One reoccurring problem I often come across on clients computers is a failing hard drive. It's more complicated to diagnose but I boot the computer with a Hirens USB boot drive and use CrystalDisk info. There is no point in repairing a failing drive plus with Hirens you can mount and external hard drive to back up your data. Conversely the disk cloning program to "image" the faulty drive to a new drive which can then be repaired.

Fantastic video and thanks for posting this interesting stuff, I've made notes and filed elsewhere off my PC for when I next have that issue. One thing though on restore points, going back many years through OS 10, 8.1, 8, XP etc etc, I have never yet gone to Restore and have it complete the restore, every single time I've ever tried that all I have ever gotten is Windows failed to restore! Also I wonder if one day you might do a video on something we can do to improve the abysmal transfer speeds on Win 10, I've never known it where you get speeds in kbps and seem to remember in past OS`s it being much much higher. Is there a utility or something we can do to speed up transfer speeds? Cheers from the UK
@AskYourComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. It's true, sometimes Restore "fails", but I've also seen a non-booting system suddenly come back to life after a restore...followed by "system restore failed". Sometimes it repairs just enough to get you back to Windows. Regarding the transfer speed, that's going to be a limitation of the hardware. The faster the drive, the faster the speed. I can transfer from a HDD to another HDD in my system and it might be 15-20k a second. I transfer from an SSD to my NVME external and it jumps to 130-150k a second

I've NEVER had Windows auto repair work for me and so if anything proved to be unrepairable, I would just do a fresh new install and put back all of my installed programs and do a restore of all of my system drivers and settings, using Glary Utilities and then do a AOMEI Restore since my drivers and AOMEI Backups were being stored on a separate partition or separate drive. More times than none, this proved to be the most effective means as opposed to just how slow windows repair tool really is! In doing so, I could do all of this in about 90 minutes with relative ease and the fresh installation just makes it extra nice! In addition to the said non-reparable status initially, knowing that the age of the drive in question and/or the number of hours in service; I would make an immediate judgement call and replace the drive with another solid state drive and proceed from there plus mem sticks testing and/or replacement/upgrade too! @@AskYourComputerGuy

Excellent info and tutorial! 👍😎 Just a thought, It might be a great thing to have "a Windows good practices video" especially for new installs. Fortunately I've only run across that screen a couple times in the last several, probably 10, years. My go-to first choice typically is using a System Restore Point. However, as I recall System Restore is disabled on Windows 10 installs so I don't know what the default is for Windows 11, but it might be worth doing a video about it. I always check it while I'm going through a windows install process. _Lately, as I mentioned, I use a third party app to clone my OS and app M.2 drive a couple times a week. So if I do run across the problem I can boot an F8 and be up and running in a minute._

Hello, I came across your video by chance while trying to solve a problem with my computer and I am even more lost. My issue is the following: I bought a new computer 2 months ago (Windows 11 pro, ryzen 5 7500F, 32GB DDR5, RX7900GRE). I have 2 SSDs (a 256GB SATA 2.5 with my Windows and my internet browser installed on it, and a 2GB NVMe with my files and other programs) + a 2TB backup HDD. In recent days my PC has become extremely slow when starting up , while looking for the cause I noticed 100% usage of my 2.5 SSD (the one with Windows.) I checked the sata connections, everything seems normal and I also disabled SuperFetch because I have often seen people talking about this possibly causing this problem but without results. So I did some checks with chrystal disk, it told me that the disk is in good health however afterwards having done a disk speed test I arrived at alarming speeds: 12 MB/s, 10 time slower than my HDD (when purchasing the PC I had already done a scan and everything was normal). So I wanted to use the disk check commands you talk about in your video, sfc /scannow does not find any errors. on the other hand, for the 2 CHKDSK commands, after reboot it launches the check, message saying "scan of disk C planned, press any key to cancel", I wait 10 seconds without doing anything and nothing, the pc starts normally without doing the scan... Do you know what can lead to such behavior?

@@AskYourComputerGuy Thank you for your answers, both commands did indeed work via a bootable key. Unfortunately neither of them found the slightest error on the disk (can you confirm that this means there is no "physical" problem on my ssd?). I wanted to use a restore point because I suspect the 11 January update to be the cause of my problem, but I was surprised to see that the restore points I had created 2 months ago after installing my PC (after windows update + drivers instal) had disappeared. All that remained was the restore point created by Windows after the update, but after rebooting, I got an error message saying that it was impossible to restore because a system file was missing... So I tried to undo the last update using the bootable key, it worked for the quality update, but when I tried to do the same for the feature update, I got an error message saying that it was impossible to undo the last update without specifying the cause. I did another test with crystal disk after that, and I still get random speeds, sometimes 16 mb/s, sometimes 200... So it didn't correct the problem.

For me, I have found it is best to do a regular disk clone using third party software. I keep all my documents on seperate drives to my Windows drive so I just boot to the cloned drive and clone it back over. That way you can always continue working while the 'backup' and restore' is being done. All of the windows options I have ever tried failed to work and I'd just go round in circles. So that's why I found it best to invest in another Hard Drive and just have a copy of the OS from when it last ran well. I reclone my drive each time I have a major update of an important and bloaty bit of software (e.g. Visual Studio)
@Turco9494 ай бұрын
All great advice but I'd refrain from running checkdisk (CHKDSK /r) on any drive because if the drive integrity is bad or the drive health has degraded, running this will only worsen the condition. Best to get yourself a bootable swiss army image like Strelec, then run Hard Disk Sentinel to check the S.M.A.R.T. report. IF the health is less than 100% for HDDs and/or there are bad sectors time to get a new drive so focus on backing up your data asap. For SSDs, the health shouldn't be degraded but typically, down to 80%, they will be fine, any less, look into getting a replacement. Either way, on a non-bootable system, if you didn't already have a copy of all your important data, salvaging what you can should always be priority #1.
@AskYourComputerGuy4 ай бұрын
Fair point. Never really run into this because people usually wait too long to call me and get the "slow computer" fixed. First thing I do is back everything up (if not done already), that way if something happens (like the drive tanks during a chkdsk), I'm no worse off than before 👍
