If your outboard motor doesn’t start on the first or second pull, then it needs a little tweaking. This engine works great once it starts but it takes too many pulls to get it started. Anything past 4 pulls is unacceptable.
In this video, I am running a Nissan outboard motor that is manufactured by Tohatsu, Japan’s oldest outboard manufacturer. Tohatsu produces high quality and extremely durable outboard motors.
Have you done your annual tune up? Every year before you take your outboard out, you need to check all the basics including carburetor adjustments, choke, idle, spark plugs, fresh fuel, etc. Stay tuned for more outboard repair videos.

Steve's Small Engine Saloon Hey quick question. I’ve been working on a 1989 Mercury 2.2 and am having trouble. I have cleaned every aspect of it including the carburetor. Each time I take the carburetor apart and put it back on, the engine will run beautifully for about 30 mins then will randomly shut off and not start again. Then, when I take the carburetor apart and put it back on same thing happens. Any suggestions as to why it stops working after a while and needs to have the carburetor played with each time?

If you want to avoid collecting fuel debris, garbage, whatever inside any carb you should run carb dry before motor is stored, can do so while motor is being flushed with fresh water after use. If you count with a healthy motor running strong and want to turn it ON on second pull try this starting procedure : Open tank's air valve, prime fuel bulb with arrow pointing upwards till firm, place the throttle grip to the staring position, pull kill cord off from its switch, make 2 hard pulls, move throttle grip back to min resting position, install kill cord on switch, pull hard once, motor should start right up. Check if works for you...

I have Suzuki 2.5hp outboard portable. It was not started on its 4th trip on a 10.5 ft inflatable boat. Every time it started max 2-3 pull. It was traveled the wrong side up and the fuel switch was on. Not sounded once after maybe 100 pulls. What may be the problem and how can I fix it by myself? I am a first-time user and I am, skeptical to open carb whether I will return all parts of carb in the right way. May I get help from you?

Love your videos! I’ve messed with a few carbs the last couple months and learned a few lessons on my own and from you. The biggest lesson is don’t be afraid to take a carb off! Love your vids! I have that exact same engine! Yes, it usually starts by 2nd pull when properly prepped up by pumping bulb up, full choke and and all that. Being a one lung, it is a noisey rattle trap, but it is reliable. Also, if you don't expect to use motor for a few weeks or longer, disconnect fuel hose and run until it dies out. Choke it and start again till it dies. I've never had my carb off yet.

I was curious if you have run into problems with small engines not starting after being used for a while, i.e. using the string trimmer / lawn mower engine a while, then cutting it off to come in and cool off for 10 minutes and then the engine won't start again. This is a fairly common problem and I would appreciate it if you could do a video regarding this problem. I'm sure there are many others that would appreciate it as well.

How about a little repair knowledge on repairing a outboard motor's starter, and a bit of a electrical diagram on the starting system for troubleshooting a bad rectifier that wired to the coil, or maybe changing out the starter, starting relay, and rectifier ... say the guy has these problems on his dingy having a key switch ignition. Tie it all in for us to make it interesting.

Hello ! Was out on the water for an hr no issues with this engine. I stopped it for 25 mins and went to start again and it wouldn't. It's my first outboard and didn't know you have to put the throttle on a certain a position and then pull the rope, I have been pulling the rope without throttle on set position and It has always taken me 7 pulls or more to start it so I think I flooded the motor. How do I de flood? is there such a thing? I tried putting throttle all the way open and choke closed to possibly deflood and cranked it ten to fifteen times and then tried with throttle on the start position to crank but have had no luck starting, tried also with choke on for a few strokes with no luck either. Could I have fouled up the spark plug?

Someone gave me a Johnson 18HP 1958 . It won't start and to pull the rope , I think I pulled my arm out....I think I need a starter for it. Anyone know about these motors?

Check for spark first those engines use points and the contacts on the points get corroded and won’t conduct electricity. If you’ve got spark then you’ve got to look at the carb

Hey, my 6HP takes 8 pulls to start too. I'm going to clean the carburetor before I take it out again. Do you have any trouble getting it to rev up to wide open throttle? Mine seems to bog a lot. Maybe cleaning that main jet in the carburetor will help. Thanks for making this video. There aren't many Nissan/Tohatsu videos out there.

Steven Smith , my tohatsu 2.5 hp is labelled as a Merc. Runs great for years. No shift levers . Just start and go like a lawnmower. Your Tohatsu is a quality product.

Awesome job Steve. Love your work mate☺👍. I have a 15hp 2 stroke outboard that gets parked up over winter. Do you reckon you could possibly do a video on the maintenance and maybe good ideas for when parking it up in the shed and what to do when bringing it out for summer sometime, some tips or any advice for yearly service etc.

Steve ,this is an off topic question sorry about that. I'm in the middle of a project and hope you can help. I have a Duerr#678 8hp chipper shredder in bad need of chipper blades. Would you have any idea where I might locate some.I think the company out of business. Or could I maybe be able to find a machine shop to make some for me. Great Visio by the way ,I don't have a boat anymore but will that fix filed away for future.

Hey Steve big fan for your videos would you do a video or recommend the best 2 cycle engine for lawn and garden and for marine applications? This would be of great help. I run mix gas at 50:1 with stable and occasionally add sea foam to the mix as well. I then exercise equipment at least once a month except for the outboard Mercury 25 horse 2 cycle.
