I bought a PS4 that was extremely dusty, and it was a smoker's PS4, so the whole thing was gunked up. I started with spraying the dust out of everything. Then I tried the disc drive and it wasn't even taking, so I did the Qtip to the rollers thing and it worked like a charm like it usually does. But the disc wasn't reading afterwards. I tried your software methods, but I ended up having to take the disc drive apart and clean the laser. And luckily for me it did work right after. Very happy I don't have to replace the drive. When I was putting it back together I had to find a different person's video because your angle is very hard to see sometimes, and you went through the disassembly and reassembly too fast. I couldn't figure out where that small ribbon cable on the right went.

I'm not even joking if it's not recognising disks but it's making the noise like it's trying, quickly slap the top of it until it does. Should aim for about 10 slaps within 3 seconds. spank it sort of light but with a little bit of force don't smack the shit out of it. Works 100% of the time for me

What's the issue that causes these lasers not to work tho? Just out of curiosity. My pro has had this issue since about a month after I bought it. It will actually read dvds, but not Blu rays or games. Having bought it off of ebay, although new, I had no receipt to take it back anywhere. Periodically I'd check KZbin, Playstation forums, and Google searches to no avail. The videos never actually solved the problem. And Sony, as far as I know, has never addressed it, or responded to the numerous complaints about this issue. Glad to finally see it resolved. Tho I'll probably just upgrade to Ps5 soon instead of bothering to pay to have it fixed, it's good to have closer. For several years now I've just been hard tapping the console right above where the disc goes in as it's loading to get it to read the disc. And that trick has always worked. Matter of fact, I'm about to do it right now and play some fallout 76, lol.

Mine did the exact same thing. I just tap on the ps4 above the BR drive as I insert a disc until I hear it start spinning and it fixed my problem. Bit of a ball ache to tap every time when you insert but its better than dropping 50 bucks on a new drive and believe it or not but it seems to be consistent problem.

So they’re actually isn’t a way to clean up the old laser? I mean I get it, especially with me making this comment September 2023, some of these blue drives are getting to be pretty old. But I feel like they’re not so old that you couldn’t have tried isopropyl alcohol and dusting first? maybe in some cases the laser has been used for so long that it’s bad. How can you tell the difference?

Just thought I’d add my own symptoms and thoughts in case it helps anyone. So I’ve had a few issues recently with mine. I took it apart and put back together to clean, add new thermal paste and replace the CMOS CR2032 battery. Initially it seemed to work fine but the drive was doing the thing where is takes the disc, makes noise intermittently then spits it out while then deciding to block the entry point. Taking out the power for several mins would restart this process with the door open from startup, but the same would continually happen. I took the drive out and also turned that plastic screw a bit which moves the rollers (not sure if it was doing anything beneficial) and put it back. Problem was solved, until about 2 weeks after when I’d been moving the console. Now things were different. This time it took the disc and sounded like it was spinning as normal, however the laser wasn’t picking up on anything at all. No error message either. I did try to do a system update from safe mode and ended up getting a continual error. This was the drive error which happens when there’s an issue with the drive itself and it won’t let you update system files, even in safe mode. I took it apart and had it on its side while testing it after pressing the ribbon cable a bit that’s at the top. I was also worried about this because one guy’s video said to pull the metal tab to remove the cable when in fact you’re supposed to press it down and remove. I felt like I might have disrupted that tab when I was first trying to take it out. I think it’s the ribbon cable causing the issue in the connector and explains the error message on not updating. I thought it could have been the drive itself but surely a loose connection on the cable would cause the update to fail if it relies on communicating with the main board. So far I’ve got it working but there’s definitely something temperamental going on. There’s that rubber foot issue that I ruled out as I was getting the first issue with the door locking even with the lid off and testing the sensor with something metal on the eject plate. That was more when I had the issue of the system ejecting the disc originally.

I have a similar issue. It's a 2 disc game, RDR2, I had put it on my PS4 a year or so ago, but started having freezing issues. For a while I could restart and still play. Then the console started kicking out the disc, saying files were corrupted and I should delete. So I deleted. Re-installed data disc just fine, prompted to put in game disc to finish. It loads about 20% and pauses, won't go any further. I have gone to safe mode, updated/rebuild data base, unplugged overnight, cleaned both sides of disc, no visible scratches or smudges or defects on disc, nothing seems to help. Other games like Madden19, Uncharted work just fine. Any suggestions?

What if it only reads some disc's others it will not. Even with a brand new disc drive it does the exact same issue. I can put watchdogs and rocket league in works first time but if I try fallout or black ops it says unrecognised disc. Disc's are immaculate with no issue what so ever work in other console perfectly fine

@@blakeshoup9946 yes, surprisingly a strange act I came across when a newly purchased PS4 was not working. You literally have to stand on the PS4, weird, but this is the second one (though used condition) I did it and boom! No longer did I receive the message. Even though the disc has some scratches, it never came on again. Just stand lightly, not add a good amount of weight while stepping on it, just try to be careful around the area where the HDD is, not that again it ever affected it.

Click on game and it's says to insert disk.. disk is in the system and does not let me eject the disk either. So it's not reading nor ejecting the disk. why could it be

The real trick is, right when you insert the disc just tap in the middle of the disc area LIGHTLY and it should help the ps4 to read the disc. It will be hard at first but never give up. Gradually the ps4 will be eaiser to handle and it will occasionally work on it's own. Another method is to just flip the ps4 on its side but I just use the tapping method. I've done this for 2 years now and it was rough and hard at first but just keep trying and put the disc back out and in again.

When you say flip on its side do you mean stand it vertically or horizontally? As mine has lived vertically for 4 years and has started to struggle reading discs the last few months, just read your comment and thought great Ill try lying it down on its side, but then wondered which way you consider on its side? But I will try lightly touching the middle of the disc area to see if that helps EDIT: I havent tried turning it over yet but did try tapping the top of the disc area and heard it spin up first time, thanks! With it struggling for a while now and me sometimes sat there for 15-20 minutes ejecting and re-inserting until it reads and spins up, hearing that sound as the disc spins up feels like a little lottery win

My blu rays started not to work now my games are starting to do the same.. It'll spin then it'll stop then eject the game all in all it reads unrecognizable disc.. the system is only a year old as well
