Thanks so much. Fixed it myself after your video info. My solution was not the depth of the recess but the middle metal plate on the door frame was too flat in and didn't fully push the little latch in enough. I eventually pushed the plate out a little and it works all the time.

Thanks Bill, you saved me from buying a new lock. Had similar problem as you demonstrated the latch wouldn't engage because the strike plate was slightly too high for the latch to enter. Works great now!!👍

Thanks Bill My top latch was going inside the strike plate recess causing my door to be jammed shut, having to use lots of pressure to reopen it, your showing that it is supposed to strike above the recess helped me alot and i just lowered the strike plate. Thanks alot Bill

Thanks for the great diagnosis. I could apply to my problem door. My door’s little latch was not pressed in enough to trigger the latch to come out fully. Fixed with a couple of layers of double sided tape. The problem was the door was too far to the frame. I could have moved the strike plate closer. More work.

Same problem here. I've fixed for now with tape, but long term am thinking I need something more permanent, like moving the striker plate closer, surely there has to be an easier option though? Instructions on new packet I bought to try to fix the problem (that of course didn't work) speaks of "striker spacers" they sell, but I can't find them at bunnings or anywhere, the only spacer things they have look like they require lots of work with cutting to size & stuff, so really not saving any work to buy. I would have thought there should be a "spacer" that can be bought that would fit directly on or under the striker plate to move it out. This must be a common problem as doors move over time, so why no easy fix?

Like the comment below first time a YT solution actually worked. Contacted a builder to replace our old screen door, he sent a young lackey Has been rather cool here until 3 days ago, so no need to keep screen door open overnight. However a hot night recently and I could not lock the screen door no matter the combo of latches and key turns. I did a search and your video came up. Looked at the strike plate and the lackey must have chiseled it out with pocket knife, it was exactly as you describe, the hole was not deep enough. Not a handyman at all, I even had to buy a chisel, but in under

thanks for the video , i thought the lock will actually lock it self especially if the door is used to access spa pool. from the video it looks like you manually need to lock is. so no difference using a key actually. maybe im missing something but not quite getting the purpose of these locks.

Wish I'd watched this before buying & trying to install a new lock, only to have the problem remain. There's actually a second related problem that's possible though, that was the issue in my case, that top nib has to be pressed against the metal plate & if the door has moved over time, there can be too much of a gap there & the top nib not pressing in enough, so needs the opposite to the solution here, with packing between the top nib & door frame. Your video at least got me looking at the right part to find the issue though, so thanks :)

What if everything is ok except at 1:20 the little latch is spinning around freely causing me unable to lock the door from the inside :( I don't mind taking it apart and tinkering rather than replace the whole thing what would you advice?

Hi, depending on the brand the latch will be held In Differently. Very easy to open up and put back together and I have a few videos that show how to do this 👍

Hi, usually this would be due to the spring failing. You can replace the lock body and cover whilst still using the old cylinder 👍
