Do not use wooden shims. If they get wet, they can rot and then you have the problem back again. They make special PVC shims that won't rot no matter how much water they are exposed to.
@AZRockRunner2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Use the plastic from the tile leveler. I also fill the gap with grout all around. Grout is much harder than caulk. Expect more effort to remove grout if I replace the toilet but that may be someone else worry.

Just an interesting note.. installed an American Standard today (a $279 toilet).. before I installed I used a straight edge to check the flatness of the floor under the toilet and also the bottom of the toilet.. It turned out the "ribs" toward the front of the toilet protruded beyond the bottom rim of the toilet base.. and that is what caused the forward-back motion that I could sense when standing on the toilet (I stand on it to verify there is no rock) - So takeaway Tip 1 - check the toilet for flatness so you know what your working with - in my case the floor was flatter than the toilet.. I supposed you can't trust their ceramic molds to be perfect, but I would have like to have seen better. Tip 2 - I used a Danco Perfect Seal (combination rubber and wax ring) - they're amazing.. they allow you to remove/reposition toilet after initial install and also greatly reduce risk of leaking (esp after plunging), and reduce the mess too. I have not affiliation with Danco, but wanted to help you all and give them recognition of a great invention.

Better caulk that after shimming ( use plastic bowl shims). Do not caulk the back, in case there is a leak, u want to be able to see if the seal is broken ( water will be able to leak or the back). Then u can attend to a broken seal. Also, I prefer to use the new rubber seal instead of wax. U can usually reset that rubber seal if there is a leak. Less mess also.

If you had any common sense you should know NOT to use wood shims to stabilize a wobbly toilet. The wood shim will eventually shrink as the bathroom is naturally a moisture filled room .... If your gonna use shims use the plastic ones found in the plumbing section at any home improvement store ...

Pro tip: you’re gonna need to run a bead of caulk around the base or else you’ll get a sickly sweet sewer smell in your bathroom. How do I know? I did this a few months back, and my bathroom smells like a candy shop (in the worst possible way). I’m grabbing caulk to finish the job today. Here’s hoping

Replace your ring. The new rubber ones are far superior to wax. The only reason to caulk is to hide a leak from a shitty install.

Wooden shims will rot in no time. Each time you clean , mop the floor the wood will absorb water and the shims will rot. In no time. The proper fix is to secure the mounting bolts to the foundation.

Pull the toilet off the flange and simply replace the toilet bolts (they slide right into the side of flange) then put everything back and your good. Might check to see if the flange needs a couple new screws before reassembly. Hope this helps!

@MovieMakingMan Жыл бұрын
Johnny bolts and flanges are terribly designed. The fact that users have to put a backup bolt to hold it in place is one of many problems. It seems obvious that plumbing and every other industry design their products badly so DIYers will have to go buy more stuff. I watched another video by a plumber who admitted toilets could be designed so they would require almost no work to install them. But he said if they did that they’d put a lot of plumbers out of work. Virtually every area is riddled with poor designs or intentionally made to incur a lot of extra money to get what you need to complete jobs. It’s capitalism at its finest. Or another word for capitalism is exploitation and greed.
