How to Fix Drifting/Ghost Movement PSP Thumbstick

After cleaning with no success, I borrowed a broken PSP from a friend and tried his face plate on mine still with no success but when I tried the *calibration* it fixed it! Thank you so much! I thought I had to open it completely from the motherboard and clean it up even further. edit: another problem appeared. It seems from assembling and disassembling so many times the D-pad up and down doesn't seem to respond as responsively as left and right. It is odd since it is seating in a unipad sort of part.

Yes that is the permanent fix I havent done it but im considering it since I can't find replacements for the rubber contact. I saw a video years ago someone did it and never had problems again.

mine worked after a little cleaning with an alcohol wipe and its perfect now. it would mess up every once in a while until recently when it just stayed messed up all the time until this fix now its great. thanx for the tip.

@@lelandgian2521 just the calibration thing. However for me, this only lasted momentarily and would soon fall out of calibration again. Eventually i had to remove the plate to get to the analog stick housing. From there you just take off the screws that hold the stick down, wiggle it out to unplug it, and clean off the contacts with a q tip and some isopropyl alcohol. Plug back in the stick, reassemble, and you'll be golden.

So , I also bought an aftermarket shell and the joystick stopped working. I noticed that the shell was printed very bad and the joystick was oblique, so I simply put a piece of paper where the screw inserts and realigned the base of the joystick.. Now it works perfectly without the calibration.

I just left the screw closest to the screen on the joystick a little loose and its FIXED. the screw seems to make the level uneven if you tighten it all the way so just keep it loose to where it meets the plastic slightly.

It's possible that the faceplate is slightly loose and pressure on the D pad is causing the Home button to be pressed. You could try removing the faceplate and making sure the D pad and Home button are both clean and don't have anything stuck on them.

I never tried any other faceplates as most of the current 3rd party ones have bad reviews and the original Sony ones are mostly scratched or have a lot of wear on them and the few left in good condition go for nearly what an entire PSP goes for.

It’s a bad situation these days can’t even buy another psp, because it’s most likely got the same 3rd party parts in it already. @@wethenorth5536 A few months ago I changed the rubber membrane for the buttons and was looking at getting a factory faceplate but to find one in good shape separately or a good one on a parts PSP is at least $40 and there are very few of them to be found. Your best bet would be to either switch to a newer PSP like the 2000 or 3000 or get a PS Vita in good shape and then jailbreak it (which is fairly easy) and then add the adrenaline PSP firmware which basically just boots into a PSP emulator and you get a better screen and a 2nd thumbstick.

The drift for me was because there wasn't enough pressure on that rectangular plastic part under the thumbstick. Once I tightened down the shell, it worked.

I was having similar issues with stick drift. And after you mentioning how, when you were demonstrating the stick with the cover not screwed on, I took a closer look. Turns out my face plate is busted in the perfect spot so the stick drifts. Thanks for providing the insight!
