How to Fix BMW AWD & Dash Lights // E83 X3 & E53 X5

The $500 facebook marketplace X3 is back for more! Today, in an effort to clear up some of those dash lights and error codes (oh, and to regain AWD) we’re replacing the transfer case actuator on my 2005 E83 BMW X3. I’m glad to report that we have seemed to have regained AWD, but there still seem to be some german engineering demons lurking in the system. I hope you found this video helpful. More to come soon!

Same AWD and BRAKE warning lamps came on today. Ordered new actuator. 12 hours later the lamps went off. I suspect moisture got into the fuse box to trigger the warning as I live in Arizona and we are deep in our monsoon season.

I noticed you did not use a jack to support the transfer case like some others did. Did you have any difficulty getting the cross member re-attached? It appeared the transfer case did drop down a little when you removed the 4 bolts, even though you did not remove the through bushing bolt. Thank you for putting out this helpful video.

good I changed the servo motor and the oil to the trasfer of my bmw x3 e83 but he put the 4x4 warning light on the dashboard he thinks he needs the restart

You will likely need to clear the fault code for the light to go away

Question(My 2007 x3): My transfer case was changed to a used one and it removed the ABS/Brake/4x4 lights from being on. Now I hear a scratching sound from the back that was NEVER present before. Do you have a professional opinion what could be happening or what could be checked?

I'm sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, it's too hard to make a guess without seeing the car. I would go back to the mechanic who replaced your transfer case and tell them to fix it.

Mine was resolved with the transfer case actuator and wheel speed sensor (I also had to replace the wheel bearing).

actuator looks a lot like an old car window motor.
