How to fix a Minn Kota Terrova steering housing assembly for $2

In this video I replace the liner output tube on a Minn Kota Terrova with lift assist. It broke in some big waves out on Devil's Lake North Dakota.

Great video. I don't mind having to buy/replace a cheap plastic part (I've come to expect it from disposable products today). But what Minn Kota makes you do, to replace something as cheap as that steering collar, is nauseating. Once you have that head off, you've home free. It's getting to that point that's disgusting. Minn Kota has been doing this long enough to know what kind of stress is put on those pieces. Yet, they still made it from the cheapest plastic they could find. At the price they're charging for these TM's that's unforgivable. GREAT video, though. Guys like you are a God-send to us DIYer's that aren't yet familiar with products like this.

Amen....but, wait till you see what's involved in getting that box off the TM. What Minn Kota did with how they engineered this product, and the cheap plastic they used is beyond shameless. They know better....especially, at what these units cost today.

That's the easy part. Getting the shaft out with the Terrova spring loaded lift assist and getting that back together is almost impossible. Did it once and within a couple of months the collar was broke again. The problem lies in that when you hit something, like a stump, in autopilot it turns to correct its direction and breaks that collar. Not a good design at all. I find that it works fine with just the friction weight of the motor on the collar even if its broken,

Great video on disassembly of the shaft and the steering gear box. I just broke mine and order 5 of them so I have them on hand and also if they ever get discontinued

Another good one....Lots of important tips. here!! I stripped out one of those same SS 8-32 x 2.0 long screws as well and had to slot the head with a Dremel tool. My screws had a type of Loctite on them and I think that caused the problems that we both experienced. I cleaned the holes out with a 8/32 tap just to be safe and used the Purple Loctite (low strength) to reassemble. I also regressed all the gears in the steering assembly. Thanks' again for making the whole job much easier.

My plastic piece is busted up almost exactly like yours but steering seems to be working ok? I don't see the need to replace yet. Was your steering disabled or did you just want to replace the busted part? Great video.

Amen... I'm on here for the same reason everyone else did, and my is brand new. It's beyond shameless that Minn Kota is making parts on their motors so inaccessible, that break so effortlessly. I'll get to know how to maintain this TM, because I have to...but, this is the last Minn Kota I buy, that's for sure. Getting that steering box off the TM is absolutely nauseating. That's the part he doesn't show. *But, yes, shame on Minn Kota for using plastic THAT f**king cheap. They know better.*

Put 12 volts on it while on bench to check the motor and gears are synchronized

Great video. This piece just broke on my husbands trolling motor. Would it affect your assist deploy because it is now difficult to get the trolling motor to release and deploy?

No. The head is the easy part. The hardest part is the lift assist spring. Watch my video and wear gloves when handling the spring.

There’s tool you can buy for taking the spring. It’s a thin bar with a stud on it.

Usually the motor is turning 1 way and you hit something. My boat is a magnet for hidden trees or shallow shoals.
