→ The fixes ignored by Tories and Labour
𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗢 𝗙𝗜𝗫 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗞𝗘𝗡 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗡 - 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝟮-𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼
I’m so impressed with the new book, Fixing Broken Britain by Alun Drake, that I’ve made a 2-minute video about it.
Anyone who lives in Britain, or observes it from afar, knows it’s a broken country. But none of the main parties are addressing why it’s broken - or how to fix it.
But that’s precisely what journalist Alun Drake does in his superb book, which pinpoints the problems and offers practical solutions.
His lucid insights are presented with flair, humour, and wisdom.
Alun’s book isn’t a bid to launch a new political party, however. His constructive solutions to the United Kingdom’s deep-seated problems aim to uplift the nation’s low spirits.
And I know he’ll be delighted if any of the main parties take up his fixes.
In my view, not only are his ideas obvious answers for broken Britain, but they would also be vote-winners in any manifesto.

Agreed, just with one significant difference. Yes, FPTP has to go, it's not democratic and the EU will insist it goes but "PR" could be anything. WE need to look at all the alternatives and consider them. My choice? STV.

Not much stuff to debate about in this promotional book video. The issues/solutions mentioned are then ones every sane commenter has been suggesting for a long time now, but are only the feiert dew steps on the long road. Assuming the rest of the book follows the lines of this short introduction it should be obligatory reading for almost every English politician, they seem rather clueless and out of their depth. Let's hope for the UK's sake that something at some point soon starts to happen, because the current navelstaring and harking back to past "glories" isn't working, only fooling the gullible. Good luck.

I agree with a lot of what you say Jon apart from the local authorities part. LA's are run in the main by amateurs - people with little to know commercial experience who volunteer to become local Councillors and suddenly find themselves making multi million or even multi-billion pound decisions. It's no wonder so many of them are going bust. When you see some of the 3rd party contracts they sign. They have no experience in managing P&Ls and their governance processes are substandard. In Wales there 3.5m people and 22 councils. Thats average 159k residents per council. That's 22 HR depts, Finance Depts, Executives, Governance committees, Operations teams and all their managers. What a colossal waste of money. If it were me I would shrink the number of councils in E&W to a total of 10. I'd tell them what services they have to provide and how much funding their getting and how much they can charge in CT. Any council that can't comply would need to be absorbed by the nearest successful council. We're wasting Billions on numpties who don't know what they are doing.

These are very meh solutions. Building a circular debate chamber does nothing. Proportional representation will create the permanent deadlock that corruption thrives in. I agree with the constitution in principal, however, I have no trust whatsoever in the crop of idiots I parliament to write such an important document. Giving local authorities more powers could result in more competition between regions, which could be good, but would tend to result in sharper regional inequality. What we need is a competent industrial policy, solid infrastructure policy, a competent trade policy, and a raft of policies to strengthen our weakening union; for example by reintroducing national service, and insisting on English as a first language.
