Hi Gordon, EXCELLENT Video. Perfect pacing. And I can qualify this statement. I have worked in the film industry for over 40 years. I also teach classes. My students have went on to be very good filmmakers. A long way of saying, the student (me) has learned a lot from you, the "Instructor." Trust me, don't change a thing. Many thanks. My heart sank when I saw it was 20 mins long, but it actually was interesting and helpful. Unfortunately my background just won't make any of the improvements you demonstrated. It looks like I have to either get a green screen or use the boring white divider I currently use. Thanks for a great video - helpful, not laboured, not too fast or slow with details.

Just to let you know, I'm NEVER EVER going to choose "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli as my virtual background, because I'll get in trouble for showing my friends the human form of art. I ONLY use appropriate virtual backgrounds even though I disappear within the frame when I share pictures of friends, loved ones or pets that died when I was younger or something like that. My parents told me that the 🖥 is very old, because the light quality in my bedroom isn't very good at all. I enjoy using virtual backgrounds very much during my Zoom meetings, because my personal sanctuary is perfectly camouflaged from hackers who plan to spy on me when my Logi 720P webcam is seen on 🔝 of the PC. It's entirely similar to the bad light quality in the office where they keep a very old Mac OS 🖥 that doesn't have good compatibility for virtual backgrounds. Just to let you know, I’m going to teach my friends how to use and fix virtual backgrounds THIS week in November 2020. It’ll be on Zoom. After all, I’m a patient and a good 👩🏼‍🏫. 😂

Great video. I had an event. Had the green screen and had a custom virtual background for the event. If I clicked I have a green screen and then the virtual background, the whole thing just kept shimmering in a weird hybrid my virtual background/ green screen combo. It worked when I unchecked the green screen box. Would you know how I could fix the issue? Thank you for your help.

I've not seen that, so not sure what the issue is. Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the Zoom client? If you have a green screen, and tick the "I have a green screen" box, and then select your virtual background, it should work fine. Only other thing I can think of is that your green screen is an odd shade of green that it's not recognising, or the lighting is strong and casting strong shadows, and it thinks only part of it is green.

A green screen mostly, and making sure the lighting is as even as I can. I'm actually breaking several "rules" (not lighting the screen separately, standing way too close, etc.) but done carefully it works.

That's basically what the whole video is explaining. In short, have a clean, uncluttered background, with plenty of contrast between you and it, and make sure you're well lit.

I can not get back to the original black background. Yes, I have done the adjustment in the settings but my screen is still a grey colour with a with a white outline of a camera in the middle. No one seems to know what to do, even Zoom! Thanks in anticipation.

You should just be able to select "None" (the first option) in the virtual background options in Zoom

Pretty much everything I'm talking about has little to nothing to do with what I'm doing on the laptop - it's how you set up your physical environment so that your laptop/camera can do its thing. If you can let me know what specifically you would have liked me to show that I didn't I'll look at putting together a separate video on that.
