Barely made it up my hill this snowy morning due to reduced power on my 2010 GMC Terrain. Didn’t trust getting back down the hill and across town to have it checked out. Found this video and it seemed straight forward enough so I went to work. The instructions were thorough and easy to follow with helpful hints along the way. An hour later my 13 year old car was running like a champ! Thank you for keeping money in my pocket just in time for a family trip to the Oregon Coast.

You can move the throttle body actuator to clean it. When done cleaning simply turn ur key to the on position without starting up the vehicle. leave it in this state for 5-10 mins for the actuator to realign. After the time has passed then u can turn on your vehicle and it should go back to its normal position i learned this from fixing a 2003 vw beetle

Cleaned ours with spray didn't work, so we got a part from a junkyard and by the grace of God it has work so far it's just 24 hours with the part on and so far so good......2010 Chevy equinox... Turned out to be something cracked in my engine that caused it to leak my oil fast af. Never figured out that track issue because the damned thing broke down on me before I could lol

What I did was removing the throttle body and clean it really good with brake cleaner both sides and it did it my car is 2010 v6 terrain all I needed was flat head screw driver and 10m socket with mid size extension and a ratchet and the part was out for cleaning

Pull the mass air flow sensor wiring harness connector off for 10 seconds if you get stuck on side of road, after turning off engine, check pins in connector, and reconnect. Mine does this alot.

I just drove with the mass air flow sensor unplugged for about 4 months. With it plugged in, i couldn't get above 40 miles an hour. Now it won't go above 10 miles an hour.

Yeah, I just did too. I’m at 160,000 miles. I’m in Oklahoma. It seems like the cold is exacerbating the symptoms of this problem. I haven’t done mine yet. Have you had luck with yours? I also put seafoam in the oil and gas tank .

Paul Perez Paul Perez hey Paul, I did fix mine. I changed the throttle body but it didn’t work. I don’t know about your terrain, but my terrain eats oil so occasionally I have to add oil to it between oil changes. Come to find out, I added too much oil to the crankcase. That oil ended up in my air intake assembly through that small tube on the left side of that air intake assembly that connects to the crankcase. That tube is some kind of exhaust vapor recycling system. If oil gets up in it, it causes that rough idle. Pull that little tube out and see if you have oily junk in it. That might be it.

Paul Perez I changed it but that’s only because I broke it taking it in and out so much. If what I described is your problem, you need to check your oil level, and make sure your oil isn’t overfilled. If so, drain to proper level. Pull out the hose to see if you see a muddy brown oily gas smelling junk. If that hose is clean, it may be your throttle body. Here is that hose part just in case. 2011 equinox has the same issues. 132k miles. I had to replace the timing chain due to a broke guide and it's been an issue since. Ive replaced both intake/exhaust cam sensors, crankshaft sensor, throttle body and still have the reduced power mode and stabilitrak issue. It has 13 codes showing,most are doubles for crank shaft sensor,cam sensors and TPS. So even with resetting the system it is still showing the same codes. Now it shows the ecu and 1 tire pressure monitor isn't working. This vehicle has been a pain to deal with

Jon Hoffman change plugs gap tourque to spec!! Air filter!! Pour a very good cleaner in fuel tank also clean Tb with sea foam spray cleaner do not touch flap manually only spray as someone is idling engine! If your battery has not been replaced do so at 100,000. If it persist change Tb sensor only not the entire unit

Great video, thank you! Been having an issue with idling. 2018 Equinox, 40k miles. After cold start, while idling, needle moves around, sometimes as low as 4k rpm. Then for first few minutes of driving it feels like less power. Problem seems to go away after driving a while but I've been thinking about cleaning the throttle body. I may try this.

Sooooo Took the 4 bolts and quick connect off. Cleaned. Put back on,spiked at 3000 rpms. Did all the tricks this and that. Mechanic said to swap it out with a new one, did that same 3k spike. Tried all the tricks and that. Come to find out a GMC dealer has to hook it up to their computer. 15 min 140 bucks for their labor. Fixed. What a pain in the butt Altogether cost like almost 400 bucks. Ewwww

I haven’t tried cleaning the throttle body yet, but was curious what the dealership would charge. Chevrolet dealership in Los Angeles quoted: $128.00 for diagnosis (but if proceed with the repair they advise this diagnosis fee is deducted from total repair costs) $150.00 to clean throttle body $500.00 (only part cost) for a new throttle body

I have a 201 Equinox and I followed the instructions. Once I put the suv back together and drove it the it eventually went back to power reduced service stabiltrack. I did not remove the throttle body completely, just sprayed the housing and the butterfly piece.

So I took mine off to clean it yet my car is still in reduced power mode. I can’t get it to come back normal. I even tried with a new throttle body but the car won’t sync to it or what not. To take the electrical plug out on the side use your screwdriver to push the plastic lock back once the lock is pushed back it will come unplugged and you can remove the whole throttle body

DIY with Chris Home Projects - I just tried to do this, but when I removed the small side hose, a brown milky substance came out and it smelled like gas. I was scared that it would not stop coming out and leak around the parts of the car, so I re-hooked it back up. Why did that happen and can you shed light on what I can do?

The hose on the side is part of a system that recycles waste back into circulation to reduce overall emissions as I understand it. It is poorly designed and has come under scrutiny from many people as it causes unnecessary gunk to build up on the throttle bottle. It likely smells like gas because it is excess waste from system.

@@DIYwithChris The hose is actually a clean air intake, the PCV is integrated into the EGR system behind the engine. If you are getting milky liquid in your cover like Marsha it means there is likely a clog in the EGR area and the engine has nowhere else to send blowby. Need to get the dealer to inspect that. Some people have this problem in cold climates, their EGR clogs, the engine spits crap back through this clean air intake, the sludge freezes in cold weather, then the engine blowby has nowhere to go and blows the rear main seal. One precaution you can take is to replace the stock oil filler cap with GM FC219. It wasn't designed for this vehicle but works fine. FC219 is a pressure relief cap that releases pressure if it gets too high. So if you are one of these people in freezing climates with a clogged EGR and the sludge at the end of your cold air intake is frozen, it will seep out the oil cap and save your rear main seal. Although like I said if you see the milky sludge you need to get down to the dealer and see about the clogged EGR, instead of getting to the point where you need to release pressure out of your oil cap....

My cobalt had an issue 6 mths ago where the Engine Power Reduced signal came up as well as the TC signal. I did a diagnostic at the dealership but they couldn't tell me anything specific. I took it to my mechanic and they did the throttle body cleaning. It went away but has since occurred again. Do you think it could be that same issue or something different at this point?

@@DIYwithChris Do you have any ideas on what it might be? I went ahead and cleaned the throttle body because that's what worked the last time. While in there I realized one of the short black tubes had been electrically taped instead of replaced, so I did that. Then I realized the plug holding down the plastic guard over everything was missing so figured that may be allowing too much air in and choking it? So I put in a new plug. But I also noticed the seal around the intake hose was not folding around the entire outer lip. I still think it may be more of an electrical issue because sometimes my window on the ride side cannot be moved with my door switch from the driver's side and the volume freezes where you can't change it by the dial. Does any of this foster a culprit or idea on your end as to why my car is going into Engine Power Reduced mode?

@@annagorges9586 reduced engine power mode can be initiated for a multitude of different things. It is a safety feature that when the vehicle detects something wrong that could cause possibly irreparable damage to the vehicle, it reduces power to save your engine while leaving just enough capabilities to drive to a shop. Every time that the message has populated on my vehicles it has been the throttle body however that is not the only trigger. Yours does sound electrical based off the description however I am not a mechanic and cannot offer valid advice further than my experiences. I would first run a diagnostic scanner to see if any codes pull up and move from there. If nothing pulled up, I would likely consult a professional.

If the Reduce Engine Power light comes on.... It's a fail safe so don't damge the engine.... What we did to fix it was to simply undo the negative battery cable let it sit for about 5 or 10 minutes... After that reconnect the negative cable... Then the car or truck should start right up......

My terrain is reducing 1 shift and the rotation goes up and the shift never change, I have to stop the car change it to (N ) and back to drive than it works normally, It's like you driving manually and never change the shift, but it happen on automatic . I have a 2011 Chevy equinox lt 2.4l I replaced my solenoids due to low power and check engine light on both intake and exhaust , I changed my camshaft sensor but still dies while on the road, my first issue was while at a red light it would jerk forward while foot on the brake and I’d notice a louder engine any suggestions??????The code ran through my OBDI is p0011 A camshaft position timing over- Advanced or system performance Bank 1

Magdiel Alvarez yes mine was low oil no oil at all! I was comfortable taking my truck to oil changes and paying for them to be done , this past week my truck would jerk forward and in every red light turn off I until it turned off on me in the freeway 80mph made it home changed out my filter it was disgustingly black, all those times I went for an oil change they never would drain out my old oil just continue to add but this last time no oil was added I was scammed so check your solenoids they roughly run on oil , clean your throttle body as well remember that is the heart of the truck if it’s black and dirty clean it Out but if it’s in terrible condition change it out for a new one! I recommend use the dexos oil as manufacturing recommends , you might also want to check your timing chain if it’s loose out of place etc so far my code went away and truck runs great no issues hope this helps

It is best to remove the entire throttle body and clean from both sides. I have personally done this twice on different vehicles and I have moved the butterfly valve with no issues.

Motor purred like a kitten. I fill up with gas yesterday, drive 1/2 mile up the road and the car slowed down, lost acceleration, and then died. Engine check light came on and traction control warning came one. I was able to pull it off the road. And then when I tried restarting it, the motor sounded really loud, almost like a knock. The oil was just recently changed so that's fine. Also the motor was hot it burned my hand. It's my only car and would like to fix it.

I use my code reader to diagnose most of the problems and go from there. I was able to pick it up for about $100 at AutoZone. It definitely helps so that a dealership or individual doesn't give you crap.

From the research I did at the time, it was a large list of culprits. I was lucky it was the easiest mentioned. Other factors included ECM module malfunction, recalibration of throttle body, component failure unrelated to throttle body that triggers low power (this list is large and a high possibility).

I had the similar issue where my 2011 impala said engine power reduced but this was when the Catalytic converter was starting to go out. But I can hear the throttle body making that rattle noise around 1700rpm to 2300rpm. So it could be that. Once it had all these messages all at once saying Engine Hot A/C off and this is when I just started it in the morning to go to a meeting for work, and then said engine power reduced. Idk what is up with that. But it was annoying so I changed my cat and got a new one because it wouldn’t pass smog, and now my thermostat is starting to go out because the engine keeps on wanting to overheat. And one time I drove from LA back to Vegas where I live and it got up the the line right after the middle line. And I can smell antifreeze now. But I couldn’t before, so I’m thinking the thermostat is clogged or something because I see no leaks from the thermostat or hoses. The hoses seem soft and squishy now but I just can’t find the issue and the reservoir hasn’t moved it’s spot so idk.

Noah Ortega time to replace water pump and thermostat!! As far as reduce power!! Change plugs and air filter!! Spray sea foam spray cleaner onto Tb while someone is idling engine!! Do not move flap manually!!! Also if car had more then 100,000 miles change battery!! Yes battery as today’s card don’t have distributors anymore so they need very good source of power (battery) to operate computer transmission and coils!! If reduce engine comes back, change the Tb sensor only not entire unit!!

Some control modules must be recalibrated if the throttle body and components were manipulated manually. This could one of many possible issues. I've cleaned my throttle bodies on multiple vehicles without any issues or need for recalibration.

My Chevy Camaro told me the same thing and reduced the engine power but it said I need a new fuel injector is that true of do I just need to clean the engine?

When I took in both of my vehicles for the same message, I was given multiple different reasons for the code and how to fix it to include replacing the ECM, throttle body, etc.. I took the opportunity to perform the easiest maintenance I could at home instead of paying them $500+ and it worked. Cleaning the throttle body solved the same issue across both of my vehicles fortunately. I cannot guarantee that it will fix yours but I believe it's worth a try.

My son is driving a 2021 equinox for work. There's only 12000 km on the vehicle. We live in Canada it's minus 35 Celsius right now. The limp mode reduce power just came on. I'm assuming that his situation is because of the cold probably needs a weather front and needs to be unthawed. Hes a salesman for coke and on the road. If anyone has any simple suggestions I would really appreciate it. I was wondering if un hooking the battery post negative and positive for 10 minutes touch them together un hooked and hopefully it resets.

I have a 2013 equinox that was doing the same thing. We tried cleaning, and it would run for about 30 minutes and then we'd get it again. We installed a brand new throttle body and still having the same issue.

Sorry to hear that. This has fixed this problem every time on my 2010 Terrain and 2011 Sierra. Best option is to buy a diagnostic tool and read the code yourself before taking it to a mechanic. Each time I do it the code reads a malfunction with the throttle body.

Roseanna Bruce Did you reset the ECU probably have to erase the bad codes then unhook the negative terminal for how ever minutes it needs to resets the ECU because it still remembers the old code oh and the new throttle body needs the be retrain to work with both the gas padel and ECU good luck...

The dealers are very hungry sharks. The PCV valve is a defect in this models and it will flood with oil the throttle body. Lucky there's a recall that covers certain vehicles with this particular problems specially 2.4 engines, just bad design by manufacturer. GM Service Bulletin 14882 - Blocked PCV valve causing Rear Main Seal failure.

@@RubyGxoxo both of my vehicles did that same thing. It's called limp mode. It can turn on for various reasons but cleaning the throttle body has fixed the issue all 4 times it's happened.

DIY with Chris Home Projects we followed your video and sure enough, the throttle body was disgusting. Cleaned it and Put everything back together, but the idle is still rough, O2 sensors are reading not enough fuel, and the fuel rail pressure is surging on the OBD reader. Any suggestions? One more thing, our left back light bulb has been having issues. Someone told us it could be causing a short somewhere.

@@RubyGxoxo the throttle body has a control module that can be disrupted when the unit is forcibly moved or taken apart. That may be causing the issue with your mixture. I would first ask a dealership to calibrate the module, if that doesn't work, the whole thing may need to be replaced. As for the light, yes that sounds like a possibile short.

I suppose on some of these that didn’t work, maybe you have to actually replace the throttlebody. If you were to replace the throttlebody, is there programming involved because it has a chip?

+Anon if the whole throttle body was replaced, a newly purchased one should come with the chip and not require additional programming. Sometimes, messing with the throttle body and maneuvering the intake flap without disconnecting it first can confuse the chip and cause it to need to be reprogrammed.

That makes absolutely ZERO sense! The "chip", the Throttle Position Sensor, keeps the correct accelerator pedal position balanced with the correct throttle plate butterfly valve opening so air-fuel ratios are correct per what the rpm, gearing and speed are.

The 2010/11 GMC terrain I have is having troubles Im always getting that reduced engine power and its always stalling on me its very cold in Winnipeg MB in canada so i had it checked out and they said the pipes is clogged with ice and dust and they basically said I had to get bigger pipes so theres more room to "breathe" for the engine. they said they kinda melted it some ice but it comes back any ideas on how he melted some ice off in my engine?

Then run very good cleaner in fuel tank and spray sea foam spray in Tb while someone is idling do not move flap manually!! If this persist change Tb sensor only not whole unit!!

+Brandy Day , the way I mentioned is only a one thing that may be causing the issues. It is not always the throttle body. You can run a diagnostic check on it for a code or take it to somebody who can further discuss the problem.
