Plus, you can get oversized faceplates for outlets and switches. I just completed a bathroom remodel, and the drywall with the smooth finish created the sunken outlet box situation. The spacers and the oversized faceplate worked great.

There is a fourth option when the drywall is damaged so the wings on the receptacle fall in the wall. There are metal repair rings/plates that wrap around three sides of the hole and slide between the mounting wings and the drywall. They use the surface and of the wall to create a false/floating surface for the screws to snug up against.

May I suggest an additional safety test. When you plug your tester into the duplex outlet to verify that the circuit is off, TEST BOTH SOCKETS. While replacing the 40+ year old outlets in my sister's house, I discovered that on one of the kitchen outlets, the top and bottom sockets were on separate circuits. My tester was plugged into one of the sockets and indicated power was cut to that circuit. But when I pulled the outlet from the box, I got zapped. The other socket was still hot. I had to then locate the second breaker and shut it off as well. The outlet was obviously wired this way on purpose when the house was built. It was literally a shocking discovery. Fortunately, I am still alive to talk about it. 🤨

You need to check dead both outlets. In a lot of homes, the bottom outlet is switched and the top receptacle can still have power.

I’ve done a lot of public speaking in my career and I found that eliminating extraneous words and phrases makes my message more interesting and more effective. Try to eliminate the word basically from your presentation. It doesn’t add any value and it becomes a distraction. The same is true for the phrase “pretty much”. You over use both of those. Listen to this video and image you didn’t say basically or pretty much and I’m sure you’ll agree your presentation is better.

The ears on the outlet snap off with pliers and are ment to be used as spacers.

Actually if the box is recessed from the finish surface they (should if whoever did the finish didn’t cut the hole too big) hold against the finish surface. If the box is flush with the finished surface then you break them off so the device doesn’t protrude from the finished surface preventing the device cover from fitting properly to the finished surface. They make spacers specifically for spacing devices if you need to do that. Or you can make a little coil spring from scrap solid conductor with your needle nose pliers 🤓
@TexasEngineer12 күн бұрын
@ Actually, the electrician should mount the box with the correct revel so it sticks through the sheet rock. But then, sometimes the studs are warped. The ears are not ment to contact the sheet rock. They are ment to be broken off because they are scored and have a hole for the screw. It is a free spacer washer if needed. Yes, I have used the store bought spacers because the electrician miss mounted the box too deep.
@barcodefly12 күн бұрын
@ no they should contact the sheet rock if the hole is cut correctly and usually is. You only break the ears off if you’re installing it in a cut-in box or “old work” box as they’re called at the home improvement stores. Retired IBEW 40 years here.

OMG, "dry wall, wood, tile, finishing pad, ..." You need to give that list just one time, not every time you refer to the "wall". Thanks, Mr Gamblepudding.... This video could be 1/2 as long.

Good info and methods, but I had to pretty much mute the audio, basically because I got tired of hearing you say "basically" and "pretty much" 😂 and you didn't always use them in the proper context. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you might want to work on that habit. 😉
