Thank you for your work and you helped me save my keyboard. I changed my Redragon K556 keyboard switch from brown to black and broke the PCB when I made the change. Four bottom row switches were no longer registering. After I saw your video, I was able to troubleshoot the issue and solder a wire to three horizontal switches. Great job. Of course, now my bottom switch is no longer hot switchable... but it works!

hello! this video really helped me understand the basics of how the PCB works (coming from someone who hasn't done any type of electrical work in her life, so props to you!) if you don't mind me asking, is there a chance that in fixing the LEDs, we also mess up the keypress? i found that whilst i fixed the LEDs the key press would register the wrong key (IE: key K would type L). not sure if this is because my problem is that the whole column's LED is broken, but any help or advice would be appreciated. otherwise, thanks for the video!
@jiajinzheng3082

Hey stxllr, if key registers another keys thats adjacent to it, it's likely that there is a short-circuit somewhere between the K's column wire and the L's column wire, so when you press K, electricity flows through K's row to L's column. Perhaps consider look around the two column wire, see if there's any place connecting the two column ?

@@jiajinzheng3082 Hello! Thanks for the advice, but I managed to fix my keyboard a while ago. I will just place how I fixed it here as well in case anyone else in these comments got a similar problem as mine: The problem was that there was a short between the column and the pin (which I think is what you mentioned?). Anyway, this meant that connecting to an adjacent column did not work. Thus, I had to figure out which pin the bad column must connect to. If anyone in the comments is wondering how I did this, I think the best idea would be to buy a multimeter to find the continuity between the pin and the column, as for my keyboard the pin and the column connection was one for one. Alternatively, simply using a wire to connect between a random pin and the non-working column and test the key. Keep doing trial and error until you get the right key for the given column. I used electrical tape to secure the wire as the pin was too small to solder with. Hope this might help someone else! :)

@@stxllr4687 Hi, I have the same problem with my keyboard but instead of registering the key adjacent to it my keyboard registers the key 2 keys from the right. For example if I press E it also presses Y. So it types "ey". Same for "F2" "3" "s" "x" and the "alt" key. So basically the whole vertical row is broken. How did you fix your keyboard? I used a wire to connect the right pin (the pin that's lower) of the F2 key to random pins like you said. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. Do you have any idea how to fix it or what the problem is?

@@J0N... I don't know much about the actual inner workings of keyboards/electronics, but it seems like the current (I don't know the proper term sorry) sent from the one key you presed (eg: letter E) is being sent to another column at the same time. For my keyboard, each pin corresponds to a different column. In your case the only thing I can think of is the circuit of column E somehow also connected to the circuit of the column 2 keys adjacent to it. Did you happen to make any modifications to the PCB? (EG: jumper wire, solder, etc)

if you are talking about LED, you could probably use a series of batteries. Just make sure you have enough voltage to power it, and then positive to active pin, negative to ground of your LED, should still work

First of you are awesome at explaining this, second , i spilled like a ton of water on my board and i had no understanding on how it works , my keys have a problem that when i press one it gets registered but it also presses some others adjacent , the problem is it is the whole keyboard not one key , for example num 0 presses 1, 2 and 3 ; u presses i , and space bar goes for v , and a lot others , how do i check and what should i check for? I read all the comments but no one has an issue like this i think , sorry to bother
@jiajinzheng3082

in cases where it register others key (including the key you presses itself) sounds like there are lots of short-circuit happening. You could start with all the adjacent one (eg: U and I) where they sits in a row first, those would be easier fix than others. could try a jumper starting with some working key on the same row (eg: you can break the connection on the PCB from U to I, and use a jumper instead jumper from Y to U, then a new jumper from U to I ), in the case of spacebar you could try the same method (break the broken connection and put a jumper on it) but it would be slightly trickier because i am sure each pcb wire differently around the spacebar area. As long as you are SURE they connect directly, you can always break that connection and replace with a jumper. But the amount of scrutiny is not trivial in your case, so I'd genuinely recommend you take it to those local "computer repair" shop and ask them for identifying the issue .

@jiajinzheng3082
@jiajinzheng3082 2 жыл бұрын
you could test to see if those LED are working properly first, using the method mention in the video. then if LED are indeed broken you just need to buy the correct LED that has your configuration and replace it. But If all these LED are working but not only shows Green when key is pressed, sounds like there may be some broken circuit that happens at (or all) other pins (except Green ) of the LED. Try to scrutiny from the end (eg: tab or "\" key) most likely there some issue happens at the beginning or the end of the row (or even higher upstream) could cause the symptom of entire row not working

theoretically, rgb will only triggers if the switch works fine. If your keyboard doesn't register the key you press. Short-circuit may happen elsewhere (not near the switch you press), In that case scrutiny on the entire PCB may be required

Hey Andrea, if the entire backlight is not working, I speculate the wire closest to the chip (or even the chip leg pin) is malfunctioning. However, those points are a bit delicate, as it could mess up other components if its not done correctly. I suggest to bring it to computer repair for a scrutiny, as they have the probe and can easily tell you where problem is.

Hey, try to trace it the wire (13:06 in the video) and solder a jumper with it. Or you could use a cutter to scratch the surface of the wire to expose those copper under and then solder your new socket onto it (just be careful with this method, you will need to ONLY expose the wire thats connect to the hot swappable socket, scratching adjacent wire could result in short-circuit). So if possible i would recommend to trace it and solder jumper, it's safer that way

Question... what do you think are the odds the 6028 RGB led model is the same as for the Ducky one 2 mini keyboard? phisically they look the same... and I want to believe many keyboards use the same model I want to buy some and try replacing some. This is because one of my LEDs died, saw some oxidation in the pins and I think is shorted... then other 3 LEDs stay lit all the time... 2 of the 3 do change colors when I specify one but not the other... I think they're dying.

Hey, I guess what RBG model is used depends on where the manufacturer base, those that base in china is likely to use same model, but no guaranteer. I think it wouldn't hurt to buy a few to test it, just make sure the configuration is the same as your other RBG on the keyboard (use the method mention in the video) .

Excellent explanation. Learned so much. Question: if my switch malfunction in the same (slightly-diagonal) column, what does that mean? Since they're in a column, and not row - does the same principles still apply? The column includes 5 keys: 8 , i , k , , , and alt. These keys used to work sometimes but now completely non-responsive. The F6 (in the same column) used to not work but now it does. I haven't done anything much to the PCB besides putting masking type to the back side and put some foam in the case. I did use a bit of force to close the stuffed case.

Hey. @Blah @Winter, Same principle should apply on the column, but its a bit tricky as the column often connect to other component (eg: a diode or one of the RGB pin), so it may be hard to find where it actually breaks. @Blah Sounds like there's maybe some disconnection between F6 and 8, see if you can spot that.

Hey Nikko, first, test the RGB in isolation with the method mention in the video (touch each two pin, and observe the light intensity see if it shines through fine). And the problem sounds like there is a leaking electricity (current) some where in your keyboard. Could you try to see if you can find any damage connection it near the key where the RGB problem occur ?

Hey, Krosto thanks for reaching out, and so sorry the late reply, just saw your comment now. By the sound of it, it does seems like one of the connection being loosen, and if for your keyboard that column of the keys are interconnected, that would mean any loosen connection within the same circuit could have caused the problem. it's high hope for your keyboard to be fixed, given it works intermittently, Could you please use the method I describe in the video to trace the connection of the that vertical circuit of the column (2,W,S,X), Starting from the anything upstream that connects to the key "2" > then connection between key "2" to "W" including any connection in between, all the way down to the downstream of "X" where "X" connect to. In theory connection loose in the entire circuit could have caused it, but given you probably use "ASWD" very often, i would suggest start sourcing the cause from the connection between the keys. And you could simply use a twiser to "gently" move the any electrical component that's connected to see if there is any spot that's a bit "shaky", and if you are able to find it, then it could be the point of the loosen connection, then simple solder it back, or solder a wire jumper (as mentioned in the video) to it's direct connected component. Or if it's just a very simple loosen pin, even tapping it back tightly may work. Hope this help :)

@jiajinzheng3082 8 ай бұрын
Hey @krostogaming, Thanks for replying again. I want to clarify that I'm not a professional in electronics or keyboard expert. From my observations of the three keyboards I own, I've noticed that the vertical connections do indeed vary - some are linked to a diode, while others connect to an LED. That's why I didn't include it in my video, as the specifics might not apply to all keyboards. Additionally, I want to touch on the use of a 'jumper'. While it can be a useful tool for re-establishing connections in cases of damaged or broken wires, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution, especially for issues related to broken components or microchips. If you can't spot the loosen or broken connection easily, it might be a bit out of my expertise to provide a solution. In these instances, I would recommend consulting a local electronics specialist for a more thorough examination. I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance in this matter.
