Not long ago, our 2006 Scion XB started hesitating on the acceleration. It got a little worse over the next few weeks, and we thought that since the XB had 153,000 miles on it and the original spark plugs were still in the engine that it might be time to change them. About a week after discussing this, we were about two hours from home attending a funeral. Luckily, I had lived in that town before and had lots of family there. The first night, the Scion just started idling really bad and it sounded like an old pulpwood truck when it ran. There was a bit of a smell, and we decided we had better change those plugs. We took it to OReilly's and a clerk hooked up their computer. It said I had a misfire in cylinder two. We decided to replace all plugs, but nothing improved. We brought it back later that day so their manager could look at it. All the while we thought it could be a bad cylinder, coil, or heaven forbid, a bad valve. The manager called a friend of his who is a mechanic. He took the plug out of cylinder two and placed it on the block and had us crank the engine. It did not spark. He looked at me and said, "You're in luck. It is just a bad coil." He confirmed it by moving the coil from cylinder one to cylinder two and had us crank the engine again. It fired. I bought a new coil, which cost me about 100 dollars, and he switched it in two minutes and charged me nothing. Lucky me! Instantly, the Scion cranked up normally, and she is running so smoothly that you can hardly hear the engine run when it is cranked. These are great vehicles!

Nice Vid. FYI Anyone using this as an instructional vid. Most plugs don't come gapped unless they say so like on iridium or platinum plus4. I found a few auto parts stores say to gap at .044 which is incorrect, seems like their goto gap... not believing this was corrected I called back and asked for the gap of the plugs in my truck and they said .044 so don't listen to them. The Toyo 1.5 gets a .032 to .034 spark gap for the standard plugs that are adjustable. Even says so in the owners manual.

Wow! Freaking awesome. This really, really helped! Tried the screw driver thing, but can't hear anything. Plus this way you can actually pinpoint two possible problems at once. Very good! Thanks for sharing.
@mattrockman10289 жыл бұрын
You also use a long screw driver as a sort of stethoscope to hear the plugs instead of unplugging them and letting gas exit to your cat. This also works on injectors. Listen for the pulses.
@berkleygreg9 жыл бұрын
Matt Rockman Do I place the screw driver on top of the coil or near it? Could you elaborate a little more on this technique? Do i just place my ear to the handle?
@mattrockman10289 жыл бұрын
Greg Berkley yup. You just place the flat end of the screw driver on top or on the side right above the motor and put your ear firmly on the handle end

50-60% of 1st gen xb owners around here are in the 50-65 year old range. Im 30 and have a 06 xb and im the odd one out. But I love mine, great small family car. Much rather have the spacey xb then a civic, cobolt, corolla ect. For a box, it gets good mpg's. Mine is at 98k...so it is time to get to the plugs, wires, coils, waterpump and fluid/belt changes!

I'm about to turn 60 and just discovered the beauty of the 1st gen XB...about to buy an RS 3.0. Crazy green yeah but I like it's potential as a collector car. And I think maybe a lot of my gen enjoys being outside the box...plus like me have maybe owned VWs when we were young...I had 3 buses and 2 bugs. It's basically a modern day VW hippy machine.

Are you supposed to be changing spark plugs and coil packs with the engine running? That seems dangerous
@saabtech35106 жыл бұрын
Scan tools are now very inexpensive. Will tell you which cylinder is misfiring. Then you can swap coils with the car OFF to see if the misfire moves to the cylinder where you put the suspect coil. It's the best way to isolate the problem. Pulling coils off with the car running is a good way to cause other electrical part failures or zap yourself.

Just finished correcting this exact problem with my 05 xB. Now I'm at the computer trying to find out how to reset the SCV, Track off, and check engine lights as they came on the exact second the ignition coil went out. Any info on this? Great video by the way! Wish I would have seen it last Friday when the issue began.

Take it to OReilly's, and ask whoever is on duty to hook up their computer to your XB and clear the code. They will know what you are talking about. Explain what happened, and ask them to clear it. This just happened to us, and they did the same thing for us.
@TheWilferch2 жыл бұрын
@@democrat102 ...some states will not allow places like OReilly's to do that...as erasing codes may erase emissions related codes too. Get your own OBDII scanner/reader/eraser......$35 for some good brand.

Did you chk the "thermostat"? & the water_pump, feel the top-Raditor-Hose, & bottom rad_Hose, both should be hot, if not, then you have a STUCK THERMOSTAT! Or no Circulation of Coolant, ck water-pump, see if its working properly, on one Note remember this should be exactly like the "OEM",,!
