Electricians and plumbers are eager to open up the walls and unwilling to patch it up. Handymen are charging an arm and a leg for small odd jobs. This video is so helpful. Thank you!!

they arent eager.. they just have to. And patching drywall, while easy, is time consuming, so it's not reasonable to excpect a plumber or electrician to spend their time doing that without charging for their time accordingly. and their time is far more valuable than drywall repair.

I have 2 holes in dryhole where my recliner popped holes in the wall leaning back into it. Handyman gave me an estimated price of $1,200. The 2 holes are 8" by 8" & 13" by 9". I am a widow (77) on SS. I will do the repair myself thanks to your video. Much appreciated !
@WickedLobstah978
@WickedLobstah978 Ай бұрын
$1200 is criminal for that. I could patch those both in under 3 minutes then its just tape n mud which would take no more than 5 minutes.. He can then leave and come back next day and hit it again (another 5-10 minutes). To save time for him and money for you, he could leave a sanding block and you could lightly sand it the next day and then paint.. If you add all the total time this job would take for drywall, mud and paint, it is less than 1 hour of work! If I lived near you, id come help you for a cup of coffee. It bothers me that these scumbags want to overcharge especially senior citizens.. Over charge the millionaire. Not the average person. That guys top price should have been $250-$400 (that is still great profit for such little work completed, unless he had to paint too.. Its not even worth that, but people gotta understand that doing even a small job takes away from other work opportunities for that day and they need to still make a days pay, but $1200 is ridiculous and that's why I say $250-$400.. Gets it done quick and goes to another job. I am an expert in my trade. I work in MA in many multi million dollar properties and have worked with over 100 guys in my trade and can definitively state that I am the very best at my trade (at least from the people I have seen do it).. And as an expert, I wouldn't dare try to charge you that much.. The guy who quoted you is a scab and is what's wrong with society. Greed is everywhere. Glad you saw this video though and can save yourself the money and stress of being taking advantage of.

@@newuser689 drywall patch? Indeed, I use a method called a peel back relief, and always use 5 min speed mud, the speed mud or hot mud, dries faster, there is a certain point when the mud can be shaped, I can shape a float in 1 coat, that would normally take 2-3 coats of regular box mud, i then use a heat gun to further speed up the drying process, because you can shape it, there also is a lot less sanding, in some cases when I cut the paper from the surface of the existing drywall (relief cut) along with 5 min mud, i can float the patch flat in 1 coat, with zero sanding. This of course takes a lot of practice, flexing the knife with correct pressure, clean cool water to mix with, and years of practice. I wish I had time to make a short video of it, perhaps some day I will have one of my employees video with phone and upload to KZbin. Beat of luck

Thank you so much for the crash course! This is something that wasn't covered in high school. We only applied mud to pencil holes and staple holes. I do, however, remember our teacher bringing us to the gym storage where we could find the only "big enough" hole to use a mesh he placed behind the wall, holding it flat using strings then puddy it... I HAVE done this when I did interior painting on my summer job and it was not easy.

On pre-existing textured walls, dab the perimeter of the wet mud with a damp sponge to blend and eliminate new edge; otherwise, you should sand the edge when dry before texturing the patch, which is painstaking and unpleasant. New texture will not hide that edge.

I’m journeyman drywall finisher and I’m warning everyone , unless you want to get dust all over everything in every room of your house , DO NOT USE AN ORBITAL SANDER IN YOUR OCCUPIED HOUSE . I mean you got the main points , but if you have exposed mesh tape after you sand , it will show through paint and possibly your through texture.

No orbital Sanders in an occupied house... Yes... Agreed UNLESS.. you are able to move everything out of the room you are working in. I have had to occupy my house each renovation and have found just closing one room off (vents and all) and opening the windows in that room made the difference. No dust all over the house if you tape off the vent, open the window and just work that room. Hand sanding just doesn't get that even flush with the wall look.. or rather... It's something only very skilled dry wall experts get down... 95% of the hand sanding I've seen has that pillowy effect and is good enough for an apt but if it's my house I want it to look good for long term. I promise... I've replaced Hundreds of walls and just do it...

I think I'll give it a try myself instead of calling in someone to do it. I hit the gas instead of the break after I entered my garage. Left about a foot long hole not that wide. I hear this happens occasionally with people. Thanks for the excellent instruction.

If you cut your square patch first, then use it to trace the perfect size hole over the hole to be patched, you will save time and have a more precise fit.

Helpful tip: When you apply the drywall compound keep your knife as clean as possible and make it as smooth as possible and not leave any lines. A few minutes of correcting that will save you lots of time and elbow grease when it comes time to sand and make it flat. Also I prefer a hopper than those cans of texture. It doesn't provide the almost identical texture Im looking for.

This is great. But it would also be very helpful to have a precise shopping list of the stuff you need to do all of this so people aren't left scratching their heads in the hardware store at all the different (seemingly innumerable) choices on the store shelves.
@onasknox9284
@onasknox9284 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure by now you've fixed your problem, 2 months later and all, but here goes for future people who read your comment and agree; One razor blade knife One drywall breadpan(the long pan for sheetrock mud) One drywall knife(I know, I know. It's the wide spatchula looking thing in the video, not another knife. As with the breadpan, any hardware store stocker will know and point you to it, and aside once in the section, you can't miss them. The width is about spread, the bigger your hole, the more mud, the bigger the knife, the more surface area. Or better said, pros use different ones for different stages of finishing work, ignore them all but the short one. For the purposes of this video, you just want the one that's as long as you hand.) Some mud. Perhaps a pint if your hole is small or you do the square patch and are just filling seems. Any kind is good, just grab one that says quick dry, you will not need a 5 gallon bucket. One sanding sponge. Grab the one that looks like a trapezoid, and not the brick, easier to press your fingers when sanding stubborn bits, it's useful for more than just corners. A chunk of drywall. There's no real need to purchase a whole 4x8 piece, they will almost certainly have scrap the size you need laying about and will sell it to you cheap or just give it to you to be rid of it. Just get what you need here, specially if you're in a car. If they don't, let them know you're in a car, and they will just cut it for you. And screws if you wisely use the wood backer method. It works wonderfully by the way. I don't remember what he called it, but it's the best one for holes caused by elbows. Every professional will look for tips he doesn't know and here while nothing new stood out, these were all solid tips amd methods. If you use that orbital sander or palm sander, get a real sheetrock mask. If you can't get one in time, then Don't use the sander, it is a Lot of dust. In fact, for patch work in a room in your home I doubt you want to dust literally everywhere, and with lungs you care about, just use the sanding spounge, you only have to once after all. Oh yes, if you need to remove broken sheetrock for a square hole, buy a drywall saw, also called a rasping saw. Will slice that square you need infinitely faster than the razor blade knife and you can use the knife to finish the pretty bits. You will want both, so buy both.

i had a huge hole to fill in once , i used 4 screws that were about twice the thickness of the drywall , cut a small piece in a shape of ,,X and put it behind the wall where i screwed it to the drywall that was okay then i put a piece in the now cut out hole with the shape and filled in .. it worked fine for me - hole was high up so no pressure was to be applied on the patch

Thank you for this video! What's the difference between spackel and mud? I have spackel for the walls when we did painting last year. Does it depend on the size of the hole? There's some water damage in my bathroom to the wall and the wall has picked with some smaller but obvious "tears" along the wall between the tub and the sink and some bubbles under part of the wall paint that haven't broken open yet like the others. What would you recommend? Not big enough for a patch but awesome to know those exist. Thank you!

@@sirfakealot5041 If you look at economics, yes the USA is near the very top. You might have ideas of what makes a better country, but standards of living is basically how much buying power average person has. Most countries have higher taxes which leaves less money in the hands of the person who earned it.
