The mouse nest was the problem. The motor overheated and caused the damage. Take care of the motor and this won't happen.

Great job! Just replaced my exhaust cam gear with a new gear and ACR assembly because the starter hangs up and won’t crank at TDC. I didn’t find anything wrong with the lifter or ACR on the exhaust cam. The Starter bendix still sticks on flywheel when engine is at TDC. Also had to get an aftermarket valve cover with the supporting steel bolt plate on the bottom of the valve cover to get it to stop leaking even with a new gasket. Just couldn’t get that original valve cover to stop leaking.

I use the rope trick on some cars when I do a timing belt job and have to loosen the crankshaft pulley. Works great, for loosening and tightening. Of course one has to line the piston just right.

If people are interested in small engines, this particular Kohler Courage is a dog. Kohler has good solid engines, just not the Courage. Lots of issues you can read about online. Peening the valve guide may work, but is sometimes not a permanent fix.

Omg that was so hard to do! I admire how you fixed this! I repair engines but a job like this seems difficult! How much did you end up charging? How did you learn to fix that type of issues?

👍👍 I bought this mower (cheap) to fix and flip. Didn't cost much to fix but took a few hours to do. I'm more in buying, fixing, and selling but my rate is $35/hr CDN or $25us/hr

You have some serious experience with these Kohlers. Wish I could get you to see mine an SV740 twin 27HP. Don't think the model or make makes any difference. It seems the crankshaft has seized where the bushing is. Was thinking of tipping it upside down and applying an oxy flame to warm the pan and the shaft...bad idea?

Is the motor is seized up? Can turn motor with your hands. Try to wiggle it back and forth (Fan shroud). Heat won’t help. You’ll melt the oil seal. Take the valve covers off and take a look at the pushrods. Are they bent? Popped off?

@WeekendHobbyMechanic Totally seized. tried to apply a breaker bar to turn the flywheel. ..Nothing. It's not the clutch. I remember hot ambers of grass coming from the base of the engine when it seized. Think the shaft seized on the bearingless and bushingless oil pan at the base. Seems all Kohlers just have the hole in the oil pan to act as a bushing. Maybe applying heat with a propane torch (oxy too hot) may help but on a forum I read that putting it in a 300c oven is a perfect unseizing option...if you have such an oven. Disappointed in the quality and repairability of Kohlers. Not made to be repaired

You can start looking around for a used motor on facebook marketplace, Craig’s list or kijiji. One will pop for sale soon.

how do you remove the crank from one of them?
@WeekendHobbyMechanic5 ай бұрын
If you remove the bottom PTO pulley & undo the connecting rod from the crank, it will come out from the top.
