This was really helpful advice, but... It worked on one lawn tractor wheel, and while I thought it had also fixed another, that second 'problem tire' continued to leak, but read on, as I do seem to have fixed it and learned some things along the way that may help others. The two tires both started suffering leaks around the rim as well as from the base of the valve. Both tires are years old ... you tend not to wear out lawn tractor tires 🙂 For both I followed your (good) advice. It fixed one, but only reduced the other. Using WD40 to help not only clean, but soften and slightly swell the old rubber helping it make a better seal 'like new'. For the leaking valve/to rim seal, I used a valve thread tapping tool. I soaked the base of the valve with WD40, then inserted the tap tool until it was fully home, and then used it to turn the value slightly in the rim, i.e. break and remake the seal between valve and rim. This helped get some WD40 into the seal, and yes, it stopped this leak 🙂 For the second tire, I believed it was fixed, but a few days later I realised not. I then, and entirely coincidentally, found I had some 'Type 2 gasket sealant'. This is a non-hardening pliable 'black goo' that helps seal gaskets. I cleaned the tire seat again and then smeared on the 'black treacle', left it a few mins and refilled the tire, giving it a good pressure for 24 hours to ensure the tire really seated to the rim. Results seem good, and as the 'goo' is black, it even looks good with the black tire. Something very similar to what I used ... www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/gasket-sealants/permatex-form-a-gasket-no-2-sealant-3-oz/ Other tips I have from this... 1. Instead of immersing the wheel in a large bucket of water to find the leak(s), instead spray a mixture of water and washing up liquid on the wheel and valve. Any leaks show up as growing bubbles and fizz. Less messy that a big bucket 2. To get the tire off the rim to clean and possibly smear with gasket sealant, strike the sidewall with a hammer, working your way around. More reliable than attempting to lever with large screwdrivers if you don't have suitable tire levers, and no chance of damaging the tire seal 3. To get the tire to reseat (presuming you don't have a airline delivering buckets of air), use an electric pump and bounce the tire on the ground with the pump running. This helps shock the tire onto the rim and so seal, else you can be left with air leaking as fast as your pump can attempt to add it to the tire Hoping these lessons may be of help to others 🙂

Worked greater as a cleaner, restorer of rubber, and most importantly in my case, as a sealer of air. I hadn't thought of this so it saved me buying a $27 can of rim-bead sealer for just a couple of dolly tires. Thank you!

Thanks so much for this. My motorcycle rear tyre was losing about 4 or 5 psi in a 24 hour period. There was no puncture and the valve was ok so it had to be around the rim. I tried the WD40 and so far so good! Good man for putting this vid up and I really like the environment where you live btw. Dave. England.

How did you fix did you take wheel off leave on motorcycle have to Break the bead remove valve first?
@davidellis53122 жыл бұрын
@@brocky78 hi there I have to take this back as it only worked for a short time. I didn't take the wheel off I just rotated it while I gently sprayed at top centre. I guess WD40 is just a water repellent so we can't expect too much. I eventually changed the tyre.

Another great use for the wonder stuff WD40! I'm going to try it now. But spread the word - never use it as a fine lubricating oil. Although it looks like it, it isn't. It is a wax dissolved in a solvent. I found out to my cost when trying to lubricate my model train locomotive!

Worked like a charm for my dolly wheels. Had to wipe one down with a cloth and reseat it by pressing it down on the hub but the other sealed right up after application of wd-40.

I fixed a leaking wheelbarrow tire that wouldent stay on the rim by submerging the tire under water and fill it full of water then blow it up. Plus in the winter it froze solid and it became a run flat tire.

I’m not sure you want to risk this method on something that will be carrying you around at 40 miles per hour. Spend the $$ and get it done at a tire shop. Safety first (sometimes 😉)

This is not the best fix for long term: wd40 causes rubber to degrade and expand outwards, it will fix for short term and damage your rubber. If you have $20 bucks, get some real tire sealant and apply it as same
