I was having trouble with my UMD not spinning but the red laser was working. If you're having the same problem, make sure the the second disc drive ribbon (which is close to the scrren ribbons) is properly connected!

This is great to know! The "top" ribbon goes to the laser and the "bottom" ribbon goes to the motor. I've had this issue before where only the laser works but the unit doesn't spin. sometimes the motor gears go bad too.

Hello. Its 3 am and i finally repaired UMD Drive lul (4th try in a row - full disassemble assemble). Thank you for your video, really helped. I hate that aluminum bars in the UMD section... I havent replaced a disk-drive, just cleaned and used oil for cogwheels in electrical devices. Psps workin without any hell noises now)

Thank you for your comment! I know what you mean on the UMD aluminum bars. They are tricky and take a while to get them to snap on lol. Thats why I skipped that part since it's tedious for no reason. I'm glad you got your PSP to work with just cleaning it. Sometimes a nice deep clean does the job. Cheers

Hey man, I hope you can respond, U have the same psp, and the umd reader of mine seems to work but when I put a disc the psp immediatelyjust says that can't read the umd(the umd spin, the laser moves) but the lever doesn't seems to work (the laser doesn't turn on), my laser is dead or is there other solution (I'm talking about the lever next to the umd spinner btw)

So my issue is the lil button inside the drive is completely gone n idk if a disc drive replacement will fix it

Sorry to hear, If I understand correctly I think your right. The motherboard (not the disc drive) has a small button trigger that is pressed when the UMD Disc is inserted. If the trigger is missing it will not activate the disc drive. So yes the drive replacement will not spin and work. I also believe that the psp 3000 has 2 triggers, The other one is a small black button that is pressed down by the door. Both of those triggers need to be pressed in order for the drive to work. I’m not sure why sony did this for the psp3001. The original PSP had only one trigger.

hi, yeah, If it's the sensor pressed down by the door and UMD disc it might be a difficult one to replace (there are 2 of them on the psp3001). Those are usually soldered to the main board. I had an issue once with the one that is triggered by the UMD. I couldn't replace it but I was able to put it all back carefully. I'm not sure if this helps.

I go to press the trigger in the disc tray and nothing happens. No red laser nothing happens. What does that mean ? Should I replace the drive ?

For the psp3001 there are 2 triggers to activate the laser and disc. they need to be pressed at the same time and it should work. One is activated by the UMD disc and the other by the psp door. its right by the corner at the top, you should see a small thin button. I hope this helps

hey! does anyone knows if a PSP can boot up even if the flex of the UMD drive is broken? like the orange film that is connected its not there anymore, I just want to play games from my Memory Stick card so not a big deal for me

Hi! Yes, if your UMD drive doesn’t work you will still be able to boot up games on your memory card. This only works if you have the game downloaded on your Memory card. Back then you were able to download games from the playstation store and play them with no UMD disc. Also, if you have the power cord you can connect it and play it without the battery.
