Don't want to be a wet blanket, but if the handle is rotten, just filling the checks is not going to do much. The wood will still be soft. It might feel OK. but it is not going to be like new wood. You could get a new handle and attach the D handle to that. Of course if you're in AZ it may just be dried out.

Hi asbestosfiber, correct… they were super dry, not rotten. These short shovels are 2 of 21 tools we recently restored. Some of the 21 had rotten wood, which we replaced. Check out the 21 Shovels video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYrXd4xse5aCatU
