How to Fix Failure When Attempting to Copy Boot Files, bcdboot Repair Windows (Tutorial) Hi guys, here I showed up how to fix failure when attempting to copy boot files on windows 10, windows 8.1 and windows 7.
Sometimes a Windows computer user may encounter with this problems during to fix boot configuration data. Some users said that after continuing necessary boot repair processes they got this “Failure when attempting to copy boot files” when they came to these final steps. such as -
" bcdboot C:\windows /l en-us /s (your assign drive letter): /f BIOS or UEFI or EFI or All”
And
“bcdboot c:\windows /s (your assign drive letter): /f BIOS or UEFI or EFI or All ".
However, if you have encountered an error during to fix windows Boot Repair then this video will definitely help you to solve your problem.

thanks for the video, however it failed at the 1st command for me... My configuration is: system is on C: but boot partition(win7) is on D... that is because of a dual boot config... I want to migrate my boot file to C so I can format D, but I am unable to do it... god knows why... (but may be you too know why?) Please help if you can. thanks

No need to migrate, Just insert your windows installation media and boot from that, Press Shift + F10 to open cmd as administrator. After that, select your default boot disk and create a new boot partition and set a new assign drive later or mount mount, after that just copy the boot files to new boot partition. If you don't know how to do that, then I will make a tutorial about this later.

I think I found a way to do it After you open the CMD, do the next: diskpart list disk select disk 0 (choose the disk) list partition select partition X (X mean your old EFI partition number - usually 100mb or a bit more) SET ID=ebd0a0a2-b9e5-4433-87c0-68b6b72699c7 select partition X (X mean your old EFI partition number - It might be selected by default but just for safety select it again) delete partition override (Delete the old EFI partition) create partition efi (Then create it again) format quick fs=fat32 (format the new EFI partition) assign letter=R (give the new EFI partition a letter - mine is R) exit (done! exit diskpart) Then you are ready to store the boot data: bcdboot X:\windows /l en-us /s Y: /f All (X is your windows partition letter and Y is your new EFI partition letter - mine is: bcdboot D:\windows /l en-us /s R: /f All) Done! If you make only the latest command (bootrec /rebuildbcd), again won't fix the problem ? The first three commands are for backing up the bcd or helping to identify the bootrec /rebuildbcd command windows installation ?

Sometimes drive lettering is different in the recovery console. You can check your lettering with diskpart. My comments are in (brackets) diskpart list disk (shows drives attached to computer. Flashdrive, OS drive, other internal and external drives.) list vol (shows stuff like your boot partition, windows partition, etc.) Study the info before proceeding. Try to understand what is what. Mine looks like a bunch of smaller 100MB, 450MB, etc. system/boot partitions plus one bigger recovery one that is a few GB's, and then a giant one for C Drive. If you want to change a drive letter temporarily in recovery, you can do this in diskpart: sel vol 0 assign letter=B: sel vol 1 assign letter=C: exit Etc. Once you have drive letters making more sense (so C:\ is C:\ and other partitions are using whatever temporary letters), then go back and modify the commands appropriately... If you need to check if a drive letter contains boot files, just do this (outside of diskpart) dir B:\ /a:h dir C:\ /a:h This checks if there's hidden files on B:\ or C:\ - often the Boot folder is totally hidden. Then you go and modify those original commands to your new lettering. attrib B:\boot\bcd -h -r -s ren B:\boot\bcd bcd.old bootrec /rebuildbcd Hope that helps.

Had the same problem. If all suggestions fail, do this on cmd. it worked for me. Good luck!!! bcdboot c:\windows The above command will the copy BCDboot file from the existing Windows partition to the motherboard partition and create the BCD in the same partition.

It should not be in system32 on most computers. I have never seen it be there on any. It's more common for it to be in a hidden unlettered boot partition, that has to be given a drive letter with diskpart.
