How to replace a Minn Kota Terrova steering housing assembly

In this video I replace my Minn Kota Terrova complete gear box. I include all the tips and tricks I learned along the way to make it simpler for you. I hope this helps you with fixing your trolling motor.

Great job on this video!!! I just replaced the steering box on my Terrova. Your procedure for the replacement was spot on. Watching your video saved me some heartache with the lift assist spring. You were so right about the strength of that spring!! It's awkward to handle but your idea of taping a file to the spring worked like a charm. The total time to make the repair was less than 2 hours. Thanks for putting this video on KZbin so guys like myself can make their own repairs and save a little money. Now to get back, on the water...

Great work....I used needle nose vise grips padded with cardboard to secure the lift spring before removing from housing that way I did not have to worry about the spring going into the reel. Thanks for the help!!

Thanks for the video!! Just tore my 112 Terrova apart tonight. Going to install a complete steering box tomorrow, and I also got a rebuild kit to redo the old box. That spring,,,, geeeeezzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!! I got my parts thru Trolling Motor Parts, new steering box was $137.95 I believe, rebuild kit was like $44.95. Hopefully set after this. Thanks again!!!!

I just finished replacing my steering module and used your video as a guide. Thanks, and that spring loaded assist IS a pain, for sure. As I reassembled, I pulled out about 18" of the flat steel out and it sprang into a slinky shape on me. I almost couldn't get the screw back in the sleeve because it was all bound up in my hands. Be careful with that step.

14:00 I found it way easier to just tap the shaft with a punch and that nut slides right off.

Put spring on by pulling just enough to come true drive box push shaft up so the spring attach points are closer.

Great Video, I need to replace my lift assist. I have noticed my Terrova has something yours does not. And I cannot even see it on the parts schematics..... between the connecting collar for the lift assist and the steering box there is a plastic sleeve that is on the shaft and around the metal strip for the lift assist. I find it odd, I cannot find it on anyone elses videos, I have looked at the bottom of the steering box and it is not from there. Maybe just a part they decided they no longer need to put on the Terrova's?

Reason IAW minnkota is if any other part in steering box is worn can cause a draw on circuit board and it will need replaced.

Just need to figure out where to buy that assembly from. I know Minn Kota sells parts, but I'm not sure if there are distributors of their parts that sell them for less. Good job I have same issue. Minnkota says lower shaft into steering box Never drop it starts chipping the locking ring.

Mine happened while in 5 foot waves. The motor came out of the water and pushed up and then came slamming down on the plastic collar. I would of headed in earlier, but we were slamming the walleyes on Devil's Lake.

Glad there's finally a couple of videos on how to do this. After the 3rd time breaking the collar I finally had the nerve to fix it myself after watching your video. Thanks! Hi Chad, Thank you for your video. I had just received my Minn Kota Terova back from the dealer In Australia who replaced the complete steering assembly. The replacement steering assembly cost me AU$560.00 and the labour to replace it cost me AU$200.00. (Total AU$760.00) I was told by the dealer that the fault was caused by "salt water" intrusion. The dealer neglected to tell me the steering assembly could be repaired. The Terrova was 2 & 1/2 years old and had not done a large amount of hours. I have obtained my old steering assembly from the dealer and was shocked to find it only needed a 36v motor and a Terrova steering housing repair kit. The replacement parts in Australia cost a fortune in comparison to what is charged USA. Can you please advise me the name of a USA dealer who I could obtain the parts. ? Thanks Bill

My unit keeps making a grinding noise when it goes side to side or when it's on spot lock. I thought maybe I just had to lube the shaft, but that hasn't help. Any suggestions? Thanks

Why didny you just replace the sterring bushing instrad of the whole unit? The cost is under 5 dollars
