Hey Barnacules. I saw that on 2:22 you talked about where is the Arduino board and... well, you pointed to the Ramps. The Arduino goes below. The Ramps is not the Stepper Motor controlers(also known as Stepper Driver Module), the Ramps is a Module that goes attached to the Arduino, and the Stepper Motor Controlers go attached to the Ramps (The last version, if i remember well, it's the 1.4). Also, looks like it's not an Arduino, but a Taurino Mega 2560, because the board is White. Hope i could help anyway. Hugs!

I really want to get a 3d printer soon (within the next few months), but stuff like this is actually really holding me back. I know 3d printing is still in its infancy for the most part, and I'm not opposed to tinkering, but I feel simple stuff like this should have been thought out by the manufacturer long ago. I get the appeal of printing your own upgrades, but some common upgrades just seem to be such a no brainer that it should been that way from the beginning.

Your Pololu stepper drivers have no heatsinks on them. This could cause the chips to break in near future because the heat doesn't get pulled out fast enough. The fan helps a lot already, but it's best to have 8x8mm heatsinks or similar on each Pololu module.

On your Robo 3D is the hotend all metal or does it have a liner in it? Trying to get PLA to run on an all metal hotend and the aluminum heatsink with the fan blowing on it is similar to what I am going to make. Hope I can work it out. Thanks for the info and Great Videos!

Some of the lower price 3d printers make very good prints. Get one with a heated bed and make sure it has limit switches. Someone made one with no limit switches and if you tell it to home it will try to destroy its self. Much of the software to run a 3d printer tells it to home right before making a print. So the limits are needed.

Hey Jerry. I was thinking about getting a 3d printer but I was thinking on getting a kit to assemble one. I figured it would be cheaper and a great way to understand the machine a little more. Now I'm not a whiz kid when it comes to electronics. I did build my own PC but we all know that is not hard. So I was just wondering what you thought about those DIY kits. Good Idea? Bad Idea?
@Barnacules11 жыл бұрын
It's a good idea if you have weeks to tune and tinker with it. I don't know many people that have fully assembled the printers and got them calibrated and printing perfectly without a lot of tinkering.

@limited66011 жыл бұрын
You should have heatsinks on the driver chips or even better would be switching to DRV8825 drivers but as you said even the heated bed fails I doubt the drivers are the cause. You can get 32x microstepping with the DRV8825 on ramps using the 16x jumper configuration that you are likely using now for the A4988 chips and they can run more power without active cooling before they fail due to heat. To add, the power you pulled from for the fan is the 11amp supply to ramps and is solely dedicated to D8 (heated bed) and your bed will be using nearly all of that during full power.

ROBO 3D very smart way to play it by making all the little upgrades youtubers make in order to refine the printer. with the fixes and reliability, the robo should blow the rest out of the water at that price range. can't wait to see the r2
@cjmuth20009 жыл бұрын
Comes with cooling - yes, "very effective" - no. With the stock cooling it will run for up to an hour, but after that the board still overheats. The 40mm fan has 1/4 the airflow capacity, plus the enclosed bottom (even with the vents) significantly restricts the airflow.

I'm new to arduino and I'm building my first robot. It positions and drills holes in cylinders (alcohol stoves). All I have left is the programming. I'm having trouble using my limit switches to assign values to integers (or other variables). I can only make them act as on/off switches. I want my horizontal and vertical sliders to find their starting positions. Their steppers need to do a loop (onestep and check the switch) until they hit their micro switches. If you figure this out far before me, I will give you stoves. Next time I'm using inductive proximity sensors.

if you didn't have a second 3d printer to print the clips out, you could just wire up the fan.. point it at the adruino partly propped up so air could flow thru the fan, print the clips and then install the fan correctly... if it were me i'd use 4 balls of modeling clay between the table and the fan for the temporary setup... or.. maybe balls of tape and tape the fan in place just long enough to print the proper clips.
