HOW TO REMOVE WHEEL LOCKS WITHOUT A KEY TOOL
Hey guys, if you buy a car with no wheel lock tool or you lost yours here is a video that will help you to remove the wheel lock without the tool and be able to remove your wheels. This procedure will work on most wheel locks. In order to remove the wheel lock you will need a good quality 12 point socket that is a little bit smaller than the wheel locks.
Please do not use that to steal somebody's wheels!
You probably do not want yours stolen either.

This worked great! It cost me $45 in tools, but the repair shop wanted $80 to remove these on my newly purchased used car. So still saved $ and got tools to keep. A couple of tips. I had to use a 13/16 socket. 19mm was too small and 22 too large. Also, the worst part was getting the acorns out of the socket. I ended up tightening them hand tight on the wheel stud and gingerly tapping them, one direction and then another to hopefully prevent bending or damaging the stud. Worked great. Wish I hadn't wasted half hour banging on that pesky screw!

Dealership installed the locks with too much torque. I broke the key trying to get them off. The key stripped out and broke. Now I have to remove the security lugnut without a key. This helped out a ton and saved me $$ trying to replace the broken key. Thank you!

Use a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone to reduce the friction. It should help.

Yes. Most thieves will do this if you don’t. All professional thieves carry an assortment of locking lug nut tools.

Dear. This is permanantly perfect way! I did my 4 nuts this way. And now I can easily check wheel related things. So thank you. One thing I want to say is I used 5kg dumbel instead of hammer. Exact aiming of hammer-especilly heavy-is pretty hard. So I did pile drive by dumbel. Little motion,but exact and enough power.

Been using this method for years. Really effective for straight sided lock nuts. There are other nuts with a rotating collar, those are fun lol. There has never been a locknut stop me in my life

Thanks for the tip guys! I misplaced my key for my Ram 1500 that had Mopar locking lug nuts. They are the ones that have a rotating sleeve on them. Some people mentioned here that this technic not going to work with this kind of nuts. First I used a slight smaller socket like they showed(I think 1"). It destroyed the sleeve and made it easy to remove. Than I used a smaller socket (18 mm) than the first one and it worked!

Thank you for creating this video. Took my car for inspection, failed inspection for rear brakes. Speedy-Midas wanted $400 +. Took the car to my tire shop for repair $100; I'm not kidding. The nightmare began; the lugnut lock key wasn't in my car. I returned to Speedee to find they had kept it. It was also broken, Speedee agreed to replace it; this took over a month, I'm not kidding. I took the lock key to my tire shop, it did not work ! Frustrated, I youtubed the fix, your video demonstration is the process I used to remove the round keyed nuts. By the way, the 'Speedee-Midas' inspector brought out a handful of various examples of 'keys' for the 'locknuts' to determine which was mine. If you don't have your 'key' to remove the 'locknut' you will be in grave trouble when you have a flat or for any other purpose you may have a need to remove a wheel. I used this same method to remove all key lock nuts from my car.

I'm sure thieves already know how to remove wheel locks. I, however, bought a Camaro with wheel locks and it came without a key. I welded a nut to the lock and it came right off. This method is a lot easier and I wish I had thought of it. Great tip guys!

Many factory security lugs have minute differences in the key interface to prevent owners from stealing each others wheels (like garage door openers). You have to drive your car all the way to the dealership, scan the lug and wait for them to look up your specific lug nut key, it is then that you find out the cost and realize that you will never pay that much in a million years, just to remove your wheels. lol

I had a lock nut (circular lock) that was on my rear wheels, bought the car from a dealership at a good price but they didn’t know where the key was. Tried multiple kits for removing and couldn’t get it to work. I saw this video at dinner, dropped my spaghetti on the floor and ran to my car. Popped the trunk, grabbed my cheap Pittsburg 12 point socket set, and the 3lb hammer. Dumped it onto the lock nut and hit it with a breaker bar: and wouldn’t you believe it: it came off. Both came off easily and I instantly went to buy replacement lug nuts and changed the brake pads while able to. Thank you for this amazing trick!

I have a removal tool designed specifically for this now, but before I had one I would just tack weld a regular nut to the top of the lock nut. I realize that not everyone has access to a welder, but just thought I would throw my ashop method out there.

The bigger problem is how they were installed, if you replaced tires and/or had a brake job done at a shop. The boys doing the wrenching are going to use a pneumatic impact wrench, which will tighten it down well past normal human strength. I carry a manual impact wrench and a hammer in the trunk to help remove lug nuts that I find in this condition. A couple of solid whacks on it should loosen it.

@@stever5887 they are supposed to use a torque indicator to prevent over tightening, but I know that most dont and that they are inaccurate anyway. dont go to shit shops. an impact is ok for removing or quickly snugging up lugs, but never for final torque. a torque wrench should be used for the final torque.

I just wanted to say thanks its 10/11/19 . I was about to do a complete brake job on my 2008 honda , then I realized I didn't get a key when I purchesed the car , I watched this video at pep boys in the lug nutt àisle,back against the wall , dealer wants $1200 ,I paid $200 for parts , but no key. Just did this on my wife's Lexus in a matter of seconds once I had the right socket and tools from my tool box. Beat the socket on, used a breaker bar with a cheater pipe on the handle and it came right off. Thanks!!!

You could just screw the old socket back on a little bit and tap the hammer on the socket lightly until it loosens.

Repair shops use a special socket to do the job. This works great on rusted exhaust system bolts such as the muffler and so on. But it won't always remove a keyed wheel lock nut. Wheel keyed lock nuts are more of a deterant to an easy rip off due to a similar procedure being used.
