God bless you. There’s never a good time to change a flat and your video saved the day.

Thanks bro. Getting my 9 year old spare tire replaced and your video helped. Also my factory tire iron doesn’t fit the factory chrome lug nuts. 2015 f150 only owner.

Great video! Thanks! On my 2007 F150 today I could not get the key to turn so I got at it from behind (various videos on KZbin about how to easily remove the lock from behind) and just trying to remove my c clip from behind knocked the corrosion of the back end of the "tumbler" free and my key turned freely then. Needless to say the c clip disintegrated. I know the lock is useless if someone really wants the full-sized spare tire (easily sold on online marketplaces) but I took the whole assembly apart and cleaned up the key tumbler (it is aluminum allow and the rock salt likely led to the corrosion of the rear of the tumbler) along with the U shaped part that clips on with the c clip (both made of steel) on my wire wheel on my bench grinder then soaked the U shaped part in some phosphoric acid that I keep around after cleaning small rusted parts and used a q tip and dabbed a little phosphoric acid on the aluminum casing of the tumbler then after it foamed I wiped it clean with a wet paper towel and then removed the U shaped part from soaking and rinsed it with water and let it all dry then masked off the chrome face (where key inserts) and hit everthing with black "professional enamel" Rustoleam spray paint. Tomorrow when it is all dried I will take it to the hardware store and get a new c clip (hopefully stainless steel) and then I will squirt some graphite into the key slot and then reinstall it in bumper and then coat the back end liberally with some waterproof waxy grease to keep it from corroding which the factory should have done to solve the whole issue. Hope this option and description helps as well!

Definitely saved a tow this morning by figuring this out

Wrong key! It’s the key that goes into the glovebox. It’s a separate key. It’s NOT the ignition key.

Nope it’s definitely the ignition key. There isn’t a second key

@@theguyofalltrades That’s weird, It’s the glove box key that opens the spare tire lock. However, I do have a push button start. I do have a key inside my key fob, but that’s the only other key that I have. Either way, I couldn’t figure out how to get the lock back in once I was done. After watching your video, I realized I was putting it in upside down. Thanks for making the video.

🤔 nah. No lubricant is necessary. Just pry everything apart with pliers and a screwdriver. The only 2 tools needed to work on vehicles

so you are saying the lock is worthless because you can remove it with a flathead screwdriver and a hammer?

Yup pretty much lol

Now I know how all of the tweakers still can grab spare tires. It’s a shame how they could do that shit so fast compared to the honest mechanic.

Crazy right! I was almost sure I would need to get towed to fix my flat. Crazy how easy that lock came off and I did that one handed while filming in like a minute lol

I agree but it beats storing the tire in the bed of the truck. My dads old Silverado was the same way but we had to cut the cable to get the spare out it was rusted so bad.

The lug nuts are two piece and the outer cover swells. Common issue on the F150s
