Old English furniture touch up stain (comes in a bottle) works for darker finishes. Blends into almost anything brown and is slow tinting so it's much more controllable than regular stain. Use as many coats (dab with your finger, wipe with a rag damp with Old English and let dry a few minutes) as needed to get a match. As with stain, if you need it much darker, dab it on and leave it wet for a while, then wipe to see how dark it's getting. Once you get the color right, finish with spray lacquer or homemade paste wax. You can make something similar with maple oil stain (middle light color) stain, thin with kerosene, darken with India ink or burnt umber oil paint. If you want to get fancy, make up 3 small bottles -- light, medium, and dark. I learned about this stuff back in the 70s - I worked at a TV shop and the shop owner had it passed down to him by his father, who had been in the furniture business since the turn of the last century. When delivering cabinet TVs, He always carried his Old English bottle with a half saturated diaper thrown over the top. He could fix a cabinet ding almost as fast as we could ding it. Thanks Don! I found a bottle in my mothers junk when I moved her (she's 88 and has a touch of dementia), and she gave it to me for my carving. Can you fill cracks the same on a log that has been drying before any carving has begun?

Got a log with a hole more than half the length...its a cleaner grain wood....its about 2" wide....what's the best thing to fill the void with?....I will be carving after whatever I use...can i get some input

Good tip thanks Ryan. I have some eagle carvings that pretty dried out and have some wood rot, do you have any suggestions on how to repair them. I’ve dug out the rot as much as could and am letting them dry out, wondering what would be the best to fill the holes with ?

I have a carved eagle with similar thumbnail-sized cracks on the wings, which sound hollow when knocked. For those of us who aren't skilled at this sort of repair work, is there any reason to use cedar shake over wood fill?

looks better and holds over time .. cedar wont rot and just feel like im using the wood better to fill the wedges

I've got a wood sculpture that is fairly old that has some deep cracks. It is not painted but sun bleached from years out in the weather. I am not sure it is possible for me to repair but I really want it preserved. I am in KY if anyone has any ideas of anyone to help. Thanks

i carve the eyes an paint .. i have been looking into do that taxidermy style but haven't got around to it just to much going on to really research it
