When you put your bike up for any period of time over 2 week or better turn the Petcock. off. start the motorcycle until it runs all the gas out of the carburetor. then you put it in storage. It could be a month it could be three months. The gas is not prone to go bad because of being in your Carburator. make sure you got a full tank of gas and store it. Hope That Helps.

Where do you recommend buying a new needle? This was a great refresher video. I don't deal with carbs a lot and I'm working on a Dyna that is gushing fuel out the carb. That pin that holds the float in is extremely tight and I am taking it out the right way. Never seen one this tight. I've cleaned everything several times and it's still leaking. Never thought to clean the sides of the needle valve. Great tip!

First off, thanks so much for all of your videos. Invaluable to the fledgling Harley owner. Secondly, I followed a few of these videos in cleaning and adjusting the carb on my sportster. My problem was that my leg would smell strongly of gas after a ride sometimes. I thought maybe I should rebuild the carb, so I did, and then fired it up. I notice that there's a cloud of gas being exhaled from the mouth of the carb. My air filter smells strongly of gas as well, and sometimes it builds up enough to drip out the bottom of the air cleaner itself. From the internet I'm being told this is Reversion, or fuel standoff. Is there a way to make the carb stop blowing this mist of gas back out of the carb?

4:36 what kind of spray are you using? I have the same problem on my 2005 FXST. Gas is leaking from the overflow hose under the bike. The float needle has to be going bad.

That's carb cleaner. What you need is a new float needle jet. And your problem will go away the gas that we using today is terrible on the rubber pieces. It's a gasket that's O-ring type gasket for the float bowl. don't fix something that isn't broke. If everything is right, that just seals the float ball there is not gas above that level or to that level unless you have a bad float needle. @@jamesbrichan4076 if you are leaking fuel from the overflow hose under the float bowl that means your float needle jet is dirty and has failed. The first thing I would do is check my Petcock to make sure the diaphragm has not failed and leaks gas into your intake through the vacuum holes. check your petcock that it holds vacuum, if it does it is good Take a look at this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXfSaoRvaLR9jqs. as for your float bowl replace your float needle jet. The ethanol in the fuel will corrupt the rubber seal just buy a new one, problem resolved Dealer item . Let us know how it works out any questions just ask.

Happy to help. Your idle jet is clogged and you're choke is compensate for that. So when you push your choke in your motorcycle stalls, if you keep the choke out, you can ride your motorcycle, clean your carburetor, idle jet circuit again. @@justinhaycook8561 clean the carburetor, rebuilding a carburetor is a little overstated. All you have to do is clean the Jets at idle and main float bawl, just clean it that's the only place to fuel is when sit for a while it gets corrupted another thing that's important is your Petcock. test your petcock and make sure the Diaphragm is healthy. If it fails replace the tank screen and the diaphragm rebuild kit you'll have to buy it at the dealership to get a good one it's like $40. Here's the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXfSaoRvaLR9jqs. Let us know how it works out. When you store your motorcycle turn the gas off start the motor and run the gas out of the carburetor It will stall, and you'll never have these problems again.

I would turn your Petcock off and see if the problem stops. Before tearing into your carburetor . Could be the diaphragm is leaking gas into the vacuum line which leads to your intake on your carburetor. If there is no gas leak then you go to your carburetor which yes it would be the float needle, I usually clean them once if that don't work buy a new float needle at the dealer or on eBay but make sure you get a good one. Did you switch out the petcock with an aftermarket? What pipes and what air cleaner? Sounds like lack of fuel.

@@biggbossman1130 I would start with a gas flow, do a petcock check. Pull the air filter apart and make sure you got free-flowing gas when the vacuum pump is put to the vacuum line on your Petcock. Disconnect gas line to Carburator and make sure you have free flowing fuel lots of it. Let us know how it works out. I Believe that the bike is being starved of fuel check all vacuum lines that can collapse and cut off your fuel supply that is needed at higher speeds. Let us know how this works out.

Hey Rocco, I just replaced a 28 year old petcock thinking that was why my (new to me) 96 wouldn't start. It had gas in it without being ridden for a year or so. Believe it or not, the old petcock diaphragm was still good. Can't hurt to have a new one though. The vac lines seem ok although I didn't do a vac test. So I'm thinking the carb needs to be gone through. My question though, is will a stuck float or bad needle keep gas out of the process so that it will not start? It ran fine on the way home. It turns over fine, but leaked (overflow) at the DMV after I picked it up. Then stopped leaking and I ran it all day the next day without issue. I know that a stuck float will cause leaking of gas, but would it starve the bike of gas?

I would go through the carburetor and you don't have to get complicated. Just remove the float ball and make sure the float moves freely. If you're not leaking gas through the overflow hose that means the float needle jet is good but usually they're not and this is the start of your problems. Replace float needle. And clean Carburator. Just installed the new carburetor on my 98 sportster 1200. 1st off, theres no overflow outlet on the new carb...which I’m assuming is a problem...I hooked it back up anyway and went to start it without the air filter on to make sure I’m getting fuel from the accelerator jet (which I am) and a bad backfire at the carb popped the carb right off. Has gas made its way into the oil causing this? It happened twice and the second time it happened immediately...

Did you take a look at jet size? Some do not use an over flow hose. you can switch out the float bowl. hold carburetor in place and then start. Let us know how it works out Pat. If you could send cell number. I will call.

What seems to be happening is it tries to fire upon release of the start button...and with choke fully out (about 50 degrees here) but really shouldn't need choke...I have done nothing with timing but it almost sounds like that has something to do with it...could the fuel ratio be off? the cables did not feel the same as the original carb.

Sorry to hear all the problems. Sometimes it takes me more than once to clean that needle jet seat, and with a good needle jet you should have no problems. The bottom hose is just direct through the oil filter or down the back by the transmission and down. depending on the year. The top hose is just a vent. Very basic carburetor, but they can be a pain in the ass. Are you sure this is a Harley Davison carburetor sometimes these Chinese carburetors give us these type of problems. How to tell, it'll say Holly Davidson on the right side of the carburetor as you're looking at it. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and all your support already13. Happy to help. If it was the float needle, you would have gas coming out your drain hose on the bottom of your Carburator. And it wouldn't run good. How does your bike run? Happy to help there's an O-ring type gasket. It's very reusable, so don't get crazy about it. Just snug it up. Remember the gas don't go over that seal. The gas is 3/4 filled in the float bowl. so gas never gos anywhere above that, unless it's vaporized. Thank you for watching and all your support Jim.. @@IRONTOSS Do you have a vacuum operated Petcock? I'll send a video on how to test. The diaphragm goes bad and it leaks gas into your intake. The Petcock diaphragms are notorious for failing, and so are the vacuum hose from the carburetor to the peacock gets old and spongy, and that causes a problem with lack of fuel flow.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXfSaoRvaLR9jqssi=h-jVaxUPXjCoHZZZ.

I picked up a 94 sporty chopper recently and when I went out to my garage after a day of riding, I noticed gas was leaking pretty good from the overflow line (I forgot to turn off my petcock when I got home). So I turned off my petcock immediately. Next day, I pulled the carb, cleaned it out and put it back on. As soon as I turned my petcock back on, gas started leaking from the overflow again. Any ideas?

Happy to help, your float bowl needle jet is bad. You will have to buy a new one. The ethanol in the fuel deteriorates that rubber tip. Replace it and your problems are behind you. Happy to help. I would check the Petcock and make sure the quality of gas is clean. Dirt or rust in the fuel tank will disrupt the float needle operation. I havent checked that tube for leaks (i have skidplare on now wonder if i can even access it) but air intake cover had gas inside, a pretty good amount. Fuel switch seems fine wonder if i need to do this needle valve

Causing your air filter to get saturated with fuel. If the needle jet was bad on your float, you would have gas out the overflow hose on the bottom.

I think it was spitting fuel straight into airbox...the sound and splatter of gas or oil in there I will bring a new petcock to the friend we know with motorcyle garage for a tune and installing this piece I did forget to turn gas on trying to start a few times and then when I turned it to on she fire up...but maybe it still is faulty and not holding the air pressure like you tested on that switch

I overfilled my 02 FXDWG. Ever since then, my little tube leaks from the bottom and is draining my tank completely. You mention it could be a bad petcock. How do I test it prior to opening up my carborator? Harley just rebuilt my carb 3 months ago. Did the overfill cause this?

Happy to help. Over filling the gas tank would not cause this. Usually it's your float needle jet is corrupted by the bad fuel. You can replace it or replace the whole starter I would replace the starter clutch.That is inside your starter. you will need to remove your primary cover and starter gear. Happy to help. That brass collar is for your slide needle seat, when you removed the main jet that collar fell out. Hope that helpes. It goes in a certain way you'll see the skinny end faces up slide it back in where your main jet screws in. If you put it in the wrong way, the motorcycle will run rough so your needle from your slide seats and it's nice fit when in the right direction. Hello I have a 883xl on a 2004 plate. I changed the needle as you suggested, but, i still have fuel leaking. Sounds like you have dirt or rust in your gas tank. How your screen in your tank look. Some things is corrupting the needle and seat. in your. carburetor. Did you clean petcock and screen? Let us know how that works out.

Two wheel Rocco I have an 03 sportster 1200 I just bought iv cleaned the carb on it and have it running well the bike came with a manual petcock from lowbrow customs to get rid of the vacuum operated one anyway every once in awhile while sitting at a stop light or something it will start pouring gas out of the over flow I figured maybe it got something in the carb and isn't letting the needle jet seat all the way I pulled the tank off cleaned it out so I know there isn't any debris in the tank and it'd only sporadic would you recommend anything else?

You check the tank audit is clean the Petcock screen is clean so you did your part. I would replace the float needle jet. There's a good chance your problems will be solved. I have a 1980 Shovelhead that has been sitting waiting for Orange County Choppers NY painter to finish my paint. Initially, when I put it all back together the bike would only run with choke pulled out. Idle or mixture made zero difference and it would stumble if I tried to twist the throttle so I rebuilt this Keihin 40mm cv carb and had green ethanol evidence throughout so I carb cleaned it and did a fresh rebuild and fresh accelerator pump as well. I did the 20 degree adj on the float and had to bend the float tab way up to achieve level float while carb at that angle didn’t seem right to me. I can start again and put float tab back to normal but they say to adj this way to compensate bike starting and not leaking out of float bowl while leaned over on kickstand. Happy to help when you adjust the float levels you're making it richer or leaner still the needle jet is what leaks so with that squared away that is something that doesn't get touched when I was a kid that used to talk about that. replace the float needle jet, that 'flaot is a factory setting. I know this information is out there, that says a lot of different things but if you're motorcycles leaking, gas or running very rich. Your float needle jet needs to be replaced That what cause that.. It does not seal and it lets more gas into that float bowl, which makes a richer running motor.

I already set at slightly tipped 10-20 degree float adj it doesn’t leak out of overflow while on kickstand and runs hard so do I change it back or leave it alone on this shovelhead cv carb set up. Btw it’s a keihin 40mm from a 1996 superglue and the shovel is mildly crammed and bored 30 over! I put 180/75 jets in. What do you think Rocco?

@@TwoWheelRocco its fixed , the problem was the the pump diaphragm and the tip of the inlet needle they where not sealing properly, changed the fuel inlet aswell the old one had a tiny crack in it, this was not easy to replace but its done ✅ thank buddy for your help 👍🏻

That was old-school. I have never adjusted the tab on a Sportster carburetor. I hope that helps thank you for watching. Float needle jet gos bad .the fuel is terrible today and that what corrodes the rubber tip. Replace and no more over flow problem.

Just watched this video and a bunch of your other videos and love the content it’s super helpful and I believe this is my issue with my 95 fatboy. I recently replace the cracked plastic fuel I let with a brass one and I think some of the shavings got into the float needle. I cleaned it out but it’s still dripping fuel and I’m just going to replace it. I know you posted this a few years ago but do you still have the link or part number for the replacement needle ? Which needle valve will fit a 97 FLHTCU? Is it the same as the one for the sportster? I see from photos on ebay that the some needle valves do not have the little spring loaded button on the top. It appears that the 97 FLHTCU uses a valve with the button on top. What does the spring loaded button do?

At the beginning you said there are only 2 ways of leaking fuel through the bottom hose, well ive checked the float needle and replaced it with a new one, but it is still leaking fuel through the hose with a fast drip and I think my petcock is the culprit. Reason I say that is it wasnt feeding fuel to the carb, well I looked and the vacume hose had come loose, so I reattached the hose and it started up but now I have a continuous leak out the hose and I dont think its the needle. Could you tell me what gives?

@@TwoWheelRocco Hey Rocco I changed the petcock with a new one, now when I try to start it, no fire up, pulled the fuel line from carburetor to make sure its getting fuel and none to be seen out of hose and carb bowl, its like the vacuum plunger is not releasing fuel to the carb. Replaced vacuum lines under tank, still no fuel to carb. Dont know whats going on.

Update: switched the fuel petcock to reserve fuel is flowing, cranked it a while still no start, pulled carb off to check if bowl was filling with gas, dry as a bone, dont know why the on position isnt working on the petcock though.

@@flakehd8839 I would test the diaphragm on that Petcock. with the vacuum pump and see if you could flow fuel. that will act like a running motor I'll send you the video I think it will help, what is the same set up as your Harley vacuum operated Petcock.. See if you flow fuel by connecting the vacuum pump. test it. Let us know how this works out. Is this a new petcock or just the diaphragm?

Happy to help. I would avoid that. You will destroy that Carburator. All you need to do is put the float needle in. it's the rubber on the end that gets compromised by the ethanol fuel additive. Thank you for the reply. My problem is my bike keeps randomly flooding. Everyone keeps telling me it’s the needle but the needle looks fine, I cleaned it all and it seems fine. I did however find a tear in the slide diaphragm. Could that cause my flooding?

Your slide diaphragm will not cause flooding of your carburetor. Your float needle jet could look good, But will not seat properly. The rubber on the tip is bad. I have done hundreds. Replace it and your problems are behind you. Let us know how it works out. Replace it. Good luck.

Sorry to keep bothering you but I changed everything and adjusted the float and put it back on and it ran for a few minutes, I shut it off, and now it won’t start. The carb just popped really loud and smoke came out.

@@gregoryjergons8196 sounds like it's getting overwhelmed with fuel. Redo the carburetor. Needle jet is the only place fuel comes from. I have never adjusted a float level they are pre set from the factory.
