Thanks, Denis.You just saved me about $450 ($295 parts, $115 labour plus tax), which is what the dealership wanted to charge me for replacing the seat belt assembly. I'd buy you a beer if you lived nearby.I just fixed it myself thanks to your very well produced video, and it cost me at most $30 in tools and materials and about 30 minutes work. The Honda dealership charged me $115 just to read the diagnostic code, and all they were willing to tell me was "it's an airbag issue". I told them that I was going to stand at the counter until they produced the exact code. $115 for 5 minutes work. No wonder I don't let them touch my car unless it's under warranty.Well done, Sir!

You're the MAN!!! My mom's Honda Element had this problem and our mechanic quoted us $700 to replace the buckle! After watching your video it cost $2.50 for a T10 security torx driver and half an hour of my time and the light has stayed off for a week so far!

Thanks so much, Denis!!! Your instructions and camera work were superb and worked like a charm! My SRS light was on since I bought my 2001 Civic five months ago down in Victoria, BC and the previous (original) owner had a $700 quote from Honda to fix it. I wouldn't have bothered fixing it, but the seatbelt latch itself has been acting up the past two months - I've had to force the seatbelt in several times before it would latch. I went to my local Honda dealer and they quoted me $500 with labour (one hour) to replace the latch! Canadian Tire had a set of eight of the 'Tamper Proof' Torx bits for $9.99 (#025-0012-4). The pharmacy at Walmart gave me a very fine (0.5 mm) syringe which I used to lubricate the switch.. I managed to avoid damaging the seal by getting the point in between the switch pin and the seal and injecting some contact cleaner. I used a wee bit of silicone lubricant on the latch and now it works like new.

Fixed my 03! Saved me $700+ here in Canada. Even if it comes on again it doesn't take long for the process. I too used a syringe to inject the cleaner into the red rubber seal causing it to swell then clean well, without losing the seal entirely. When resetting the light, I had to wait longer for the SRS to turn off each time.

My 03 Civic EX airbag light came on about 6 months ago. Tried reset but soon came right back on. Figured it was something with airbag naturally. Ran across your video and figured I would try it. Worked perfectly man. The only difference with mine was my seat belt light wasn't coming on at all. I never noticed before because that's first thing I do. Put belt on. But yea contactor was stuck. I didnt realize the SRS and seat belts were connected. Thanks for the great video! I also want to add you do not need that T-10 bit. Just a small perfect size flat head screwdriver will do, that works for me.

That's not even true the dealer you took it to bs you cause mine it from Canada and they ordered me multiple parts. Transmission, alternator, new air bags under that crazy recall and they also scanned it for free because my airbag light was on and it turned out to be a faulty passenger side seatbelt tensioner which cost an arm and a leg but they were able to order it also.

I just finished doing this, ain't it worked! I'm so happy right now! Note to new comers, follow ALL of the steps. I tried to just skip to the end when you have to short the fuse with the two wires, and it did not work. So I did exactly what he said and now I can't stopping smiling! I had my SRS light on in my 2002 Civic Si for a little over a year now. I verified that it was a 9-3, but I was concerned because the light would never intermittently come on - after starting the car, I put my on my seat belt and the light would go off. When I took off the seat belt, the seat belt light stayed off no matter how many times I tried. I did this DIY, and I'm glad to say that the light functions perfectly! I should have done this earlier, but I'm doing this now because I'm selling the car soon. Thanks for the helpful DIY!

2001 Acura 1.7EL; I determined SRS light was on because of a faulty buckle. The buckle actually would not click in anymore so I replaced it for almost $400.00 (part only) from Fairview Acura in Kitchener. Afterwards when I got a new timing belt installed, they noted the SRS light was on. I asked them to reset it while it was in the garage. They wouldn't reset it without charging me $60.00 and whatever diagnostics fees to find out why is was enabled. I already fixed the problem I just wanted the SRS reset. Hence for the last 2 years I have been driving with this idiot light on because of the bad customer service in Kitchener. Denis Bro! Thank You for the information.

I called the local Honda dealer and it's only covered in Canada for 10 years, unlike the lifetime warranty that US owners seem to get. Now that doesn't seem fair. Thanks, you're the best! Followed your steps and they worked. My problem was even worse that yours. I've owned my 2001 civic for almost 3 years and it always had the SRS light on it. The airbag light never came on so I didn't even know it existed until I saw your vid. After spraying CRC electronics cleaner in that hole several times it finally worked. Thanks again, the dealer wanted over $500 just to diagnose the problem. Would have been another $500 to replace the buckle.

Thanks for posting this video, Denis. Your instructions are clear and concise. The problem with my 2004 Civic seemed to be a dirty driver's side seat belt buckle (female end). For the last few weeks the seat belt has required some wiggling in order to lock into the buckle. After following your instructions for determining the code, dismantling and cleaning the buckle and resetting the airbag light, all is good again. Huge time and money saver!

Did this this weekend. Worked GREAT! Lights been off for a few days now, so should be working. Easy to do, just like the video. Only change I made, I used the needle end of a safety pin to pull off the little red seal, then once it was almost off, little tweezers to get it all the way off. Radio shack sells contact cleaner, it was $11.00 for the bottle and Harbor Freight sells a kit with the #10 torx bit, it was $4.99. I already had the compressed air. Thank you so much for posting this video.

Denis Poirier I went ahead and reset my 9-3 code and tried unbuckling/buckling my seatbelt to correspond with the seatbelt light on the dash. The car still somehow knows that something is wrong with the seatbelt buckle though. Not sure how. When I buckle, I do it until the seatbelt light turns off. When I unbuckle, I do it until the seatbelt light turns on. How does it know something is still wrong??? I'm going to run a continuity test on the wire harness tomorrow.
@denispoirier1910 жыл бұрын
Did you clean the switch? It wants a clear distinct on/off signal, also there are 3 wires i believe so one of them may not be for the seatbelt light but for the airbag module. Also make sure that your code is indeed 9-3.
@danman28110 жыл бұрын
Denis Poirier I did not clean the switch yet because I didn't want to void my warranty. Instead, I wanted to verify that it was indeed my seat belt buckle switch and not my wire harness so Honda doesn't come back to me with a bill for diagnostic fee and changing out the wire harness (which isn't covered by warranty for some strange reason). I didn't know that it wanted a clear distinct on/off signal. I assumed the computer detected if the switch was faulty by knowing if the seat belt buckle was still engaged while the car is off and locked for X amount of time (therefore knowing no one is in the car). My situation makes sense if the switch does need a distinct on/off signal. I was only basing the engagement of the switch from the seat belt light indicator on the dash board. How did you find out that it required a distinct on/off signal? Looking at the helms manual for a 2002-2003 Civic SI (EP3), page 23-71, it provides you with a troubleshooting procedure to help users determine if code 9-3 is related to the buckle, wiring harness, bad ground connection between multiplex control unit or other area. The couple of steps ask to check the seat belt buckle by testing the three prong (three wire) connection underneath the seat. If you disconnect that wire and test the three prongs, it should indicate if the seat belt buckle is faulty or not. Prong #1 - Ground Prong #2 - Seat Belt Buckle switch in closed position circuit Prong #3 - Seat Belt Buckle switch in open position circuit The connection should only read 0-1 Ohms during the continuity test.

Great video. Saved me $385. I didn't cut out the small red rubber grommet. I got an insulin syringe and loaded it with contact cleaner and worked the needle between the pin and the grommet and injected the cleaner directly into the switch. You can buy these syringes at any drugstore for about $3 for a package of 10. They are handy anytime you need to lubricate small parts. Also, it is a good idea to stuff a rag down between the buckle and the seat in case you drop a screw.

My experience... Took into a USA dealer, diagnosed 9-3 said it would be $600 to fix. I mentioned the us warranty they said that only covers the buckling mechanism. I called another dealer and they said ... only 2004 and older cars covered (I have a 2005 how convenient). I called Honda corporate and they said yes this should be covered and gave me a case manager. It sounded like they were genuinely concerned the dealer didn't cover it. I imagine it would put them into some legal liability as your airbag will not deploy. Hear back 2 weeks later from case manager and they said that they checked with the dealer and that since it's not the buckling that is an issue it's not covered (despite haven't a very clear conversation regarding the buckle switch being faulty). Complete 180 on me, and said the car was so old they couldn't cover it under good will either. Don't bother calling Honda over this, they will just waste your time. It's really lame that some dealers are fixing this, some aren't, there should be a consistent answer on this. I suspect the 3 pin buckle switch connector is open, close, and common. You should be able to just jumper the connector so the car thinks the buckle is always buckled.

This is the followup mentioned in my previous comment. Anyway, I opened the buckle and, after blowing air all around the switch, etc, was unable to get the switch to fail....but that didn't stop the next step of using the very-fine syringe to try to inject contact cleaner into the switch without destroying the seal...but...turns out the seal is REALLY fragile (due to age?) - so much so that the very-fine syringe needle (really really small needle) CUT the seal with its EDGE after piercing it. So that was that - the seal ended up being destroyed just like in this video...but...after completing everything that needed to be done with the switch and putting it back together, I could NOT get the seatbelt light to light - this had the added effect that the SRS light didn't stay on but was NOT the desired end result. So I took apart the buckle again and found that the torn seal itself was blocking the switch plunger. THIS time I removed most of the seal as with the video and everything appears to be as it should be as far as appropriate working is concerned. I still do not know if the problem with the switch is simply a binding plunger or dirty contacts...but both of those possibilities have been handled for the time being (until the now-open-to-dust switch gets dirty for real). Again, thanks very much for this video - it was very clear and this particular repair was actually trivial because of it.

Amazing video, one thing though don't do the paper clip when resetting I had so much trouble removing and placing, its best to use a wire and only use one hand when shorting. Thanks for the video it saved my inspection coming up.

John Jero It is covered in the US because the US government made them do it. That didn't happen in Canada. I don't think there is much you can do about it.

Wow what a great video! I had this exact problem on my 2001 Civic and was able to get the seatbelt sensor good as new after watching this. Thank you so much for posting this and saving me (and others) a ton of money!! PS. Its not essential to cut out the red rubber piece (6:00≈in video) to get the sensor working again.

Thanks so much Denis !! Works like a charm. I would like to mention just for the record that i was quoted a price of $425 plus taxes and install just this month ( October 2014 ).

Bought a 2002 civic with srs light on. I tried spraying the cleaner in the belt buckle a lot. Didnt work as some people described. So i took it apart , cut the red rubber piece and sprayed electrical cleaner in there. Worked like a charm !

Great video, never knew you could pull the srs codes via jumper cable. FYI, honda in most cases has a lifetime warranty on seatbelts therefore, I would recommend pulling the codes and if it has something to do with the seat belt, call the dealer and it will be replaced for free. They will charge if the code is not related to the seatbelt so I would recommend pulling the code first.

Awesome Thanks. This light has been on in my dash for over a year. I was able to fix the seatbelt light but didn’t know how to clear the airbag light. Now it’s off!!!!! Definitely use the wire version. I tried the paper clip and it kinda worked but more difficult as it’s more rigid so trickier to put in and out quickly

Great video and it helps a lot to see what is involved in getting this back to be safe and operational but before you go through this much effort check with the dealer. Dealer did the diagnosis and read the 9-3 code at no cost. My replacement of the seat belt socket was covered under the vehicle serviceable life full warranty at no cost!

Thank you Denis for the simple fix! There was no way I was going to (or could) pay the exorbitant price quoted by the dealer to repair a critical flaw affecting occupant safety. Something that in my opinion should be covered under a lifetime warranty. I'm very happy to get the airbag system operational again. One thing different I did was use a safety pin to scrape out the little red rubber instead of the razor knife reducing damage risk to the pin.
