It is, I had this procedure done 2 years ago and you will be in extreme pain for the first 2 months, then the pain lessens slowly over the next 4 months, (during those 6 months you will be forced to walk on it and practice to walk properly again) After about a year you be back to mostly normal, just more sensitivity then normal if you hit your toe.

This happened to my dad. Not the hammer toe but he damn near took his big toe off with a chainsaw and they had to put a pin through it like the vid. Before they took it out a while later he actually broke a piece of the pin off in his toe and it’s still there today. He says if moves his toe just right the pin will get stuck on his bone in his toe preventing him from moving his toe at all and he has to manually stretch his toe out to get it unstuck.
