Semi retired shoe cobbler here I have done this many times over a 40 year career. Most people dont realize is the reason someone would have this done is because they are so comfortable. If you have shoes/boots that are comfortable you dont mind that it's not like new you just want them to last as long as possible so you don't have to painfuly break in another pair it's not always about appearance or price comfort is very important to some people. Something for viewers to consider before making negative comments. Excellent job sir.

It's amazing that it's been restored like that. The restoration process is cool, and the person who repairs and uses it is so cool. Humanity has to live like that in the future. This is because unconditional production more than necessary will only shorten the lifespan of the Earth.

I agree. Sadly there are so few people who know how to do anything anymore, nor do they seem to care. They just keep buying and tossing. One reason being things are made so badly these days, nothing lasts.😞

If the customer agreed, I would suggest making it a captoe, or wingtip, and replacing the whole front toe with a new piece of leather stitched on. Although you did a great job after a few weeks the hole repairs would be noticeable, as opposed to a wingtip. Also for which type of repair to you use Disaronno?🙂

As others have stated already this is a good temporary fix. The leather across the entirety of the top is degraded from lack of cleaning and waxing. My opinion is to make a width wide strip the top of the shoe covering all the holes. A crease will always look for a weak point and in time will create holes like this. This is a good repair just not a permanent one
@BollYogi Жыл бұрын
Adding as well a patch inner side seppe a necessity for permanent fix,isn't😉?
@wesleydeer8899 ай бұрын
The three patches he did are a permanent fix, they will not tear or debond, nor will a hole form near those patches, due to the patches strengthening the crease. Trying to add a wide strip in the crease zone would make for ultra stiff, unwearable shoe.

Great job. A question or 2 comes up. . Why not also use a larger, thinner patch from the inside? . why not use a fibre bonding agent on cuts after they are bonded flash in place (before) finishing with outside patch? Regardless, these type of repairs are bound to give way, aspatched areas remain weak, against constant outward pressure.

So question would it also work if you put the leather patches on the interior of the boot with contact cement then once it was dried filled in the holes with the leather putty till it was even with rest of the vamp then polished up ?
@davida7843 Жыл бұрын
the problem with this is the repairs are over areas that bend. You'd need to know for sure the putty can handle being flexed and bent without peeling or tearing apart. With a leather transplant like this the amount of visible non-leather material that's taking on bend stress is minimal

While not perfect. It’s certainly not a bad fix and not something easily noticed if not knowing it was there. Well done What did you use over the cracks that didn’t have holes?
@bwest83726 ай бұрын
I patch holes from the inside. I have over 20 pairs of cowboy boots so maintenance is expensive and youll want to learn a thing or 2 so what i do is use alecpea super strong instant bonding glue. I put the patch in from the bottom if it needs 1. Usually my exotic skins have an in between layer so i dont need to patch if the tear doesn't go all the way through. add the glue through the top and try to hold the tear back in place as much as possible. Usually it holds great and i never have any more problems. It may look like a burn mark or a scar after it dries but the glue doesn't dry in some gross white color it just makes the leather stay looking wet down the line. Its pretty much completely unnoticed unless your really really looking for it.

What is a good reliable boot adhesive for Caterpillar work boots? Bought a pair from Goodwill, barely used if at all, most likely from an estate. Used one day going up a mountain. Soles separated from uppers but not all the way. No evidence of any glue residue. Caterpillar didn't offer to fix the problem nor suggest a boot repair shop after I sent them the info and pictures. Tops discolored slightly possible from sunlight through the windows. Still new stiff. Tried Tear Mender, unsatisfactory results. Shoe Goop was a disappointment with other repairs. Super Glue will eat some tennis shoe materials.

I suggest simply through it away because the other parts of this boot are also very fatigue. For one boot, the most wearing part is the heel, you may need to redo the heel for 3 times then you will wear out the sole and leather front piece at same time.
