Same mower but Briggs & Stratton 20hp motor. Will not start. Spins 1 turn then half turn then backfires. Changed starter/oil and oil filter. Changing spark plug this afternoon but old spark plug looks good. I’m at a lost and my dad who passed away some time ago brought it for me as a house warming gift so it has sentimental value and I can’t let it go that easy. Had to replace rear end because it was stuck in reverse no matter if shifter was in forward or neutral. Thanks for seeing this and providing any insight that you can sir. W. Madyun US Navy

I've watched a few videos on this seize problem and I can tell you I'm going to have to knock my exhaust valve guide back in too. I think you should have knocked it in more on this one. A deep well socket and a good hammer should do it without cracking anything. Mine isn't sticking out as much as this one is but I think that is why mine is seizing up a bit. Mine will start then after shut off it locks up again. I will be working on it soon. Great videos. I enjoyed all 3 of them.

That Craftsman was worth saving. Always keep and eye on those bolts from the crankcase they have a tendency to come loses and the case could develop cracks. Thanks for the three videos.

Good job on the repair. Persistence overcomes resistance. But the idea that this Kohler engine has a plastic camshaft is pretty scary. Yikes 😳😳😳😳😳🤦🏾‍♂️🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴

My guess is it overheated and they shut it off. So before they blew the head gasket. Now would be the proper time to recheck the head bolt torque. Some might be way low.

I used to use the rope trick on my Cesnna 172 that would get stuck exhaust valves during the South texas summers. Thanks for the video. PS, how long did it take in total because I have a recent model 19.5 540 that currently has the same problem?

Yes Sir, nice job on diagnostics on that. I got cub gt2542 Thursday evening about 45 minutes from me these richer a lot better off than me family giving away . It has new battery, looks like new starter it's real clean . Oil level is little low and it's stuck, locked broke something. I'm tear into it today if not monsoon again past 2 dayas been wet . It's 20hp horizontal shaft. Kohler engine. Two questions for ya. First when you turn key on it clunks starter not when do to start either first position on switch like it's wired wrong. Tried jump wire back starter got starter spin once bindex didn't kick in every other time clunk . Second will a predator harbor freight motor swap in never fooled with one both side shaft stub pto ele clutch side then drive shaft side looks to be front of motor but I'm not sure. It's flywheel side because starter gear on that side. I mean I guess doesn't matter car engine has working shaft both sides acc drive uses little hp operate. So understand just never fooled with any small engine has double side working. Just 3-10 hp . Tillers, gocarts, pressure washer, lawnmower. Usual things. Thanks nice job on that wright off mower. Thanks for the note. Can you turn the engine by hand? I guess your first step will be to verify if there are broken components inside. If so, these kohler courage engines aren't worth very much, and are prone to many problems. I'd recommend a replacement. Good luck.
