This Video will Show You How to Fix Backlash on Lathe Lead Screw (X Axis) - Adjusting Backlash on a Smithy Machine.
Backlash is the result of a gap between the handle and the worktable on your lathe. This "slop" causes a lag in the movement of the table when you turn the handle to engage X Axis movement of the table.
Tightening backlash is one of the first adjustments that you must make when you set up a new machine. It is important, also for you to understand what is happening so you can achieve accurate results.
Dave shows you how to properly tighten the cross slide screws, nuts, and slides to minimize backlash in a new machine. This adjustment is also something to always keep adjusted for tightness.
