Yes, had to get both front callipers on my NC refurbed - common problem on the MX-5 it seems!

Will be interesting to see how well the discs come up after a few miles!

Getting that retaining spring back in at the end can be one of the most frustrating parts of these types of caliper systems. I found it easy to get the bottom one partially seated first then with mole grips or vice grips swing the top one in and gently tap home with a rubber mallet or base of a screwdriver

"how to fix a seized caliper" How does this have 73 likes? You just removed the caliper and disc and then refitted.. You didn't even check the slides clean or re lube??? Hilarious 😂

How to change lol. Why not check all other avenues first? Air in the system/leaky lines, cruddy pins. Always check the cheapest solutions first and if that doesn't fix it you you know you haven't wasted money and done the right thing. Not to mention if you know how to fit a new caliper you should now how to maintain/repair one. I've had cars that have never needed new calipers in my whole ownership just due to checking and periodic maintenance when it's off the ground. I got fooled very early in my driving days to buy new discuss pads n calipers "as it was wiser to do it all at the same time" ok the pads were bad but the issue was a perished brake line I found out in a few weeks. After that day I learned to check things and maintain as much I can myself.

Watching this because my calipers are seized too on the 1.6tdi Bluemotion tech. Was adjusting the handbrake and realised when I checked for any binding the wheel is really stiff when the cable ifs fully slack. Couple taps with a bit of wood and hammer on the caliper and its free but when you use the break again its back to normal so it seems suck. I am interested on the mpg when i get this sorted as of now i did a 300mile motorway journey at 74mpg so with free calipers maybe an improvement on top of that.

Thanks for another inspirational video. I was very worried when you sold the MX5 but I needn't have been, plenty to watch and enjoy.

You forgot the main thing - to clean the slider pins and lube them with silicone grease, most of the time they are the main culprit of the problem. I would've replaced discs as well with them being in that condition tbh.

My front Caliper is stuck cannot drive it squeeks so loud at snail pace . Hoping it's the slide pins .

Chances are they're warped anyway if it's sticking not to mention worn out

I've got a peugeot 5008 HDI with 251000 Miles ,yes ,miles and no issues.never had to change a clutch turbo or anything...the engine is bullet proof. And have a vw Sharan tdi 2.0 had some issues with callipers, and vibrations etc... at this moment the PSA Group is more reliable than VW definitely

Do not go near anything like that with an angle grinder this is precision engineering hire the correct disc resurfacing tool that bolts onto the car or take them to a shop that has a big enough lathe the surface must be perfectly flat and even unless you want vibration through your pedal, mad noises and uneven wear on pads my friend but apart from that well done keep up he good diy vids 😂

Hello, great video, I've got a sticking caliper on my Tiguan (disc is heating up) is there anything I can do, or anything I can spray onto the calliper that may free it up. ? Thanks.

Piston is seized. Push it out. Sand around the tip of the piston with ~1200grit...

Short of skimming those discs their only fit for the bin so badly pitted

VOSA rules on pitted brake discs changed in 2010, as long as it is not classed as ‘excessive’, and it does not affect braking performance, it’s a pass and advise. As you can see from the cars MOT history, it’s never had an advisory for discs, and I can assure you that braking performance is not affected 👍

Forgot to clean and lub all caliper sliding surfaces and pins.

Didn’t forget, they worked fine. Seals were all intact, no ingress of dirt 👍 🦭

@@CarThought no you actually have to pull them out, clean the old grease out and add new grease. the caliper needs to 'float' effortlessly on the pins. thats what actually allows to the caliper to grab the rotor no matter what the wear state of the pads. if the pins are not lubed sufficiently the caliper will grab the rotor during breaking as it has a very high amount of force but when you let off the brake it kinda gets stuck to one side so the pad will ride on the rotor. if the pins are lubed the caliper will release and lightly 'back off' from the rotor and it wont drag.

@@agentjwa thanks, I do understand how a sliding caliper works.

@@CarThought cool man, I've just run into so many cars diagnosed with "blown calipers" that turned out to be stuck pins. It's like brake techs at service shops don't even understand how the brakes work
