Cheap Fix - Stuck Variable Geometry Turbocharger Vanes BMW 320d E90 Codes 4530 / 483c

After permanent power loss and the car hesitating on acceleration, I decided to help a friend of mine by taking a look at his 2010 Bmw E90 320d engine code n47. After reading the codes, these two were permanent :
4530 Boost pressure control, control deviation
483C Boost preassure actuator.
At first you will think that the turbocharger actuator is faulty and needs replacing but you don't need to jump to conclusions.
Some say that this is a turbocharger failure symptom.....
Well.... here is what I found out.
Before buying a new turbo actuator and have it replaced, keep in mind that The Turbo actuator does a simple but vital job. It acts as a pressure relief valve that controls the boost output of the turbocharger, diverting excess exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel.
It is connected to the nozzle ring assembly vanes by a small arm.
If the vanes in the turbocharger are stuck, then the turbo actuator will not be able to perform its movement, therefore it will throw the two codes mentioned above. You can use the video as a guide and determine the cause
of the power loss.

Thanks! I had this issue and my local mechanics are on vacation but following this guide I got the car back running as normal! The actuator was completely stuck but after extensive wd40 care it was adjustable by hand.

Nice. But you know that this is only temporary. 😅 I mean, the one that I unstuck, is still driving, but in the near future it must come off 😅

Hi, danke für das Video. Ich habe heute meinen Turbolader getauscht, weil die Achse vom VTG-Versteller abgerissen ist. Mit dem neuen Turbolader bekomme ich aber immer wieder den selben Fehlercode: 0x483c Ladedrucksteller, obwohl der ja auch neu ist. Gibt es noch andere Quellen für den Fehlercode? Lg

My e90 had fault code 483c, veins were stuck. Stripped turbo and replaced nozzle ring with new one and code still shows after clearing. Actuator seems to operating normal. Do you no if actuator needs calibrating after changing nozzle ring? Thanks

Is there a way of doing the Mr muscle technique on the M47 engine? my actuator works as it should out of the car but the arm is quite stiff. I have tried wd40 with little if any improvement. I really can't afford to take the turbo out time or money wise.

Thanks your great video , my bmw x3 F25 have same problems vanes Severely sticky, it has cost many money and time to find out this fault , Can I like you to use WD 40 make the vanes loose then let garage mechanic use Mr muslc to clean the hot side turbo? how is this idea because don't want cost huge money to change new turbocharger. Thanks

The problem with sticky vanes are pretty much hit or miss. Either they get loose or you will just have to take the whole turbo out. You cam try to do what I did. But... Don't forget, start gentle. Don't force it to hard. Use some WD 40 and try to move them. Try for a few minutes. If you feel that the vanes are starting to move, continue. If not, I whould suggest replacing the vanes. Don't clean them with anything, they will get stuck again. You don't need to change the whole turbo, only the vanes, they are cheap.

Probably.... But you will notice a high loss of power.

@@SlowFord no sorry I meant the vanes .i clean the deleted the fault but keep coming back.just want to know price to replace them if you have an idea.thanks

Hi. Great tutorial! I have a 2006 320d msport with the m47 engine, I get almost no boost from pull away until 2000 revs and then suddenly full boost. Once upto speed it boosts fine. There is a kind of squeal. Been to local garage. No leaks found? Really is like Nos when turbo does kick in. No lights on the dash either. Going to take inlet mani off tomorrow to clean and check swirls. Any help would be much appreciated 🙏

Took off and tested the actuator today, it works ok but the arm on the turbine was a bit stiff to move so I guess I gotta take the turbo out and clean it.. 😭

@@snatchwars I have the exact same issue. It lags badly until the boost eventually kicks in and then it goes like a rocket. I did some research on how to clean the turbo without removing and came across a product called revive. I'm going to give it a try. Let me know if cleaning it worked for you.

@@jamierobinson9322 I put some Mr Muscle in the hot side of the turbo yesterday, through the egr cooler port moving the actuator arm to try free it up but found the pipe to the Egr valve was pissing exhaust from both v band clamps so now I've blanked it at the turbo so no exhaust going into cooler now 😎 I blanked the egr valve also so now I just need to delete the egr thermostat and the other water feed to take the whole egr cooler out which I'm doing today 👍 Once I'd silenced the hiss from that I noticed a hiss coming from inlet manifold so that's coming off today too just to make sure the swirl flaps aren't leaking because they're known for it. I'll let you know hownI get on.

@@snatchwars Did u ever fix your issue mate , I have m47 engine e90 myself with turbo actuator fault putting car into limp when boosting under wide open throttle . mechanic reckons the vgt turbo vanes are stuck . suggested new turbo , but id rather have it taken out and cleaned . might be same price though , idk .

Hi, my car is under boosting and over boosting, they have diagnosed sticking vanes (BMW 640) they are saying that it needs new turbos! Is this the only way to resolve the issue

They can also replace only the vanes, but it whould be better to replace all of it if you are planing to keep the car longer.

If you have the same problem, a new actuator won't do anything, you need to change the geometry

Hi, same engine my actuator arm is loose and rattling? Should I replace it or is it normal? Turbo is fine otherwise

Hi. The actuator arm should have some sort of play, check if the circlips are still there.

Open the nearest sensor or access hole and spray Mr muscle foam, will eat the carbon

Hey man, i just did this but i stil get no full power engine foult on the dash but i see the actuator and the arm are moving freely now, i havent done a diagnose test yet. What do you think it may be the problem now? :(

You also need to clear the fault codes.
