I really like that you take care of your equipment. Too many people treat gear as disposable. A good reel is not cheap and if taken care of they can last decades.

That video is going to give me stress dreams. In my early teens I used to service my reels. Basic reels like budget Shakespeare's and Mitchell 300's. The 300 was a fancy reel back then. I still used to find it difficult. The main thing was to put grease on the inside and oil everywhere else. If I opened a modern reel it would look like a claymore went off in the room. 😂 Nice work by the way.
@12babyapes59

Mitchell 300 is easy, only tricky part is the bail return spring.

Corrosion X is great stuff, I work on airplanes for a living and we use it to coat the inside of the wings as a preventative measure. Fun Fact: The Navy developed Corrosion X for the planes on the aircraft carriers due to the salty environment.

You're a hoot, "... any salt corrosion or old grease and stuff like that, it's like you ex, you just gotta get rid of it," that's a clever line. Ryan, your videos are getting increasingly polished. Man… that was a great tutorial 🔥! I won’t buy a reel unless you or Tackle Advisors tells me it’s worth the money. Huge fan of both of you. Tackle Advisors has a link to a “ bearing buddy “ tool that you may be interested in. Thank you for all the work you put in! Do you have any reels that you would rather send in to have serviced, other then Van Staal?

Hello, first of all, good video, I'm commenting because I have a question to ask you, could you recommend a type of grease for my reels? I have seen the ones from the shimano brand (ship-0, ace-0,..), but I am not sure which one to use in each place. thank you.

Great. Unfortunately I cannot do the amount of fishing that used to do. Use Multiplier , Grinder and Sometimes Center Pin. I take off my line and check for damage. Then strip those reels down to the casing. Was them out with diesel fuel and Air dry them. Do a inspection on the parts oil and grease and put back together. My oldest reel is over 50 years Penn 49 /49A / Jigmaster 500/ 505/ 85 Delmar , Diawa 50 H/ 350 H, Point 180 , Mitchell 321 , Stillstar 8000 and 7 Okuma. All as smooth as new. Taking a whole day to service them. Individual wrapped in their own sock. Just maintenance and they will last a lifetime 🎣

I tried to open a shimano reel and while trying to put everything back a tiny spring flew off and landed somewhere on the floor.. i couldn't find the tiny spring and not only that. Also a very tiny washer also felt off. So that was it.. the shimano reel turned into a useless brick.. i was so pissed that the next day i went to the store and spent $200 on another reel.. what an expensive way to learn. Fast forward, 4 years later i had bought many many reels., some to replace reels that i had broke or damaged while fishing.. in other words, i just buy a new reel when too much sands get inside the reel.. but i don't try to fix them because a damaged reel is better than a bricked one.

I rather do preventative maintenance first. Lock down the drag, run fresh water through the line, spray down the roller on the bail. spray the reels down after with mist from a spray bottle and wipe it down. Oil knob shaft and roller.
@RyanMorie
@RyanMorie 2 жыл бұрын
That’s definitely important too! It’s not an “either or” trade off though. While I wash off my gear after every trip and oil my line rollers every 2-3 months. I’ll usually tear down a year every 12-18 months based on usage! Tight lines Sir 🍻🤙🏼

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

Great video Ryan, quick question on your rods though. Do you prefer the quality of your ocean’s legacy rod more than your Phenix black diamond or vice versa. I know your rods are different specifications but just if you had to choose one brand over the other. Annnnd where to buy Thanks

Thanks for the video man.just start doing maintenance by myself recently and this is very helpful for me,thanks. I have a question to ask if you don't mind : is it OK using the WD-40 or any kind of degresser as a cleaning fluid? I'm thinking of using WD-40 to wash the old greese out,some peole say it will ruinig the reel and others says it's totally fine, makes me very confused which one is the correct method.i'm curious what your opinion. Thanks for answer the question BTW.😃😃

I think one should at least know how to clean your drag washers and put them back. take the parts diagram for your reel and put the washers down one by one as they come out and match to description.. often it is something like tabbed metal washer, teflon washer, metal washer with squared midddle, then teflon and and tabbed metal one again, repeating the pattern.. clean that sucker up with some degreaser (I use some brandy if I have nothing else at hand.) most of my reels are pretty old and the spinning ones all tend to have drag in the butt, only one screw to remove to get it apart. getting a small parts tray with compartments makes it easy to remember which parts and screws etc go together in each section I still stack it out in order inthe trays..
