a bad starter. You can try tapping the starter lightly with a hammer while someone else turns the key to confirm the starter is bad. If it’s starts when you tap it it’s definitely the starter going bad. Be careful because on some types of starter hitting it can damage it internally. If you do not get power, you’ll have to work your way back thru the starter signal circuit until you get power when the key is turned. Then you’ll be able to see at what point the signal power stopping. Maybe a loose connection or bad wire somewhere... Maybe a bad starter relay etc... You’ll need the circuit diagram electrical diagnosis tools and knowledge of how to test electrical circuits. If your not good at electrical you’ll have to take it to a mechanic who is. I do have a video on no crank no starts on my channel if you wanna check it out. Good luck br careful and let us know what fixed it 👍

It’ll start and run for a couple minutes then the engine will die on me car would still be on tho. Right when I turn it on it makes a quirky noise and the engine tried to stay on but it seems like it doesn’t have enough juice. You got any suggestions what the problem is. The battery starts the car, alternator recharges the battery. You can test the battery with a battery load tester from harbor freight. If the battery test ok (when the car is not running) with a load on it (press the button on the load tester to apply a load) the battery is ok. If the battery load tester shows about 13.5-15 volts when the car is running the the alternator is most likely ok. If you suspect your mechanic is incorrect you can take the car to another mechanic or try to diagnose it if you feel confident and have the tools, just be careful and take it to another mechanic if your unsure of what you’re doing. I didn’t buy the fuel pump for this Lexus, the owner did when I recommended it. So I’m not sure what it cost but they are usually about 100-200$ The dealership will have the best parts but NAPA usually has good parts as well. Hope that helps 👍

If you don’t have a battery tester (that can also apply a load) then you can remove the battery and take it to AutoZone or mechanic shop and have them test it. If it’s bad replace it and then test the alternator to make sure it’s charging the battery. You could also have a friend try to jumpstart your car. First hook up the jumper cables and let your friends car run for a few minutes to charge the battery. If it starts then drive it to a mechanic or Autozone and have them check the battery and charging system. Hope that helps 👍let us know what fixed it 👍

@MJ100k 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm. Where did you get the sensor? It’s kinda rare but once in a while a non OEM sensor won’t work right. I wouldn’t jump right to that possibility but it’s something to consider. Are you sure you changed the bank b sensor and not the bank a sensor? At this point you can try swapping the two (if they are the same size) … clear the code and then see if the code switches to bank a sensor… if it does you’ll know you changed the wrong sides sensor. …. I Googled it and it appears your car has a timing chain and not a belt. So it’s doubtful the chain is broken. You could double check by taking off the valve cover and taking a look. … Its doubtful this is it… but make sure your cars engine has oil in it, once in a while that can cause codes. But they are usually variable valve train codes though. Only other thing is your gonna need to Find the oem trouble tree for this code. Which is probably gonna tell you to check the sensor itself with maybe a resistance test … then if that’s ok you have to check the wiring to the sensor with a digital multi meter . Ie - voltage wire, ground wire, signal wire (if applicable) etc and then work back from there. Well I hope that helps… Let us know what fixes it 👍

Yes I believe it (bank a aka bank 1) is on the passenger side on this car. Bank 1 / Bank A is always gonna be the bank with the number 1 cylinder in the firing order. So if you Google your cars year make and model with - firing order or spark plug wire diagram you’ll find a diagram. Or you could always unplug a coil pack or fuel injector.. and turn the key to engine on but don’t start it. The computer may see that the sensor is unplugged and throw a code for the cylinder that’s unplugged.

@MJ100k
@MJ100k 2 жыл бұрын
The location of the camshaft position sensor wires should be on the connector that plugs into the sensor. IDK if you have a 2 wire sensor or a 3 wire sensor. 2 wire is gonna be a 5 v reference and a ground wire.. three wire is gonna be 5v reference, a ground and a signal wire. You’ll have to find the diagnostics troubleshooting procedure for this code for your vehicle. (Btw I wouldn’t recommend getting sensors from anywhere other than the dealer or maybe NAPA) Sometimes it’s a simple resistance check for the sensor and checking for power and ground from the sensor wires with your digital multi meter. Sometimes they want you to look at the wave form with a digital storage oscilloscope. But to know which color wires are for what… and what test to run .. you’ll need to find the factory troubleshooting procedure.

@MJ100k
@MJ100k 8 ай бұрын
If starts and dies …IF it’s a fuel issue… It’s more likely to be a fuel pressure problem than fuel signal problem. The signal is an electrical issue. If the signal to turn on the fuel pump ie. The voltage to the fuel pump when you turn the key. It’s more likely to fail all the time, than to work briefly and then stop. If it’s a fuel problem causing your start and then die issue, I think it’s more likely fuel pressure. So maybe a weak pump or clogged fuel filter (or both) or clogged fuel injectors (less likely) So you can either ask a mechanic to use starter fluid to confirm the fuel pump how I did in the video or you could also buy a fuel pressure tester and check the pressure like that. 👍 It could also be something else, like a clogged air filter or some other sensor. You can check the air filter to see if it’s super dirty. You can also check the vehicle for trouble codes. Usually a bad sensor will set a code.

If it will stay on then... that usually means the area in your throttle body under the throttle plate is dirty. All you have to do is get a toothbrush and a can of throttle body cleaner and clean out that area under the throttle plate. Cars are designed to get a small amount of air under the throttle plate during idle. If there is no air coming in there it will start but it won’t be able to idle. If you car won’t stay on when you hold the accelerator a little.... then it’s not the throttle body issue. So I need to know if if will stay on when you hold the accelerator a little.

Describe what happened when it stoped… I hope your engine didn’t lock up… If I were there.. First I’d check the battery , it may be strong enough to turn stuff in the car on but not strong enough to start it… Then I’d see if I could turn the engine over (put a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt and see if it will turn with a breaker bar) to make sure it’s not locked up. If the battery is ok and the engine turned over then I’d try and see if anything electrical is shorted out. Once I saw a defective new starter draw so much current (out of nowhere) that the car cut off while it was driving and wouldn’t start back up till I changed the battery and starter. But that’s a very very rare thing to happen. So you have to do some test to see what’s wrong with your car. If your not sure how to do these test take it to a mechanic. If you’ve got a short that bad, it’s dangerous to mess with if you don’t know what you’re doing. Good luck , let use know what fixes it. It could be something very minor too 🤷‍♂️ fingers crossed 🤞

There can be lots of reasons why a car won’t start. Fuel pump - or wiring to the fuel pump including relays / fuses. Starter relays / fuses or wiring to the starter. Bad battery or loose/ corroded connections. Bad gas. No gas in the tank due to fuel level sensor showing full when it’s empty. Locked up engine. No engine compression due to bad rings etc. Timing may be off. Timing belt or chain problems. Lack of spark due to ignition system issues. Air filter super clogged up. Bad spark plugs. Security system problems. Bad key fob.
@MJ100k
@MJ100k 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t jump right to the ECU unless you have some evidence pointing to the ECU being bad. Evidence for a bad ECU includes -- If you hook up a scan tool, it won’t communicate with the vehicle… But the scan tool works and will communicate with other vehicles. If you have a high level scan tool you can run a network check. A network checks in with every computer in your vehicle that’s on the network. If the ECU doesn’t show up in the network check that would be cause to investigate. Also sometimes a bad ECU will keep blowing the ECU fuse. Then (once the vehicle is off and the ECU goes to sleep) when you unplug the ECUs connectors the fuse stops blowing.
@MJ100k
@MJ100k 2 жыл бұрын
If you can’t diagnose the more common problems that can cause a vehicle not to start… it’s probably better not to mess with the ECU. It’s a little hard to diagnose.. cause you have to test at the ECUs connector for voltage, ground and CAN bus signals. The connectors are delicate so most OEM are gonna want you to use there form of testing at that connector. Every OEM has their own way of testing.. They may recommend using a break out box. Which is a tool that will go in between the ECUs connector and the ECU.. It will monitor for voltage and ground at the pins without damaging them.

@@Drewski009 I see- well since a new battery gave you the same results, it’s probably not the battery. Sounds like something is locked up. If I were you I’d take off the S belt. Then see if all your accessories will spin by hand… ie alternator, ac compressor, etc. I’ve seen a situation where a cars AC compressor was broken so bad the pulley wouldn’t spin. So it kept the car from starting. If you take off the belt and all the accessories spin freely… You’ll have to see if the engine itself will spin freely. You’ll have to put a breaker bar (or 1/2 ratchet) on the crankshaft pulley bolt and see if the engine will turn over by hand. If the engine will not turn over by hand.. Then engine is most likely damaged internally ie locked up. Have a mechanic look at the vehicle to make sure. Good luck 👍

(Very unlikely) if I were you I’d double check to make sure the timing marks line up the way they are supposed to. You can also do a compression test to see if the timing is ok. Can you please clarify “ trouble starting” Does it crank at all, crank slowly and then start, crank fast and then start. does it not start at all or something else I didn’t mention. IIn general I would start with making sure the battery is ok. Make sure the battery connectors are making solid contact with the battery, ie they are not loose or covered with green corrosion. . Once that’s ok, Then check the battery with a battery tester. Use one that can put a load on the battery. They sell them at harbor freight for like 20$ If you don’t wanna buy one, you can have a friend try and jump your car to see if the trouble starting concern goes away, let your friends car run for a few minutes with the jumper cables hooked up and your car is off. If it starts fine after that. charge or replace your battery. If not you gotta diag some more. Let me know what happens 👍.

For a car to start you need the following Fuel, spark, compression, timing and security clearance Fuel - to check for pressure you’ll need a fuel pressure tester… But it sounds like you have fuel pressure… You can verify a fuel issuewith alittle starter fluid like I did. If the engine begins to run briefly when you spray a little starter fluid then you know you have a fuel issue. The fuel issue can be either pressure or signal. You most likely have pressure - since you’ve replaced the fuel pump. To make 100% sure you’d need a fuel pressure tester. You also need the signal from the ECU to turn the fuel injectors off and on. The ECU is only gonna give the signal if you get security clearance. You need the right key with the battery working inside the key. You can try changing the battery in the key fob, or using a different key fob if you have a spare. Usually a security light will flash on the dash when you try to start it if there is an issue with security. To diagnose that system further you’d need a scan tool than can read Body codes. Most inexpensive scan tools only read P (power train) codes however. To verify the fuel injector(s) are getting the signal from the ECU. You can buy an inexpensive fuel injector noid light kit. The sell them at harbor freight. To use it remove a fuel injector connector and put the right size noid light on the connector. Have someone crank the car and see if the light comes on and off. If it comes on and off that’s good… that means the car has security clearance and the ECU is signaling the injector. If the light doesn’t come on and off.. then either the security clearance isn’t working or the ECU or wiring from the ECU is bad. Also- I looked online, and it looks like your car has a timing belt. Make sure the belt isn’t broken. If you take off the plastic cover in the front of the engine you can see the belt. A broken timing belt will cause the car not to have compression and it won’t start. Let us know what you find 👍💯

I replaced my fuel pump was great. Changed plugs then sounded like vacuum leak. Took off plenum put it back on and now my car won't start but cranks. How can I diagnose my fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail going into upper intake
@MJ100k
@MJ100k 2 жыл бұрын
You’ll have to look up the procedure for testing the fuel pressure regulator for your specific car. Some of them will need a vacuum gauge to test and some a scan tool and a digital multi meter. I’m thinking that if it started before you took off the intake manifold … and it doesn’t start after you took off the intake manifold … then you may have put something back together incorrectly. If I were you I’d find the OEM procedure for installing the intake manifold and follow it. But First make sure you put back all the vacuum lines in the right places. Replace any the are damaged. That may be where your vacuum leak came from. If it still doesn’t start after that …..Remember- For some OEMs they want you to replace any intake manifold gaskets whenever they are removed. So if it were me I’d replace all gaskets for the intake manifold…. Torque all the bolts with a torque wrench using the OEM torque pattern….and make sure everything is put back together correctly. Good luck 👍

@@baddestebony3504 Hmmmm. Did you test to make sure power goes to the fuel pump when you turn the key and try to start the car? (like I did in the video) If there is no power to the fuel pump when turning the key… either the security system disabled that circuit or there is an issue with the circuit itself. You can try and see if there is a fuel pump fuse or relay.. or broken wire somewhere or bad pin fit at a connector somewhere… So you’d have to try and find the wiring diagram if possible… If you’re familiar with electrical diagnostics. If you’re not then I wouldn’t mess with it beyond checking the fuse and relay. Also, is your keyfob ok? are you able to try a different key? Or can you make sure your keys battery is good? Make sure there isn’t a key or security flashing light on the dash when you try to start the car… If there is, it may be an issue with the key or security system… If the security system has an issue… It may not supply power to the fuel fuel pump or injectors when you try and start the car.. but it will crank the engine over… I’m not sure if (on your particular car) if the computer will disable fuel and spark…. Or just fuel. In summary: You can try using a different key, changing the battery in the keyfob.. see if they’re security light is coming on when you crank the car over. Check the fuses and relays for that circuit and if you’re able to see if power is going to the fuel pump when you try to crank it over - But if you don’t know how to do electrical diagnosis and if none of the other simple things I suggested work… you may want to take it in to Mechanic to have them check it out. I’d hate for you to keep throwing expensive parts at it… Hope that helps 👍

Thanks bro 👍 1) Check for codes - Once I had an Acura that would randomly crank no start and then start later. It was a bad coolant temp sensor. Tricking the ecu into thinking it was cold outside when it wasn’t. The ecu thinking it was cold made the fuel trim way too rich causing a no start. But don’t just replace that sensor only do it if there is a code for it or if you see the data parameters with a handheld scan tool showing the ect (coolant temp sensor) way off while it’s crank no starting ex. It says it’s -10 degrees and it not.... 2) It could be a dead spot on the fuel pump. Where did you get it? Autozone? I got new struts from there and one was bad brand new. They sell bad parts sometimes, everybody does. It’s rare but sometimes new parts can be bad out the box. But don’t just replace the fuel pump. Next time it crank no starts spray a little starting fluid in the throttle like I did. Not too much. See if it briefly starts. If it does it may be your new fuel pump. Try and test for voltage at the pump like I did if you can to prove it’s the fuel pump. But if you can’t, At least the starting fluid experiment( if it starts briefly) will narrow it down to being fuel related . If you decide replace the fuel pump again I would get one from the Toyota dealer or Napa. The dealer is usually gonna have the best quality parts but they do cost more. Hope that helps 👍

@@PhillyDee215 Sorry, I didn’t get an alert that you had replied again. You’ve got a tricky problem there. Once I had a problem like that on a ford mini van. It would cut off at random times and then start up again later. It was diagnosed as the fuel pump. I could tell because I had a DSO digital storage oscilloscope... and a non contact low amp meter. You have to either use a tool called a fuse buddy, or create a wire that acts like a bridge between the two terminals of the fuse for the fuel pump. This way you can clamp your non contact low amp probe around the wire. The non contact amp probe is hooked Up to the DSO.... Then the DSO will display a live graph that represents the amperage going to the fuel pump. I could tell by the shape of the graph that the fuel pump was bad. At first the shape was normal study humps.... but as the fuel pump heated up you could see the graph get all crazy. I was lucky because the glitch happened in the shop while I was looking at the DSO scope. IDK if you have a DSO or a low amp probe or if you can catch the glitch without the vehicle actually running.... but that technique worked for me in the past. If you’re right about it being a crank sensor glitch... If you have a powerful scan tool you can set it up to monitor that sensor (and others) and you can try to catch which one glitches out while you’re driving. Well I hope that helps....Intermittent problems are hard to catch sometimes.. Let us know what you find ! 👍

Wow - Quite the pickle 🤔🤔 Question ? Did you have to make any alterations to the harness or sensors when you put the new engine in? Question ? Why did you replace the engine to engine with, how did you diagnose the issue? was the ECU working then? What I would do…. First I would try using another scan tool just to make sure your scan tool isn’t the issue. Next I would do a visual inspection to make sure you didn’t damage any wires when you put the new engine in…. If those things are OK I would suspect the ECU itself. I would send it to a service that fixes ECUs… I found this one from a quick Google search but I’ve never used them. www.ecudoctors.com/pages/how-we-do-it They will diagnose to see if the ECU is bad. If the ECU is bad.. ask them exactly what went bad.. like specifically what pin or driver went out… If the ECU is the issue and they fix it and send it back to you.. I would try to see if the circuit on the damaged ECU pin is ok before installing the fixed ECU… My concern is that some issue in the harness damaged the ECU so if there is an issue you must fix it before you instal the fixed ECU or it will damage it again. Whatever ECU service you decide to use.. talk to them first to let them know the situation and maybe they can assist with the repair. Good luck 👍 Let use know what fixes it 🛠️

If it starts with starter fluid. Then it’s confirmed you have a fuel issue. The starter fluid only simulates fuel. Next thing I would do is confirm the fuel pump is getting the power and good ground to start when the key is turned. If the power and ground to the fuel pump is good I would replace the fuel pump. If the power to the fuel pump is not there when you turn the key you’ll have to find out what part of the circuit is a fault. It could be a relay, fuse or wiring.

@@vinniyahberry534 Ok - well there are several ways to test the fuel pump… But since you’re trying to test it yourself… I’m assuming you don’t have alot of tools…. So we’ll go low tech testing here: 1 - Sometimes fuel pumps will start and run, but as they get hot they will then shut off. However- sometimes this can also happen if your coolant temperature sensor (or its circuit) has a problem. Basically the car thinks the engine is cold but, once it warms up, it’s actually not. This can trick the cars computer into adding too much fuel once the car warms up. So anyways, you need to see if your cars check engine light is on. It’s supposed to come on for a few seconds when you first start the car - that’s ok If it stays on when your driving - that’s bad. … if it stays on when you’re driving - see if you can borrow someone’s code reader and read the codes. If you see any coolant temp sensor codes.. I would try and fix those first… Maybe the sensor is bad or the wiring to the sensor is bad. If the sensor is easy to get to and the wiring looks ok.. You can throw a new sensor in and see if that helps. If it’s hard to get to then you may want to take it to a mechanic. 1 - If you don’t have a check engine light on- Try this - Once the car will crank but won’t start… Have a friend try and start the car- while you take a rubber hammer, hit the fuel tank from under the vehicle while your friend is trying to start the car. Dont hit it TOO hard, just a few good bops… If it starts then, it probably the fuel pump. 2 - another low tech testing method is - once the car will crank but not start- try and prime the pump a few times before starting it… Fuel pumps have a check valve in them that holds pressure in the lines when you let the car sit overnight. As they age sometimes this check valve fails. If the check valve fails you’ll have to replace the entire pump.. It can lead to fuel pressure being lost in the lines. Anyways the way to prime up pressure in the lines is as follows: put your key in the ignition… turn it to on (ie the lights in the dash come on…. But you’re not actually starting the car… then turn it back to off… then back to on… then back to off….. Do this 5 or 6 times- not to fast-try and let the pressure build up about 5 seconds when it’s in the on position… When you turn it to on that it when the fuel pump should turn on briefly to build up pressure. When you do this several times it builds up pressure in the fuel lines that may have been lost if you have a bad check valve…… If your car starts up after you’ve primed it 5 or 6 times …. Then your fuel pump is most likely the cause. 3- the third low tech option to test for the fuel pump is what I did in this video with the starter fluid. Just watch what I did… and don’t spray a lot. Just a couple puffs if enough. If you go overboard and spray too much you could cause your intake manifold to blow up. Also don’t just try to crank the car over a million times when trying to figure this problem out either. This guy I worked with did that in the shop once and blew up the plastic intake on a Chevy once. Also, just remember the starter fluid test is a test for fuel…. If your cars engine isn’t getting fuel it will briefly start with starter fluid. It’s usually the fuel pump if that happens but not 100% of the time more like 98% of the time. You could have some bad wiring going to the fuel pump as well. But since I’m assuming you don’t have tools… this test will be as good as you can do for now. Anyways hopefully that helps- be careful and let me know if you have any questions. Good luck 👍

@@MJ100k YOU ARE AWESOME! I will go try now to prime it a couple of times I did briefly do this before but not 5 or 6 times and I really only let it come on (lights on and stuff) then tried to start but I will try that first because I currently don’t have anyone who can help with the other things I will try my neighborhood mechanic tell him what a PROFESSIONAL lol said to try and see if he can help because everyone I knew who could fix cars are all acting like I have a the most foreign car they’ve ever seen and I’m honestly not too car shy but I’ve only ever fixed more American simple things.. I will definitely let you know how things go either way! I didn’t expect a reply so quickly or at all honestly so thank you so much! If I may ask.. where are you located? Because I seen an earlier comment that said they would fly you out and I literally would at this point! A ticket and paying you and for part would still probably be my best cheapest bet than taking it to the actual dealership and I don’t actually own the car yet the owner is driving a Tesla and being a “duck” about getting it fixed because his car doesn’t even need to start lol but again THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! Just become a national mechanic traveling state to state to help people lol charge for travel and stay lol or start a mechanics for dummy’s Channel your knowledge is worth BILLIONS!

Next time you go to start it try this- Turn the key to engine on key off (like when your dash lights and radio come on but you haven’t actually started the car yet) and hold it there for five seconds..do that 3 or 4 times. This is priming the fuel pump and building pressure in the lines…. If it starts easily when you prime it and barely starts other times when you don’t prime it…… that’s a clue that maybe the check valve in your fuel pump is weak and you need to replace the fuel pump. Fuel pumps have a valve in them that holds pressure in the fuel system when the cars is not running. So if priming the system makes it easy to start then it’s a clue that the fuel pump needs to be replaced. If you replace the fuel pump try and replace the filter too. Hope that helps. Let us know what finally fixes it !

Be careful ! 👍 Don’t just replace the fuel pump just because it’s cranking but not starting like mine. Other bad parts could cause the same condition. You have to go through the process of elimination and test lIke I did. If you don’t think you can do those test safely then take it to a mechanic.

I just change the fuel pump on my 1998 GS400. The vehicle was driving fine for the last couple days now and wouldn't start again. It shut down during the driving

I would try to confirm it’s a fuel issue with the starting fluid first. If it is maybe the fuel filter or maybe there was an issue where you didn’t install the fuel pump correctly.

@@MJ100k No the mechanic didn't change the fuel filter. I asked him why he didn't. Are you referring to the fuel filter underneath the vehicle? Is that the location of the fuel filter? I really appreciate you for responding

Usually I agree with that statement... But, Since I didn’t have a lift and it was a very old and rusty car, I decided not to change the fuel filter. With old rusty cars I don’t risk changing anything that I don’t have to. Changing a rusty fuel filter may have caused damage to the fuel lines... then that opens a can of worms that may not even have been necessary. If the car had started and not ran just right... then I would’ve tried to change the fuel filter. Thanks for your comment 👍
