Nice and simple. Shim it guys I'm having to pull my toilet because it was not shimmed and so one of the bolts ended up getting sheared off. Now I have to pull the toilet, reapply a new wax ring and replace the brass bolts.

If the toilet had rocked and compressed one side of the wax ring, when you shim it back up, would it not leave a gap between the wax and toilet or flange?
@ThePlumbingGurus4 жыл бұрын
Not if there’s enough wax there. You’re usually only shimming it 1/8-1/4” at best
@randolfmacdonaldstudies Жыл бұрын
It's just better to put a new wax ring and not assume on something you can't see. A leaking wax ring can cause major damage to subfloor over time.

You suggest rubber shims as they are easier to cut than plastic. Yet you link to plastic shims on Amazon.

It’s the only ones we could find on Amazon. The hard ones work good to. They’re just harder to cut.

Um, if it's shimmed correctly and wax ring installed you shouldn't get a leak. Many places require the base to be sealed.

The issue is my floor is not flat so its rocking forward. If I shim it to stop it from moving, will not being level be a big problem ?
@ThePlumbingGurus3 жыл бұрын
I’d say it not rocking is more important. Depends on how out of level it is. Try it out and see what it feels like. Biggest thing is you don’t shim or move it around to much and break that seal

Rubber shims are easier to cut, but they are not rigid. They would compress each time someone sits down, so the toilet would move a little and eventually the wax ring would fail. Right???
@ThePlumbingGurus4 жыл бұрын
I’ve been using rubber shims for 16 years and never had an issue.

Only one major flaw with this fix. Ok two... When you lifted the toilet you compromised the wax seal. Also, more than two shims on that side to support the weight and not crack the tile.

But isn't possible that if a toilet wobbles water could be leaking underneath the toilet but above the flange? I ask bc the duplex I rent toilet wobbles a good bit front to back, about a year ago they had my end of the house raised bc it was more than 2 inches lower than the far end. The house was built in 2008. I work in construction and have faith that the slab was poured level and yes sometimes the ground sinks. Also the septic tank, pump is on my end.
@ThePlumbingGurus3 жыл бұрын
Yes that could be a possibility. That's why you always want to be checking for leaks above and below the flange if its something you are worried about.. We have a video for a leaking wax seal if you need.

This is obviously a brand new toilet, judging by the condition of the brand new shiny toilet bolts. Old toilets often rock because the toilet flange is broken. And then shimming will do absolutely nothing.

You’re correct, that’s why we have a video on a flange extension which will also work as a repair too.

I liked your video simple and easy and funny. I don’t agree with the coupling around the toilet. For the fact anything can get under there and it is not easy to clean up. So once it’s installed and no leaks definitely caulk it.

If you use one of those non-wax seals it should be okay. The trick is to know if you have a wax seal or one of those new foam/rubber gaskets.
