Lane Isbell First, ensure VLC plays the audio stream aloud when you play your original .mkv file (if it cannot decode the audio stream, it cannot re-encode the audio stream). Once you confirm this, try compressing using a different audio format within your MP4 file (some compressors do not like converting from other compressor types).

RodneyDickson Cool videos. But, I am trying to compress .mov files recorded live on a Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio. It records on an SSD uncompressed. It puts it in a .mov. When I play the uncompressed video in QuickTime it plays with video AND audio. When I open it with VLC it won't play with sound. I tried compressing anyway with the sample rate changed to 48000 as reported by VLC. Still no good. Help?

I have the opposite problem. Audio is working perfectly fine but no video at all. Codec information shows only 1 stream - The audio stream, but no video stream. Please help

Only having an audio stream with no video stream can mean one of two things: 1) the file ONLY contains audio and never contained video, or 2) the video stream is not recognizable by VLC Media Player. If the video stream is not recognizable by VLC, you could try converting said video using this method and hopefully this will convert your video stream to something VLC recognizes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jITUeZ1-iq6VsJI

I deleted original video and after some time after i ran a video i heard i do not have an audio. I tried a few methods from then. I want to try once more to fix that. Sadly, if the only version of the video that you kept was the re-encoded one that does not have an audio track, then there is no way to recover the audio track from the re-encoded version of the video file you have. If while playing the video in VLC, you hold CTRL and press J, and it is indicated that you do in fact have an audio stream, then I guess you can try another encoder (for example kzbin.info/www/bejne/jITUeZ1-iq6VsJI ), however, if only a video stream is indicated in VLC, then I'm sorry to announce that the audio track was lost when the original video was deleted : \

Sadly the audio track might be a silent track with no actual audio recorded to it. If any of your media player softwares actually play actual audio in this video let me know, but otherwise it sounds like the audio is lost forever : \

I had the no audio issue, and it appears to have fixed it. 44100; changed to 48000. However, subtitles apparently don't work as "soft subtitles" aren't supported by the MP4 format, and the file conversion apparently picked the wrong audio track, so the movie's playing in another language, even though I know English is available, and I can't find an option to change that in VLC. Argh. Guess I need a more powerful program like Handbrake or something.

The 'scene' favours the codecs that offer the best compression to quality ratio. Presently, MKV represents this (of course, subject to change). I would argue that the best codec to select when converting said files would be the one that is supported by your media box as far as playback goes. H264 is a widely accepted standard that offers an excellent compression to quality ratio. H265 is a bit better, but is less widely supported. For a widely accepted codec that still offers a good compression to quality ratio, Xvid is a great choice. So, to sum it all up, if you have time to kill, try these codecs in order, and as soon as you find one that works, stick with that: H265, H264, Xvid. If you do not have time to waste, Xvid would be your safest choice as far as support and compatibility goes (even my NBox from a couple of years back plays Xvid)
